The grand jury in the Newhall house
disaster, at Milwaukee, yesterday found a
true bill against Scheller, former lessee of
the bar room, charging him with arson.
The indictment has three counts. The first
charges him " with wilfully, maliciously
and feloniously setting fire te and burning
the Newhall house at night, causing the
death of Themas B. Elliett, David G.
- Tower, Rebert Hewie, Kate Conners,
Lizzie Anglin, and Libbie Chellis." The
second count repeats the first and adds
that the building " was owned by the
Newhall house stock company, a corpora
tion created and existing by and under
the laws of.Wiscensin." The third count
is a repetition of the second, with the ad
dition that " the building was leased te
and occupied by Jehn T. Antisdel."
Scheller was taken into court in the after
noon, and pleaded net guilty te the in
dictment. His bail was fixed at $10,000.
The grand jury was still in session last
evening considering the responsibility of
the owners and managers of the hotel.
Seventy Men in a Lumber Camp Poisoned
A lumberman, Alf. Elverson, arrived in
Milwaukee, from Manistee, and reported
te Captain Jehn Fitzgerald that 70 men
were poisoned te death Sunday in a lum
ber camp near Glencoe, Mich. A new
cook had just commenced work and the
first batch of biscuits he mixed with a can
of strychnine, used le poison wolves, by
mistake for baking powder. The deadly
biscuits were eaten by every man in camp
and 70 out of 80 died in horrible agony, no
physician being near and nobody being
familiar with antidotes at hand. The story
seems improbable, but is given for what
it is worth. Capt. Fitzgerald says the
news comes from reliable seurcesand he
believes it is true. The camp is 20 miles
from telegraphic communication in the
forest.
