A JEWISH rCSTlVAI.- OoauMmeratlOB of "She sooth " Penteeeit STSB.SAX'1. H. LASH. The feast of Shebneth has peculiar and beautiful teachings for the Jew. It commemorates the grand fact of the giving of the law by the hands of Hoses, and is also remembered as the second feast of Weeks from the circumstance of .the Israelites being commanded te determine the day of its observance, by reckoning seven weeks from the day when they began te put the cickel te the corn in Palestine. That day of beginning te put the sickel te the corn is called " the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering." Yet another name is given te the observ ance as we have already remarked "the feast of the first fruits of wheat harvest." They were then te offer a new meat offering unto the Lord. It was brought, net from the fields, but from the babita tieus ; it was two-fold and of an appointed measure ; it was net in the condition in which the fertility of the earth produced it, but advanced by human industry and art ; it was net taken as it came, but out of the finest flour ; and it was baked with leaven. The law concerning it was this : "Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave leaves of two-tenths deals ; they shall be of fine flour, they shall be baked with leaven ; they are the first fruits unto the Lord." By this feast our forefathers did annual ly worship Ged with the best produce of the earth, after it had been brought in and threshed out, and separated from the chaff, aud purified aud made most per fectly fit for the feed of man. The histori cal fact which they commemorated there in, was the giving of the law from Mount Sinai, which took place when fifty days were accomplished from their departure out of Egypt ; the act by which Ged scpa iated them unto Himself, aud constituted them into a polity, making them net only a peculiar treasure unto Himself ahove all people, "but a kingdom of priests ami a holy nation." We have spoken at some length of do de tail in regard te the history and i eculiaii ties of this festival, because it has less jus which we should uover forget aud at this season should specially lay te heait. Times have chauged somewhat since the law was given by Moses, hut human nature remains the same, aud Ged's or dinances are evermore realities. It is a high privilege te belong te the nation through which Ged was pleased te make known His unchangeable law of morality. It is a high priviloge, tee, that we are allowed te prosent te Him at this time the first fruits of our households the children whom we are commanded te train up in the path of His commandments aud for the perpetuation et the faith of one Ged. It is a high privilege, tee, te present at this tirae before the Lord in our prayers, the first fruits of the great harvest of souls the long line of Israel's dead, whom at this season we couimcmerato in our piayers. Thcse are lessens which are well wei th the remembering, and they mark this eriat feast as ene of practical, as well as histeiical importance. Many a cetitury has passed since the festival of '' Shebneth " was first kept, aud yet its celebration has never once been intermitted. As inhabitants of Palestine, as dwellers in heathen lands, as persecuted tefugees from Christian coun tries, as citizens of kingdoms and repub lies of liberal civilization, the Jews have always been mindful of the old cevenaut with Ged, and have kept His feasts and facts with vigilan faith. Te day, net less than in the time of Moses, their hearts are open te the gtave import of these Pento Pente costal lessens. 'lbe Lecal Tobacco Trade. A well informed special correspondent sends us the following : A very small quantity of the '82 crop still remains in the hands of the growers, even the hail cut and truck have beeu gathered in, and growers stait with a cleaner field than they have for years, aud outside the '82 there is net as much te baece laying in the hands of the packets as is generally supposed. Gradually the '0 has gene until there is very little held iu this county aud the 'SI, it is well kuean, was net by any means n large crop, and a considerable portion of it has been taken The burning qualities of it are said te be geed and iu all probability it will go off in the near future. Plantiug et the '83 crop gees en bravely. The weather has been favorable, but theie is a lack of plants aud the cut worm is getting his work in. Iu some sections the average will be about as large as usual, but en the whole it will fall off largely. In the lower end of the county it will be very much less than heretofore aud in Chester hardly half the usual amount will he planted. Up the river iu Clinten, Lycem iug and all that section will fall off 40 pji cent Farmers say it does net pay ami they aie tinning their attention te potatoes, which they claim will pay at 50 cents a bushel. Carrie Scott, the woman who is charged with robbing Jehn Meruiugstar of $45, is still in the lockup.
