"Shak. Everybody recognizes spring, when it is once upon us, but many persons are net fa miliar with the exact date et Its appearance. Webster, the world-renewucd lexicographer gives us a definition, which may net be inap propriate here. "Spring," says he "is the season of the year wlien plants begin te vege tate and rise; the vernal season, comprehend ing the months et March, April and May. In the middle latitudes north of the equator." Thomsen, in Ids "Seasons,' and Shakspcaie In many of his works, have, perhaps, no peers In describing it, and yet "cthcriaf spring" is fjntghtcd with malaria, "that Insidious fee, Heiking unseen In the very air we breathe." It spreads ever tbe fairest portions et our land ; brings death and dl3case te thousands ; cuts ett scores upon scores et our children and youth, as well as these in advanced life. A pestilence Is regarded, with little less appre- hensieu, and reeplc everywhere are asking, ' what is it ?" " Where does i ceme from t" "Whatwlllcurcit?" Kidney-Wert, as a Spring Medicine. When you begin te lese appetite . have a headache, a pain In yenr side, back, and shoulders; te toss about at night in lestless dreams ; wake In the morning with a foul mouth and furred tongue ; feel disinclined te go about your work, heavy in body and op pressed In mind; have a fit of the blues, when your urine gets scanty or high-colored; te suffer with constipation, diarrheea ; or Indigestion ; have a pasty, sallow face, dull eyes, and a blotched skin, one or all of these common complaints will certainly be evi dences that your liver Is disordered, torpid, or perhaps diseased. A bottle of Kidney Kidney Wert Is, under such circumstances, a price less been te such a person. Bare assertions of proprietors have ceme te possess less force than they frequently merit. The cause of this condition et popular step tlclsm is, In the main, te be found in the tact that charlatanism covers our bread land. Meritorious articles are tee frequently found In bad company. The proprietors of Kidney-Wert always prove all their astertient, touching themeiits of their preparations. When we affirm, theie theie fere, that Kidney-Wert is a specific for Ju3t such disorders as have been mentioned in this article, the proof, tee, belongs te and shall, fellow this statement. A Physicians Experience Dr R. K. Clark, a regular physician of ex tensive practice in Grand Isle County, and a worthy deacon of tbe Congregational Church, at Seuth Here, Vt., has used Kidney-Wert for several years in his practice, and before the present proprietors purchased an Interest In it, he had given his unDlascd opinion in its favor. This opinion has net changed. " It has done better than any ether remedy I have ever used," says the Dqcter, and, further en he writes : I de net recollect an instance where the patient te whom I have given It lias failed te receive benefit trem its use, and in some severe cases most decidedly se." These are strong words. They are from a representa tive, conscientious, ever-approachable public citizen, however, and better still they are true. Kidney-Wert will bear all tbe encenlums lavished upon It by its friends -and their name Is legion. " I will swear by Kidney Kidney Wert all the time," writes Mr. J. R. Kauflman, or Lancaster, Pa. We will supplement thl by asserting, as a matter of fact, and one capable of demonstration, that all honest patrons ej this remedy are its friends and advocates. mlC lwdeed&w K1DNKY WORT FOK SILK AT U. The oyster shuckers oflfeltimere hare a playful custom of visiting rival estab lishments and " cebbing " everybody they can lay hands en. This jelly sport con sists of catching some unlucky fellow by the arms and feet and bumping him three times aeainBt a doorpost or anything else that's hard and convenient. Sometimes an impromptu buttress is formed by forc ing another shucker down en his knees and hands. Recently a gang of colored shuckers from . B. Mallery & Ce.'s get through their work early and made a raid en the white shuckers at Ludington Ce.'s. They rushed into the beuse with a whoop and began cebbing right and left. The fun was furious, and was uninter rupted until tbey took held of Frank Carisb, who resisted and showed fight. Then Frank's big brother Michael stepped forward and interfered. The result was that Michael and one of tbe colored shuckers, Jehn Mitchell, had a row and Mitchell was arrested. The case was tried in the criminal court yesterday. Mr. Harris Chilton was counsel for Mitchell, and Mr. Campbell for the state. The jury was composed of ten white men and. two colored. One of the latter was a dark, t-ignifled man, who looked as though he might beaelass leader. The ether was lighter in color, and se far as proportions are concerned, somewhat resembles Vice President David Davis. He seemed te appreciate the dig nity of his position and smiled geed humeredly. Beth the colored jurors took a lively interest in the trial, especially when Mr. Chilton called special attention te them by asking the witnesses te speak loud enough for them te hear. The evi dence for the prosecution wa!s that Mit chell had assaulted Carish and bit him ever the head with a shovel, knocking him down and injuring him se badly that he was in bed for several weeks. The colored jurors shook their heads at this information and frowned severely. Then came the evidence for the defense, showing that the cebbiug was all a joke, and that Carish had really begun the assault by charging upon Mitchell with an uplifted hammer. Mitchell, it is stated, had acted only in self defence. The frowns disap peared from the faces of the colored jurors immediately. They smiled and nodded their heads knowingly at the ether jurors. The white jurors also smiled, and a verdict of net guilty was quickly