TWO EDITORS DETERMINED TO fTGHT Particulars of the JHeetlDg The Combatants Face te trace Elam's Second Experience. There seems te be no reason te doubt the physical courage of the Virginia edi ters who fought the dual, nor their desire te get together. It is remarkable fact that the duellists had .never seen each ether until they met en the field. When Beirne escaped from ilanever ,1 unction, eight days age, he fled te West Virginia, while Elam sought te secure a hiding place near Richmond. The question then arose : "Hew -were the parties te be get to gether ?" The difficulties were enhanced by the fact that all avenues of communi cation were under espionage. The autheri ties were en the lookout along the lines of all the railroads, and had drawn a com plete cordon of detectives and deputy sheriffs around the duellists. McCarthy, Royal), Ragland and all parties suspected of connection with tne duel were watched. At length McCarthy resolved te resort te cipher dispatches. Twe messengers were sent te Beirne in West Virginia, one bear ing a pair of navy six revolvers, and the ether the key te the cipher. They went by different routes, and the cipher man was chased by deputy sheriffs, who sus pected him. He escaped by running through a corn field. The railroad authorities, who read and gave away te the authorities every telegram that passed through concerning the duellists, were baffled as they petused the cipher dis patches, which discussed brilliant trans actions in tobacco, rash attempts te bull the wheat market, and the prospects of a brilliant season at the White Sulphur Springs. The dispatch which appointed the place of meeting discussed the maple sugar crop et lireenDner county. Dy means of this cipher the cartel and all necessary preliminaries were arranged. The cartel provided that the meeting should be within two miles of Waynesboro at 41 a. in , en the old stage read. The password was "Number Oue." Mr. Beirne left Greenbrier county en Tuesday night in company with Prank Wiight. The rain was coming down in torrents. Beirne and Wright had te keep away from the railroad and take the most out of the way wagon reads. Te add te their troubles the mountains streams were swollen, and once the wagon aud its oc cupants were swept down the stream. Thev travelled night and day, and mana ged te mak.0. the tiip of nearly 200 miles without being discovered. The men were determined te Cght, for both of them realized that if they did net exchange shots neither could show' himself in Rich mend. Elam, who had been in hiding near Richmond, in the suburbs of Han over, by Henry Clay's birthplace, toot te the by reads. He was in a covered bug gy, and had te oxerciso the same caution as Beirne, beiuc dogged at every step, but he appreciated thoroughly the situation, and was determined en getting te the ap pointed place of meeting. It might be a maUer of death te him, but te fail te get there, he thought was a matter of dis honor. As the nien ueaied the place of meeting the difficulties around them thickeucd.and many tricks and disguises were resorted te Through Heed and field, by night or day, the two duellists went for each ether, at night lying in honie'ists or crcepiug iutobarnserd.uk cabins. On Thursday nigla it was nudci steed that they wero about sixl y miles apart. Early en Friday morning Elam passed through Brown's Gap in the Blue Ridge mountain.", and i cached Lieut. Gov. Lewis' heuse en Friday niiht. Biorue, and his soce'id reached tlie sccne of the meeting about the same tiine and slept all nijjht in their wagon en the battle ground. Waynesboro is a very old town nudcr the western shadow of the Blue Ridge. It was selected because it was almost midway batween Greenbrier county, where Bieme was, and the slashes of Hanover, whero Elam was. Thr weariness of the long journey did net cool their ardor. About two miles north west of Waynesboreugh, in Augusta county, is a nest of native oaks, free Irem undergrowth, and ene of the most fertile parts of the valhy. In the depth of this woodland is a deep depression, the greuud lising abruptly en cither side, forming a kind of arapitlieatre This spot was the place elected for the long deferred hostile meeting. Tne Combatants Face te Face Promptly at C o'clock a. m. the friends of the two combatants, together with the piiucipals, steed face te face. Elam's party had traveled ten or fifteen miles that morning, but appeared in excellent spirits and impatient ler the fight. Little tune was lest in the adjustment of prelim inaries. The cartel had been agreed upon. It called for Celt's army sixes at eight paces. The command was te be : " Gentlemen, are you ready ? Fire one, two, three." Shots were te be exchanged after the word " fire " and bofero the word " three." After the first fire the challenger was te. say whether or net he was satisfied. If net, then at the same command the men were te empty another barrel each and contiune until the six leads were exhausted. Either had the privilege of advancing. At a few minutes after G o'clock the ground was measured off and the two men placed in position Beth seemed per fectly composed. Several friends who were present, but net immediately con nected with the affair, wero asked te retire. They did se. In a moment the word came : " Gentlemen, are you ready? Fire. One, two, three." At the word "ene" the reports from both pistols rung out en the clear morning air. Wheu the smeke cleared away Elam and Beirne were discovered just as they had been placed. Neither had been touched. Tlie challenger upon being questioned de manded another tire. The demand was readily acceded te. Elaui Strucic lu tne Blent Thigh. Again the word was given and at "one" the explosion of the two cartridges came almost