fcANCASTEK bATLY KTEIttEN(K, lttcastet JntelUgencet. MONDAY KVBNOTG, MABCH 28, 1883, .Easter Cgg ad Other Tblnga. Philadelphia Times.- The Pascbe egg is e ancientrau institu tion that thew people who insist upon searching for the origin of everything have as hard a time te trace this custom te its source as de the philologists te determine the etymology of Easter. It does net matter much whether the English name for the festival called in most languages from the Passover bave anything te de with the nam of a pagan goddess, or whether it relates te spring or te the dawa, as etymologists variously explain ; everybody knows what the word signifies, and that is enough. Se with the Easter eggs. We can wander indefinitely among the obscurities et ancient ymoeiism aim net be any the wiser ; we shall probably come back after all te the obviens signifi cance of the egg as a symbol" of the Res urrection or et the potentiality of life beyond the grave and with that we may as well be satisfied. The association of the rabbit with Eas ter does net belong te English tradition This queer little chap with the long ears and the plaintive eyes that leek out 'from all the shop windows comes te us from Germany. In the German folk lore the rabbit or bare is in some way supposed te be the parent of the colored egg ; at least they are found in its burrow, or he brings them, perhaps from the same border land where the stork brings the babies. In many legends the hare figures as a mes senger or herald among the animals, and it may be that this has something te de with bis appearanee with the announce ment of Easter morn ; but he is such a gentle, pretty little fellow that nobody can object te his prominence. The vari ous ether animals and the assortment of poultry that the shopkeepers have lately produced at Easter are merely a stupid vulgarization of misunderstood customs, and as a matter of taste and common sense they ought te be frowned down. We have a tendency in America te overdo everything that we de at all, and the recent development of Easter tokens, like the abuse of Christmas cards add the like, is both senseless and obnexibus te geed taste as "well as te a reverent spirit. There is a very tender, poetie sentiment conveyed in the exchange of Easter greetings a simple card, a pretty little token, or a cluster of fresh flowers. . This is an old fashion and a geed one. The new fashion degrades the Easter token te the level of slop-shop advertising or some thing lower still, or else gives it a preten tiousness that is as far as possible from symbolizing the spirit of the day. Tree flaming in Kansas. Becerd. The state of Kansas has made an en couraging beginning in tree planting. Twe plantations of five hundred acres each in Crawford county illustrate what may be achieved in this direction. One of the plantations is conducted by the Feit Scott & Gulf railroad company, primarily te furnish ties and timber for its own use, and with a view te effect ultimately a great saving by its enterprise. The west eru catalpa (catalpa spteiesa) appeal s te be the tree preferred ler planting en the prairies. It is a native of the lowlands along the streams in Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri. The weed is tenacious of lire is soft and almost indestructable. even when exposed te the weather, ard has proved se durable that the farmers in Missouri, it is" said, have nearly extermi nated the species in their eagerness te secure it for fence peBts. It is also an ex ceedingly rapid grower. A block of one hundred thousand seedlings planted in the spring of 1870 in the Pert Scott forest already ranges from ten te fifteen feet in height, while the individual trees vary in circumference from eight te eleven inches.
