UHASTER AT UK.UDffOUD Later Particular of the calamity The Floed Peurluc in Upen Imprisoned Miner Lamentations and Wee. Braidwood, Ills., Feb. 17. This city is tilled with lamentation, owing te the terrible disaster of yesterday, which re suited in the death of seventy persons, who were overwhelmed by a Lmd slide, a number of these killed leaving large families. The place where the accident occurred, was in shaft Ne. 2 of the Wil mingten coal mining company a mines. The mine is situated at Diamond, two miles from this place. The country thereabouts is a level prairie with a slight inclination toward the mine and heavy raius had trausfermed it into a lake for milt s and miles around. Yes terday without warning there appeared au opening in the earth and the water poured into the mine drowning all who were un able te get out at ence. The mine was constructed by sinkinga shaft seventy-live feet perpendicularly and divergiug into two main galleries. Running horizontally from these main galleries narrow spurs or gangways are du out in various direc tions, rising and falling with the ledge of coal, sometimes coming withiu twolve feet of the surface. Bew It Ungau. It was at such a point near the top where the break occurred. While lying ou his back picking away at his coal above, the earth must have fallen upon the first victim and through this opening water poured in. These galleries were low and narrow, and the peer victims could escape euly by paintully slew crawling. There was little time te spread au alarm, for in less than an hour every av enue of escape was choked up, and every occupant of the mine at that time must havh been drowned. Ne noise acuempau ied the rising waters, and the ilrst indi cation of the coming danger the deemed men received, was the cold water tack ling alone the pathway where they lay at work. Ne Hepe Fer Theui. There is net the slightest hepa of find ing any of the men alive. The majority of them are foreigners, English, Scotch and Irish. There will be some suffering among their families, but as a rule they were net improvident. Their pay aver aged between $50 and $75 per month and most of them owned the own houses.