simultaneously. Beirne steed perfectly still. Elam went a step or two forward and was caught by his seconds, and centlv raised from the ureund. The ball had entered his right thigh nearly at the hip. The prebe was introduced by the attending surgeon, but it failed te reach the lead. Elam insisted that he had been shot through both legs, but wheu told that the pain in the left leg was from sympathy, he declared that had he known such was the case he would have demand ed another fire. He then asked for paper and pencil, and in a firm hand wrete two telegrams te his wife, sending ene te Richmond and one te his home, net being sure at which peiut his wife wi.nld be found. Iu the meantime Beirne had ex pressed himself as satisfied, and lifting his hat te his fallen opponent left the fiekl in company with his friends. They en tered a carriage and were driven rapidly away. At Crimora, a station nearby, they took the Shenandoah Valley railroad south. Elam was made as comfortable as pos sible by his surgeon and friends. He was calm and collected and gave directions with a vigorous, emphatic voice Ha re marked that the wound was slight. After bandaging, he wab placed in an ambulance and started for the residence of Lieutant Governer Lewis, some twenty miles dis. tant. The wound is thought te be a dangerous ene. Taking into consideration the weapon used and the distance, it is al most certain that the ball most have shat tered the large bone, otherwise it would have passed through the leg. With both men apparently courageous and self-possessed it seems strange that they could have missed 'each' ether at eight paces. Elam, however, had insisted upon this distance as the fairest he would agree te, for the reasenthat he is se near sighted as net te be able frequently te recognize a familiar face across the room. His uncertain aim is therefore easily ac counted for. It is questionable if he could see the point of his pistol as he held it out at arm's length. Beirne, however, is a famous shot, and a man who has never been accused of want of courage. On the held bis face was pale. but there were no signs of nervousness, and as be took aim his arm was steady and every movement showed delib eration. There is a general feeling of relief that the long suspense is ever with no worse consequences. The affair, how ever, may net end here. Bierne's article, out of which the difficulty grew, was net directly personal, but was intended as an insult te the whole Readjuster party. It is by no means certain that ether mem bers of that organization will net seek an opportunity te vindicate the party. Soen after Elam accepted Beirne's first challonge he placed his resignation as sec retary of the commonwealth in the hands of a friend te de with it as he theueht proper. It is probable that it has reached the governor before this and been ac cepted. Under the laws of Virginia duel ing is made a felony and no one who has sent, accepted or borne a challenge can held office under the state. Ne one has evor been convicted under the law, how ever. The duel has attracted widespread in terest throughout the state. Ne event since the war has occupied mere public attention. Dispatches have been received from every section of the commonwealth inquiring about the result of the duel. These have come from the pelitipal and personal friends of both sides. The result will make Elam the nominee of his party for governor in 1885. He is already head and shoulders abeve almost any man in the party. TKYINO TO KILL A SCHOOL TKlllUBK. Attacked by a Sinn Wbem lie Wnlpped in acnoei Twelve Years Age. In Covington Ky., an attempt was made by Edward Wittick te kill Prof. Geerge A. Yates, the principal of a pub lic school and an old teacher. The affair occurred en the corner of Main and Rid dle streets. Wittick is about 2G years old, and has just returned en a visit from Chattanooga, where he has been residing. When he met Prof. Yakes ou the street he rushed at him with a brickbat iu eaeh hand and exclaimed : " D you, you whipped me twelve years age, and I'm going te kill you for it." " T rvneaa vnll e,n tl,af ilr,i . T nauAw b,U.MM JV ...V UA.UUMnWU , & ,.wvu& whipped fellow." you that 1 remember, my geed " Ain't you Mr Yates, the school teacher? "Yes, sir, lam." " Well, you whipped me twelve years age, and I've had it iu for you ever since." Wittick then threw the piece? of bricks at Prof. Yates, who dodged them, and then walked acess the street te avoid trouble. He was followed by Wittick, who clinched with the professor and threw him .down, but did net then strike him. The professor succeeded in getting up, and again attempted te escape, but Wittick seized a brick and pursued. A friend of both parties interposed and provented a collision, but only for a short tirue. Wit tick sprang like a tiger at the professor and knocked him down with a blew from a brick he held in his hand. Here several persons interposed and put an end te the fight Prof. Yates was severe ly hurt about the head. Wittick went home, and late iu the evening a policeman went te arrest him, and found him there with a butcher's knife in ene hand, a crust of bread in tha ether, walking up and down the room. At the command of the policeman he dropped the knife, but said that if he had had a knife at the tima of the assault, he would have cut Yates' eyes out, and he would get him yet. Ne arrest has been made ler the present en the ground that Wittick'a friends attribute the aet te in sanity, symptoms of which, they say, he has shown since his return from Chatta Chatta Chatta uoega. They premised that they would watch him and confine him if necessary. Kucklen'n Arnica Halve. The gi cat est mee leal uendcr of the world. Warranted te speedily cure burns.
