The Lancaster County Agricnltural and Horticultural association neld a stated meeting in their room in city hall yester day afternoon. The president being absent, H. M. Engle was called te the chair, aud Jehn C. Lin ville acted as secretary. The following named members were present : Messrs. Calvin Cooper, Bird-iri Hand ; Henry M. Engle, Marietta ; Cas per Hiller, Conestoga ; Levi S. Reist, Oregon ; Eph. S. Hoever, Manheim ; Wm. H. Brosius, Drumere ; Jehn C. Linville, Salisbury ; J. Heffman Hershey, Salnnga ; Wm. C. Pyfer, city; Prank R. Oiffen deriTer. citv : J. M. Johnsten, city : C. H. Gast, city ; Peter S. Hershey, city ; Jehn R. Backwalter, Salisbury ; C. Li Hunsecker, Manheim tewnsnip ; McCachran, Salisbury ; Daniel Bird in-Hand. Crep KeperU. Casuer Hiller reported that the A. B. Myer, wheat between Lancaster and Conestoga loekB very well, though in some fields where ,it was preceded by tobacco, the wheat is tee rank and in some places ledged. The grass leeks well everywhere ; trouble has been had with the young corn, and some farmers are net yet done planting ; there will net be a-full crop of apples, but the pears and cherries premise well, while the peaches are well set ; small fruit premise well ; a small yellow crested bird, known as the cedar, bird is very troublesome about the time cherries ripen ; they come in great flecks and fairly strip tlie trees. Calvin Coepor said that Mr. Hiller's re port would answer for his neighborhood ; the grass never loekod better than new ; the wheat was admirable ; the young corn, owing te cold nights, looked rather sickly; the tobacco farmers who have been pray ing for moist weather have it at last and are busily engaged in setting out the plants ; peaches leek hotter thau last year, and plums aud tiagcs premise admirably, there being as yet but little trouble from the curculie. Levi S. Heist, agreed with these who had preceded htm, except that in some Holds in his neighborhood the wheat was badly injured by the fly aud thore would net be much mere thau half a crop. Most kinds of fruit leek well, but apples will net make a full crop the Astraehau and the Maiden's Blush being exceptions and premising full crops. Jehn C. Linvilla saul that iu his neigh borhood wheat will fall back fully one fourth compared with last year's crop ; apples premiso fairly ; cherries and small fruits abundantly ; grass excellent ; eats and corn backward. Peter S. Reist reported nearly everything except wheat and apples as giving extra ordinary premise, and evon the wheat may make a full avorage, as the fields that have escaped the ravages of the fly are far above the average The grass is extraordinary, aud the coin that is up leeks well ; eats are uneven, but the outlook is geed ; ap ples and peats arn.net se premising, but them is au abundance of poache-t and clienies. The fme rains of Satuiday night and Sunday have-set everybody te planting tobacco. J. Heffman Ilershey reported that eveiything in his neighborhood. looked lovely ; the wheat leeks magnillcent some of it a little tee rank and ledged by Sun day's heavy rain storm ; apples ate net ever abundant, but the peach trees are very full ; there appears, however, te be something the matter with the trees as the leaves are looking siekly and curl upj The tobacco that was planted a week age is growing finely, and today (Mendaj) almost every tobacco patch is crowded with men. women and boys setting out the young plants. All kinds of small frui!s premise an abundant yield. President Engle could add but little te what had been said. In his neighborhood there were very few bad wheat fields ; Rorue of them are growing tee rankly, but the cool weather we have had has been very faverable te the wheat crop, and there will be a full average unless an ex cessively het spoil should new fellow; the grass never looked hotter and the clever is as geed as ever was grown ; corn is backward and infested with cut-worm ; there will be a full crop of early potateos, the fields being almost free from the potato boetle. He had noticed that this pest was disappearing ; he had net seen a dozen of them this season, and very low cabbage moth ; he could net agree with Mr. Cooper, however, as te the enrculis ; he had found them very numerous, aud they were badly cutting the cherries as well as the plums. Paulowela Imperial!, Casper Hiller read the following paper "This magnificent tree is net receiving the attention in this country that it merits. Its large blue, sweet-scented flowers are beautiful. The tree, if severely shortened in when young te keep it from becoming tee straggling, makes ene of our best trees for ornament. The tree is perfectly hardy. As a quickly available tree, it has no equal It far outgrows the Catalpa or the Ailanthus. The last named tm is perhaps the next tree in value, bnt the smell of the bloom is se objeetionablo that it should net be planted near a dwelling. The Paulewnia weed, for durability is net exceeded by anything, unless, perhaps, the locust. The lumber is said te be first class for cabinet work. Te give an idea of its growth, we cite a tree growing in Independence square. Philadelphia, 35 years old, measuring 8 fOet in circumference and about CO fcet high. A tree, 18 years old, that I had occasion te remove about 8 years