V . y Lancaster Jntelltgenccr. SATUEDAY EVENING, JUNE 16, 1883, A Mether' Drunkeu frenzy. Mrs. Jehn Ferd, a resident of Mount Carmel, created quite a sensation there en Friday afternoon by attempting te burn U death her one-year-old boy. She is well known as a hard drinker aud ee casienally indulges in a general spree. She had been absent from her home for the past twenty-four hours and returned about four o'clock Friday evening in an intoxi cated condition. She found her three small children taking care of the place as best th-y could. Securing an axe she chased the two ether children out and ferewith began te break the furniture and dishes. She then set fire te the building, which, only for the timely interference of some of the neighbors, would have been destroyed, with the youngest child. When she discovered she was in charge of an officer, who shortly arrived, she furiously resisted, but was finally quioted aud ledged in the lockup. A Great marriage sciietne Spoiled. The grand jury of Erie county recom mended that married paupers in the alms house be permitted te occupy joint quar ters instead of being separated. The peer directors were altering the building te meet the recommendation, but the work was stepped, owing te the discovery of a scheme among about oue hundred un married inmates te marry and secure the extra comforts, the preject being te marry each ether according te Pennsylva nia law, which recognizes simple declara tion before witnesses a legal marriage.
