There is no village close te Londen which preserves its classic grace and air of lettered antiquity se thoroughly at Sloke Pegis. With the ene exception of that hideous mansion which testifies te the Palladian taste of Wy at t, there is no build ing at Stoke which thrusts upon the visitor a conviction that it did net exist iu Gray's time at least. The village itself has rather dwindled than expanded ; the famous house of the Hattens has shrunk te a cluster of chimney-stacks. But the wonderful church remains, with its at mosphere of eighteenth century poetry around it, and the sentiment of its um brageous churchyard. Mr. Frederick Slocembe, the distinguished etcher, has just paid a fine tribute te its beauty, and te the genius of Gray, in a large etching, which is published by Mr. Onntherne, of Vige street. It represents the picturesque structure built by Sir Jehn Malines 500 tiira nan in fhn rih t.wilinht. which thn peec has discribed in his " Elegy." This imaginative impression of the scene will be valued by many who have visited Gray's tomb, and who agree with a dis tinguished American that there are com cem paratively few buildings in Ohie at once se ancient and se picturesque as the church of Stoke Pegis. . m Surviving a Terrible Deed.