age, measured 18 inches in diameter. Seme of this weed was left lay around purposely te test its durability ; it is te day as sound as locust would be under similar conditions. This growth exceeds the locust by far. The locust, tee, is subject te borers aud ether insects, while the Paulewuia is se far insect proof. This trce is well adapted for planting en hillsides. It should be planted thickly, say from 4 te C feet apart, te make them grew straight and upright. If the trees, when two or three years planted are cnt off near the ground, there will be no diffi culty in growing straight stenis, as they then make Rhoets of 10 te 15 feet long in en season. After three or four years mere, the thinnine out. will pay for all the labor ex pended en the planting . These poles, from 10 te 20 feet long, are excellent for fencing or for fuel. If seme of our oreok hills, tbftfe are annually hav ing their soil washed away, until they be come barren wastes, and are already eye sores, would be planted with these magni ficent Paulewnias, they would become a thing of beauty te the country ana a joy te their possessors." mwmsfleB. Mr. Cooper said he endorsed all that Mr. Hiller had said as te the rapidity of, the growth of the tree named ; but be thought it was net entirely hardy. He had some I Tnnncr aneeimana. trruwil from the SOea, in his nursery, and the yeang shoeU had hart had I been winter kilted, and mom m JUNE 5, 1883. abandoned its cultivation. He knew noth ing as te its durability. Mr.-Hiller in reply, said he had grown these trees for twenty-fire yean and none of them were ever injured by winter weather. They can readily be propagated from the seed, and as te the durability 'of the weed there can be no question. Mr. Engle said:it seemed almost incredi ble that this rapidly growing weed should be se datable. The generally accepted theory has been that the slew growing weeds are most durable ; but facts are facts, and the well-authenticated durabili ty of the Catalpa and Paulewnia seem te disprove our preconceived notions. He asked Mr. Hiller whether he thought the tree would grew en peer, worn out and worthless lands, Mr. Hiller answered that he believed it wenld grew wherever anything else would grew. llelarred QueuleHB. Mr. Engle said be could net answer the question which had been referred te him at last meeting, namely, " What is the most remunerative crop for the farmer ?" He said that everything depended en circumstances. Sometimes tobacco has proved very remunerative ; se have celery, onions, strawberries and many ether crops. He would net attempt te give an answer te the question. c Jehn C. Linville answered affirmatively the question referred te him as te whether the Self binding reaper had proved a suc cess. He said that with him it had proved a grand success. He had ene in use last year, and he would net - use any ether reaper if it were given him for nothing. A single reaper is suincienc ier wree or four small farms. It will cut ledged grain, bind much hotter and make much better sheaves than can be made by hand or by jthe ordinary reaper. He believes it k destined te ceme into universal use. The instrument used by him is the Uaborne twine binder ; it is said there are better eneB the Buckeye, Peering and McCer mick, bnt he had net used them. A six- feet reaper will cut and ninu iweive acrua of wheat per day. Mr. Engle said it was claimed that the Deering reaper was of the simplist con struction, and the most effective, and that its manufacturers had challenged all ether makers te a competitive trial. Uelcgatcs te state College. Calvin Cooper called attention te the fact that this society is entitled te send delegates te the animal meeting of the "state agricultural cellege, en the 27th of this month, and te have a voice in me election of trustees. This privilege uaci net been oxercised for several years past, bnt he thought it well te exercise it new. He moved that the chair appoint threo delegates, of whom Hen. A. S. Mylin be ene, te attend the meeting. The motion was agreed te and the chair appointed Hen. A. S. Mylin, W. II. Brosius and Calvin Cooper. Calvin Cooper ..presented the following question for consideration at next meet ing, and asked that it be referred for answer te W. H. Brosius : ' Have the sessions of the Lancaster County Agricul tural aud Horticultural society, and the subjects discussed at its meetings been of any benefit te the community ? And if se, why de net these interested in agriculture and horticulture attend te its uieetings and participate in its deliberations ?" The following question was also sub mitted aud referred te Caspar Hiller : "Would il be advisable te cultivate Southern varieties of apples in this sec tion for winter use ?" A resolution was adopted that a pre mium of one dollar be paid by the society for the best collection of apples, ene dol lar for the best collection of peaches, and ene dollar for the best collection of pears te be exhibited at the August meeting of the society ; and that 50 cents premium be paid respectively for the best plate of peaches, pears and apples oxhibited at the same time. The society then adjourned te meet en the first Monday in August, it being deemed uuadvisable te held a meeting in July, iu the midst of harvest. Advertising Client ! ! !
