Tim Bur.cu. Anna Maria Krlder, wire of Tobias K. Chambersburg, .1 uly 25, 1875. This is te let the neODle knew that I, Anna Seed Leaf, Sumatra and Havana ler the Week Ending Saturday, Jane 9, 10 A. fit. U. S. Tobacco Journal. The week was a lively one in many re spects. The number of sales was quite large when compared with the diminutive ness of these of many previous weeks. Many buyers were perambulating through the market, and these who sold nothing or bought nothing passed the time in dis cussing the merits or demerits of the new Sumatra. Leaving aside opinions regard ing this tobacco, the plain fact remains that beyond all probability our market will offer between 8,000 and 10.000 bales of Sumatra after July 1 next. This means competition that cannot be regulated ma terially by the quality of the stock. If it is peer, it will sell at low figures, if it is geed, it will sell at high ones. Sell it will. Te balance this formidable competition, holders'et indifferent seed leaf must ex pect hard times in disposing of their stock at paying figures. But even at the best, profits will be very small se small, in fact, that the packing of leaf tobacco for the jobbing and large manufacturing trade will turn out, at least this season, a most unrenumerative enterprise. The outlook for a lively oxpert business is net very encouraging se far. The spon taneous exertions of exporters, who will new rush into the market and secure sutta bin lets at acceptable figures, and then suddenly become deaf te offers at even ridiculously low figures, cannot be taken as safe prognostications for the expert business. If a lively expert business does net set in seen, all tobaccos but the finest will remain unsaleable at even nominal prices The sales made for home trade last week comprise all crops, aud realized very moderate figures. There wero reports of sales of about C00- cases of '82 Penn sylvania and about 800 cases of '82 Wis consin Havana seed for expert ; but upon investigation it appears that these sales were in reality effected about three weeks age, and duly noted in thesa columns. Certain arrangements regarding the trans actions were brought te a cle this week only, hence the reports. The Pennsylva nia sold this week for home trade is spoken of has having re.ilizud as much as 19V cents. This tobacco is, beyond doubt, at present the superior of all ethor tobaccos in the market. '82 Wisconsin Havana seed is burying '82 Connecticut seconds and lower grades of Connecticut. New Yerk state Havana seed is showing iinely also ; and though by no mean.s as geed as that of last year, stands a geed chancj of finding buyers. A specification of the sales made during the week shows the following : Pennsylvania Crep '82, 500 cases ; hijrhest figure, 19 cents. Crep '81 300 cases, at 8 te 15 cants. (The reported sales fjr expert are in eluded in the above.) Wiscensiu Crep '82, COO cases Havana sued, at 8 te 11 V cents. (The reported sales for expert are in cluded in the above.) Connecticut Crep '82, 230 cases, at 11 te 20 cents. Crep '81 300 cases, mostly wrappers,at 10 te 33 cents. New Yerk state Crep '82' 300 cises, p. t. Ohie Crep '82, 250 cases ; broker who reported it c ills it "Lrittle Duteli," ana says it is weith 14 te 15J cents. Sumatra Ycrv active All old. sound lit atccr; ures. Havana Market active. Importers are accepting the situation and unloading at reasonable figures. Quotations, 80 cents te $1.15. The f buadelphU Market. J.caf. Seed Lear The trade doing in cigar leaf is very satisfactory ; in fact, se far this year, sales are far ahead of last. Fer the mouth of May the leaf trade was excellent aud opeus ptetnisiugly for June. The '81 Pennsylvania daily finds approval by well leaded. Next fall, after they shall have unleaded, they will discover that the crop of 1883isthe largest ever planted, that the planting has been terribly over done, and that the weed is a drag ou the market ; that it is of very inferior quality, bail cut and flea bitten, and that there will be no sale for it except at filler prices. It was ever thus, and ever will be. Fer our own part we can see no signs of a di di munitien in the acreage Frem almost all the sections of the county, from which we have advices, the acreage will be about the same as last year. Seme farmers are, of course, contracting the space devoted te tobacco, but ethers are enlarging it, thus keeping up the equilibrium very nicely. The weather thus far has been generally favorable for the young plants ; the fre quent showers have kept the ground in geed condition, and though the sun for a few davs was very het, we hear of but little complaint of the plants being burnt out. 'The storm of wind and rain en Sun day night and Monday did some damage, but net enough te cry about. The season is sufficiently young yet, te replace all plants washed out or burnt up . The days of the cut worm are almost numbered ; the flea has net been unusally bad, and with continued favorable weather there is every reason te believe that the tobacco farmer will, as usual, produce a full crop, and that if he keeps himself posted as te the condition of the market, he will re ceive a sufficient reward for his labor. As far as the packings have been examined they turn out well, and the belief prevails very gen erally that when the crop shall be fully cured and sweated and ready for the market, it will show up better than any ether crop for many years past. The scattering lets remaining in the hands of growers are beiug picked up by packers wherever they can be found. During the past week thousands of acres of young plants have been set out in this ceuntv iust hew many thousand oannet of course be known. The wise ones declare that the acreage this year will be much less than heretofore :. bat the wise ones have a chronic habit of decreasing the acreage, annually, about planting time, and extravagantly increasing it about buying time.
