7 'V5 .Si I -a LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER SATURDAY: MAY 26, 1883. -s OCK GRADUATION DISPLATB. Seme SusseUloea for Mich Scheel Com Cem inencement. Ker the Isteluoexcte. The commencement season is at hand, and the young folks of the people's col cel col Isge are generally expected te make his or her mark. The tree and its fruit are all compress ed in a nutshell. Our free schools are the fertile soil which generates and nourishes the young plants ; and new they'are coming te be compared and transferred te their several fields for all coming time, where they will yield, some thirty, some sixty and some an hundred fold, and of seme it will be said, " it were better they had never been born." But we are occupied with the present and its details. The result of these years of culture must be made apparent, and we are in danger of looking for geed fruit while yet in the blossom geed fruit it may be, but net mature. Secial instincts prompt us te give the young folks a grand fete and demand from them in return an exhibit of their scholarship. The eye must be gratified and the ear must be filled. Susan's charms may be such that we would rather leek twice under the bonnet than ence en it, but then a geed picture should have a fine frame that is right reason ins, and many a peer artist has been harrasscd te supply the treasure of his labor with one. What a pity such an incongruity should conie between as want of means te gratify one's reasonable desires ! Still the fact re mains for adjustment. We counsel the aid of courage, believing that fortitude is a cardinal virtue ; out tins arm t.i defense is unpopular, it conflicts with one's cherislipd desires ; individuality will net be suppressed se ; te be an object of attention the centre of a picture, as it were is a fitting tribute te oneself. Se we take the hazard and make the effort te shine and outshine, at least for ence. Fer has net the necessity been created by public demand ? And does net a share of the responsibility lie there? Yeung conscience is answered and silenced tee ; the downgrade we pro pre ceived and the stations of sound morality and strict integrity are seen passed and left behind. The costly dressing, boquets, fruits, and jewelry for gifts create obligations inconsistent with small incomes. The premise te pay for value received which is likely te end in nothing but a premiso is net the sort of culmination of an education that we de- she for the youth who is just entering the duties of life. This is but ene form of mischief lesulting from our high pressure graduation displays. Obviously there is need of reform, or abatement, or modifi cation of the matter as it is. Whose business is it te reform, aud relieve and receive the thanks of many heads of families'.' D. Itenellcliiry students. Moravian. The vexed question of beneficiary educa tion is agaiu agitating the minds, mouths and pens of many. While there are many aud their number rather seems te be in creasing, who donutiuce the whole system unqualifiedly, and would in no case have a theological student's education furnish ed him unless he pays for it just the same as medical, legal and ether students must, lliove are ethers who maintain thai the chuich that expects the future services of a young man ought te be willing te bear the expense of preparing him ler such service. It appears te us that both parties are tee sweeping in their declarations. There certainly is no obligation resting en the church te give a man his education simply because it expects his services afterwards. Ne man has a shadow of a right te claim his education en that ground. But, en the ether hand, neither ought the church make a hard and fast rule te refuse any and cveiyone an educa tion, unless he pajs for it in money. Te held out the eiler of a free education as an inducement, a sort of bribe for young men te cuter the ministry, can certainly he only harmful. Hut te deny a young man the hepe of giving himself te tills work because he has net the money te educate him self, would be harmful, tee, in many :i case. The matter is one that will net bpar regulating by auy iron clad iu!e, but must be determined aeceiditig te the cir cumstances in u.i h inlivitiual case, as is done in our chinch. If a young man is able te pay ler his preparation for the ministry, oblige him te de se. Unwilling ness en his pat t proves his uuworthiuess, the abscuce of a " call " in his case, the lack of thorough consecration. And if a yenug man, having all ether qualifications, including a conscientious desire te preach l the Gospel, has net the mouey, then by all -means let the church educate him. The whole question is one for Clnistiau love te deteitniue, and net for unbending rules. flun et the Unfit. Pcriy County Democrat. The Lancaster Intem.igkncek's adver tising patrons made such a demand ou its columns en Monday that the publishers were compelled te issue a double sheet.
