Meantime the campaign waxed warmer and a half-dozen diftercnt tickets were proposed by correspondents of the Journal, all agreeing en Themas MiftTm for govern or and flehu V. Kittera for Congress ; the preferences for senator being divided be tween Matthias Barten and Alex Scott. Miillin, Kittera and Barten were elected and the following assembleymen : Rich ard Keys, Jere. Brown, Abr. Carpenter, Themas Bendc, Jehn Hepkins, Samuel Boyd. Sign of tne Tlmea. It Is noted that signs of a hard winter are made by the squirrels crossing the Susquehanna in numbers of several hun died per day from Cumberland county te Ilarrisburg, " insomuch that several of the inhabitants of the bauk have been en abled te salt up batrels of them for their winter's use." Gee. Fisher opens his dancing school for ihe season ; Slough's stage line new announces weekly trips te and from Pittsburgh, starting from Lan caster evcry Sunday morning. Mr. Hack ley, being about tp remeve his wax figmes, give:; neticu that he will yet make engage ments te entertain select companies en an afternoon. The Klertien. Friday, Nev. 4, was presidential elec tion day that year, and the members of the state and federal Legislature en cither side had fixed up a ticket of fifteen elec tors for Jeffersen and as many for Adams. Jehn Whitehill, of this city, was en the Jellersen ticket and Rebert Celeman en the Adams ticket, but both were elected ; the contest was very elose in the state, and though the Jeffersen ticket generally pre vailed Celeman ran ahead of ene of the electors en it. Flushed with his success or annoyed at attacks en his candidate which had been inade by correspondents of the Jeur nal there being no editorial department it. iceins that Celeman and one Charles Smith, esq., an attorney at law, began what the Journal calls ' au attack en the libeity of the press ;" by taking advantage of cemt week te circulate a paper binding the signers te step their subscriptions te the Journal. Hamilton, the publisher, submits the outrageous facts te the Amer ican public and triumphantly announces that the bold attempt te " ruin a young man just entering upon the theatre of the world and te trample under feet the sacred liberties of the press," had cost him only 27 subscribers, though ever 200 were applied te, and meantime he gained 35 new patrons. On Dec. 23 six wreks after the election the Journal published the returns, ex cept from Georgia, Kentucky and Tennes see, net yet received. On Dee. 30, it is announced in type of gigantiu size that Kentucky and Tennessee- have been heard fiem, Georgia euly is dun, and it is safe te predict that Mr. Adams will he president and Jeffersen vice pres:dent. Mr. Hamil ton continues te picscrvc his "impartiali ty" as "printer" by publishing communi cations en both .sides of political issues. Feb. 17, 1707, there was au alarm of mad dogs in Lancaster, a child of Docter Moere, and a hey of Majer Light's, "sev eral dogs and se:no c.ittle ' having beeu bitten The 221 of Febi nary was cele brated with local festivities at many places in the town. The burning of Abraham Brubaker's barn, with all his stock, three miles from town, ou March 0, is ene of the few local paragraphs in these days; and likewise the finding of an uuknewn man drowned in the Conestegoo opposite Slough's. Abram Musselman's son was struck and killed by lightning seven miles from the city. Mattb.es Tshudy was making chip hats iu Lititz in 1797. When the two Beck brothers of Maner married the two Brenner sisters it was considered netable that the clder brother manied the younger sister. Ham ilten about this time printed his prospectus for a new literary weekly te be calied The llite ; and the plan for establishing a company te develop the Gap copper mines. Phillip Larus, then practicing dentistry in the city, advertises his im pending departure Frem an advertisement in the Journal of June, 1703, it appears that at that time there was a legalized lottery scheme te raise money, $20,000 te be applied te do de fraying the expenses of paving the streets of Lancaster. 20,000 tickets were te be sold at $8 each, and thcre were C,2G8 prizes and 13,732 blanks, the prizes rang ing from $10,000 down te $10. The lead ing citizenn of the town wcre commis cemmis commis siencts of the scheme. About this time the literary venture, the Hive, was disoen tinned. On May 1. 1798, St. Tammany's duy was celebrated, for the first time in twenty years, by a number of respectable citizens at Swcnk's springs ; they " had 20 toasts and many hearty acclamations of festivity." Our relations with France at that time threatening trouble, the Federalists held public meetings and passed addresses ap probatory of President Adams, and a volunteer company was formed here for tbe defeuse of the country. On Thursday, March 22, 1793, a bill for the removal of the state government te Wrights Ferry (from Wrightsville and Columbia) passed ae H0OS3 by a nngenty or two vote; bat was beaten in the Senate by six or seven. The death of Dr. Jehn Carpenter en Mareh 19 was the occasion for an eloquent and what seems te be a sincere eulogy of his many excellent traits of character. The increase of crime led the Journal as early as that day te warn the governor against the remission of penalties and te advocate free schools in every county. In illustration of the deplorable tendency of vice and crime, it is related that Jes. bter rett, who, in the same issue advertised his wife as having eloped, had induced her te come back te live with him in Conestoga township, and while she slept "en a plank in the same room with her brutal husband " he killed her with an axe and hanged himself right abeve her dead body. Soudersburg, this county, was given its name Nev. 27, 1797. Hamilton & Ce., issued the first number of their German paper, Landman's WecJtenblatt, Feb. 27, 1798. Hener where Hener U Dae.
