Iu an edi terial article upon the subject of the tariff March 5th iust , I notice that you make ube of tbe expression " as inconsequential as the pepe s bull against the comet." The word " ineffectual " would have probably conveyed our meaning better tbau inconsequential." But no matter. We will net t-pht hairs upon that. Being of a cuiieus turn, and supposing from the off baud manner iu which yen qtlete that you have bad ocular proof of the fact, or, at least, geed authority for your implied belief in the existence of such a bull, or decretal, I would ba pleased te learn of you the name of the pepe who issued it, its date, and, if possible, the text ipsissimis verbis. There is nothing better for a writer thau the power te verify his quotations, at least, se says seme notable English writer, I forget whom. I have seen and read the bulls of many popes, disciplinary and comminatory, but have net jet met with the one you refer te. True, I have frequently met with illusions te it, but they have been gener ally made by theso who have sought te threw odium upon, and te ridicule the Catholic church and its teachers. I de net think that iu this case you had any such intention, but would it net be well te have se much legard for the sentiments of our fellowmen as te avoid giving offense by scoffing and sneering at what they held sacred. A belief existed at ene time, which Iknew has net yet entirely passed away that comets did, or might exert an evil influence upon the human race, and it maybe that at some time, seme pope may by a bull have called upon the faithful te offer prayer te Almighty Ged for his protection against cemetary or ether supposed evil influences--, even as we de new when any great danger threatens. Bat that would net be a " hull against the comet." Columbia, March 13, 1883. Z. Violating Ke venue Laws. Deputy United States Marshal J. A. Hellinger last night arrested B. F.
