The monthly report of the city supcriu supcriu tendant was read as fellows : Lancaster, Pa , April 5, 1S3J. Te the Beard of Hchoel Directors. Gentlemen Your city superintendent presents the follewiug report of the pub lie schools for the month of March : The whole number of pupils was, in the high school, 218 ; secondary, 1,0G8 ; primary, 1,950 ; total, 3,230. The average number in attendance was, in the high schools, 209 ; secondary, 923 ; primary, 1,004 ; total, 2,730. The average percentage was 80. The report of Seuth Duke strect school shows an attendance of 48, with an aver aver avor aeo of 33. The city superintendent made 120 visits te the schools, in addition te which, they were visited by directors as louews : J. W. Byrne 1, A. Oblender 1, A. Z. Ring wait 7, J. B. Warfel 27, J. Samson 13, L. Richards 14, W. A. Morten 11, J. M. Johnsten?, M. Brosius 2, G. W. Zechcr 5, C. ZecherS, W. O. Marshall 2, W. Mc Comsey 1, total 98. The examination of the pupils of the first classes in the secondary schools, in physiology took place en the 10th of the month, in the room of the girls' high school, and was attended by 73 boys and 77 girls. Te avoid confusion and te de the work mere carefully, the former wcre examined in the forenoon and the latter in the afternoon. The papers of the girls are superior te these of the boys in penmanship, spelling, expression and general appearance, although a few of the latter presented papers equal te the best of the girls. Accompanying this will be found conies of the questions given, te enable the members te judge of the work expected te be done in these classes. We emit the questions. The papers were ex amined in regard te spoiling ana physiol ogy, and attention will be given te spelling in all the papers written hereafter by the pupils passing their examination for ad mission te the hieh schools. It becomes my sad duty te report the death of Miss D. Rexy Bair, at her home, en the evening of the 4th inst. Of her it may well be said that she steed, indeed, in loco varentta te the little ones whose school. Unassuming, industrious, faith-f ful in the full sense of that word, she was beloved by all who came in contact with her. Iler school was always full ; no pu pils asked te be transferred. Resting new Irein her labors, her works de fellow her. Very respectfully, Your obedient servant, R. K. BUEIIKLE. Opening ulirUtlan Street. Mr. Baker moved that the chairman of the property committee be authorized te sign ou behalf of the beard any paper necessary te be signed by property owners te bring before court the question et opening North Christian stteet. The mo tion was adopted. Anether New Scheel Heuse. The matter of building a new school house in the eastern end of the city, post poned at last meeting, was taken up. The question was ou the motion instructing the property cemmittee te proceed forthwith te builil en the Sherman strect let, or if they taeught the let tee small te build upon te buy the adjoining let and build i.irt!v en both. Mr. Hartman said that he had visited the location and was net pleased with it. Even if the adjoining let was bought it would add only 19 feet te the let. He had also'.Ieoked at two lets en the northeast corner of Aim and Grant streets. By buy ing them, a let 100 by 123 feet would be secured. Oue of the lets can be bought for $1,000 and the ether for $1,300. He thought the price rather tee high, but he did net knew where the beard could de better. The ground lies high and is in a geed location. Mr. Baker feared that -if a new let was bought, the oue new owned by the beard would have te be sold at a sacrifice Besides, he did net think it necessary te build all our school houses after the satne pattern. Neither thy Mauer strcet nor New street houses are very geed speci mens of architecture. He thought Prof. Buohrle's plan of a new building ou the Sherman street let a very pretty aud con venient one. Mr. MeCouemy moved as au amend ment te the pending motion that the com cem cem mitteo ou buildings aud grounds be authorized te buy the lets at the corner et Ann and Grant streets, providing they did net cost mere than $2,500. The raotieu was adopted. Mr. Warfel moved that the cemmittee be instructed te proceed forthwith, after purchasing the ground te erect thoreou a four-room school buildiug. The motion was agreed te. Alius Ilalr'd Funeral. An iuvitatieu te attend the fuueral of Miss D. Rexio Bair en Saturday, April 7, at 2 o'clock, and that the president ap point four members of the beard as pall bearers, according te the wish of do de ccased, was accepted by the beard. The president appointed Messrs. Byrne, G. W. Zechcr, Marshall and Rhoads pall bearers. Mr. Baker thought seme appreciation of Miss Bair's siirvices should be ac knowledged by the beard. He moved that the sentiments expressutl by Uhe superintendent in his report be adopted as the sentiments el the beard, i no motion was unanimously agreed te.