rendered. m CAPT. KAUS VKRI ANUKV. He Resigns Ills Place en the AlUslsslppt River Commission. The Mississippi river commission, in New Orleans from an inspection of" the works below Caire, held a meeting en Dearu their steam beat, the Mississippi lying at tbe head of Lafayette stieet, at which Captaiu Eads was present. He had net been with the commission en their inspecting tour, but remained at the jetties. The chief topic of disoussien was the alleged danger of the diver sion of the waters of the Mississippi from the present channel into the Atchafalaya and the best means of meeting such a threatened calamity. Capt. Eads held that the city of New Orleans was in great danger from the river seeking this outlet te the gulf, leaving it en the banks of a dead lagoon. He found tha cloying of the Atchafalaya outlet a solid wall, the effect of which, he said, would be te increase the velocity of the current and its ability te scour out the channel through his jettiss te the sea. He offered a resolution for the clearing of the Atchafalaya. In this he met with no second, the ether members being content te place a sill across tbei head of the river te shoal its drain te eighteen feet and prevent fur ther irruption. The plans of the sur veys of Majer Stickney were examined and fully discussed, and they aided in strengthening the conviction of the ma jority that there was no danger of the supposed division of the Mississippi through the Atchafalya, that is. within the next few hundred years. The rcse lutien was finally put te a vote, however, but all voted against it except its author. The meeting then closed. The beat was ordered te return up the river. The com mission dispersed te their homes. Capt. Eads exhibited considerable temper and told the commission he would no longer remain with them. He immediately for warded his resignation te the president. He recommended, however the appoint ment of Cel. Henry Flad, of St. Leuis, in his place. The following members of the commission were aboard : Gen. C. B. Comstock, president; Judge Tayler, Majer B. M. Harred, Prof. Mitchell, Captain Eads, Capt. 'C. B. Sears, and Lieut. Smith S. Leach, secretary. A Japanese Wedding. On Monday last, says the Japan Weekly Mail, the marriage of Miss Inenye and Mr. Katsuneske Ineuye was celebrated at the official residence of His Excellency Inouye minister for foreign affairs. 'The ceremony was conducted in Japanese fashion, and attended only by the near relatives and intimate friends of the family. The wed ding presents were displayed in an upstairs room, and of course attracted much atten tion. With few exceptions the Japanese gifts, though costly and attractive, were intended te express a sentiment rather than te serve any useful purpose. Most prominent was a mountain formed of rolls of floss silk, white and crimson. Each roll was bound with strands of parti cel. ered twine, the ends net brought round into a bow, as is usually the case, but tied in hard knots, emblematic of the indis solubility of the marriage tie. The floss silk was intended te typify gentle yet en during constancy, the strength of its skeins offering a noted contrast te' their softness and flexibility. Round the base of this mountain were disposed a number of or naments of fresh rice straw, plaited into tbe forms of the storks and tortoises, of longevity, or the pine, bamboo and plum, of perpetual bloom, while . into the loops of the plaits were thrust pieces of dried bonito, a favorite accompaniment of wed ding presents, its name (katsu wo-beshi) being a homenyme for the three' Chinese characters signifying victorious, manly and brave. i A Vendetta In Italy. A tragedy of a singular kind was enacted tbe ether day in a village of the department of Yancluse called Cheval Blanc. Ten years age an Italian navvy, who had been working an the railway then in course of construction, was tried for manslaughter, the witness who was mainly instrumental in securing his con victien being a peasant belonging te tbe village of Cheval-BIauc. The navvy was sentenced te ten years' penal servitude, and en leaving the deck he declared that when he had served bis time he would come baek and take his revenge. About a fortnight age He reappeared in the vil lage, and meeting the wife or the peasant, told her that she mkjht consider her bus banda dead aaa. 'She at once save in- XornwtieatottelKMamerje of hisprei search made for him and nude his appear ance at the farmhouse inhabited by the peasant early en Sunday morning. The man was still in bed and when ha looked out of the window and recognized the Italian he took up a gun, which he kept by bis bedside, and fired two shots, killing his weuld.be murderer en the spot. The Italian was armed with a revolver and a long knife. m Proposed Bagar Beet Industry. The National beet sugar manufactur ing company en Monday had an agent in Hatboro, Pa., who examined the sur rounding farming country, for the purpose of ascertaining it the seu is adapted te the cultivation of the sugar beet. Heexpreses himself as highly pleased with the char, aeter of the soil, and appointed a meeting en next Tuesday for the farmers te meet the managers of the company, te find out if they will agree te raise 2,000 acres of beets and agree te sell them te the com pany for a term of years. The agent stated if the farmers would raise the beets the company would expend about 1250,000 in the erection of buildings and machinery that are necessary for the successful man ufacture of sugar and molasses from the sugar beet. The farmers interviewed leek favorably upon the project, and the council offer te exempt the company from all borough taxes for a period of twenty years. This same offer is open te any ether manufacturing enterprise that will locate in Hatboro.
