LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER THURSDAY. MAY 24, 1883. JHK KKPUlJLlCAN PKIMAKIKS. Little or Ne Interest In Ibtm Excited. The annual primary elections of the Re publican party of this county will be held next Saturday, though as yet they have excited littloer ue public interest. Candi dates are te bu chosen for the office of dis trict attorney, piisen inspectors) directors of the peer and county surveyor ; also delegates te the state convcntieAaad members of the county committee. JRieft extraordinary popular indifference in the result continues te prevail, and outside of some of the towns which have been es pecially worked up by the candidates a light vote is expected, the aggregate being estimated at about 8,000. Fer delegate te the state convention from the city representative district Dr S. T. Dav.'s has no opposition ; for senatorial delegate in the lower end the contest is between H. R. Fulton and Goe. Ulmei for rcpro rcpre sentative delegate from the southern dis trict two of these three are te be chosen : Eli Esh'eman, II. 31. Hen, B. F. Rewe ; and from the upper district four out of these five : D. W. Graybill, Lemen S. Greff, Gee. B. Rauck, W. S. Smith, J. W. Yocum. The peels, rings and combinations, the big 3Iendays, lavish pay of heelers and bumraeis and the scenes and incidents of the ordinary campaigns have been want ing this year. Fer prison inspectors the Burkhelder New Era faction are running Jehn II. Miller and N. 31. Weeds, and the anti-Uurkhelder Examiner party are for Calvin Carter and Gee. Trout. Jacob F. Andrews, of Strasburg-, and 31. N. Bru baker. of East Ilempfield, are the candi dates for county surveyor ; for peer direc tors Daniel Herr. Jacob G. Keller, Christian Lefever, Jehn K. Miller, A. R. .Strickler. Fer district attemey the distinctly Sen senig politicians are for Eberly, though the New Era and Examiner factions, as such, keep bauds off, and some of the Stalwarts are heartily for Reincr-hl. Weaver has been making some diversion the last, week, but he is generally con sidered third in the race; and unless there :g agcueial concQutraticneftb.fi politicians iu favor of Eberly, for which new there seems te be neither opportunity nor motive, Rciue-hl will get his nose under the wire, a geed head in advance of Eberly. An alleged dialogue printed in the Examiner, " ltw," is claimed te represent the last conference in the famous castle in-ths alley. m A. NDSPICIOCS FELLOW. In Seircliut Beard and Night Keys. Jehn TLoaipBen, a stranger in this city, was arrested last night by Chief Diechler as a supicieut character. This mau jwas making himself very buajT yesterday all day. Tin went te the bearding house of Mr. Christian Kiefler and engaged beard a yeai and a half, representing that he was employed at a tea store en West King .street. Soeu after getting into the heuse he took j IV his shoes and began inspecting the rooms. The occupants of several of them were in when he called and wheu confronted by them , s would walk out, making sen: trivial excuse, fie went from Mr. Kieffer's home te the bearding house of Mrs. Rei gert, en East King street, where he also engaged and ebtained a night key and beard. His actions everywhere were sus picieus, and in the evening while en the street he was pointed out te the chief of police by some geutlemeu who knew of his movements. He was taken into cus tedy, when he at ouce stated that he wanted te go te Philadelphia and seemed anxious te depart. When taken te the statieu heuse he was searched aud seven handkerchiefs were found en him. Five of them are silk of diuercnt colors and two are white. One of the latter lias -the name " WhitehiU" upon it. nr. Reiiicrt also found a bunch of kejf, which he dropped en her stair way. Seme of them looked as though tlicy belong te front doers. After his arrest he pretended te be very anxious te return Mrs. Reigcrt's key, which he was all wed te de. All who have come iu ceutact with the man believe that he is a Mieak thief. Inquiries made at the tea stores here renurm the idea that the man is an im im poseor, as their proprietors knew nothing of such a pcrseu and repudiate his pre tended employment with them. The Smallpox. Persons getting into jail new will find that they will have treuble in gettiug out, as Keeper Butkhelder is carrying out the instructions of the beard of health and no one is allowed te leave except the physi ciau. Prisoners who are an aiting hear ings will net be allowed te come down town for that purpose until there is a decided change for the belter. College Hoaers Awarded. They filled the air and the sky and every thing else. Well, a part of that fleck settled right out in the orchard. It was the prettiest sight I ever saw. Blue pigeons mingled in among apple blossoms. Every tree in the orchard w&3 a mass of jnst the brightest colors of blue and white. I never forget, it, never want te. That was somewhere near seventy years age. My wife remembers it. Where can you find a heroine of loftier quality than the old irreneh widow, Mrs. Louisa Guedan, who was suffocated in the Greene street fire? Mrs. Guedan had in herited from her husband the manufactory of artificial leaves, in which .the fire broke out se quickly and raged se furiously. Upen the explosion of the chemicals, through whieh the building was at once wrapped in flames, the brave little widow, seventy years of aire, made for the stairs, rushed up te the second story threw herself against the deer of her workmen's room, shouted "Fire!" ran ud the second stairway through the stifling smoke, ana upwara again te the top story, struggling te rescue a mother and her four children who had quarters there. A workman en the second story taught a giunpse of her as she ran up higher te save these helpless ones, but a dense cloud of black smoke that rolled up immediately shut her out from view, and only a half-stifled cry reached him from above as he escaped through the window. " The firemen," says a reporter who tells' the tale, "when they made their way up after a fierce fight with the flames, found Mrs. Guedan dead en the upper landing, at the deer 6f the people she had tried te save." The mother and four children, for whose sake she lest her like, had been out of the house, unbeknown te Mrs. Guedan, before the fire took place, and se were away from the danger. Wells in Our Continent. i Solidarity, A rose boasted of its beauty, as separa ting it from the rest of the world. " There would be no-rose," said the rain, "without me." "There would be no re3e," said the sun, " without me." "There wenld be no rose," said the soil, " without me." And the tree which sheltered it, and the trestle which supported it, and the gardener who cultivated if, anil the florist who bought it said that without them there would be no rose. The seed, the stem, the leaves, and even the thorns all claim credit for the rese. At last, the little flower acknowledged that everything ministered te it, and consoled itself, in turn, by reflecting that it also ministered te everything else. MAUIUSla. Philadelphia Market.
