LANCASTER DAILY INTELL1GENCEB, FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 16. Ib3. Lancaster Jntelltgnicer. FEIDAY FVENING, FEB. 10, 1383, GKAKTINO. Seme Timely Hints en the Subject. Gerui&utewn Telegraph. The season will soeu open when grafting fruit trees may be commenced, and these who Lave any grafting te be done, and are net up te doing the work themselves, should leek around for some capable per son te de it for them : and it should be disposed of at as early a day as possible, or outdoor farm labor will start with a rush and the comparatively trifling a thing as grafting will be forgotten until it has be come tee late te be attended te, and has has te be passed ever with the thought that it will de just as well te be attended te next year, when it shall be done without fail, etc. There is always somebody te be found who understands uralting and who will de all one lias te de in half a day, at a charge of from two te four cents per graft. In providing the grafts it is better for each one te obtain from neighbors, who will or ought te 2ive away the grafts they have te .pare, as we have done for about fertv vears, having cut them and stuck them in the ground a couple of inches at the loot of each tree, m erder that while they will be perfectly preseived in this way there will be no mistake as te the variety. As we have mere than once suggested, every laimer and gardener ought te be capable of doing his own grafting. When once uudcrhtevd, there is nothing mere .simt le or easy. A quarter of an hour zyul in observing any geed grafter at weik ought te be long enough te instruct hew it 'S done and te de it. In order that these who may dt sire te attend te their own grafting may possess the best infor mation we can eiler them en the gei eral subject, we will repeat what our own ex perience enables us te communicate. Stocks or limbs te be grafted, net ever two inches in diameter, should be cut off at the distance of four inches. A fine saw should be used. Incline the saw . that the stump, if perpendicular, will shed the rain. ' The bark must be uuiu jured. With a sharp knife smooth off the h'iwed stump. Take a case kuifu, which is as geed as any, place it across the heart of the stock, and force it down with a wooden mallet. We use a very narrow screw driver for keeping open the split. .Shape the scion wedge fa-hieu both ways, keeping the bark intact.. We make a shoulder as far up as the scion is shaved ; which though net se strong, belter in sures growth. The inside of the hark el both scion and j-.teck should meet or cress, in order that the sap of the two may com mingle. Set the scion at a slight aut:lc spreading from each ether. When the stock is small and only one scion inserted, place a piece of weed en the opposite side of corresponding thickness. l( the slit does net close up sufficiently, tic round a cotton Kiting te ke?p it tight upon the graft. Cever with khx- ccery part of the cut and ."lit. In three weeks' time go ever the grafts and re wax if needed. It is air and tain getting in that destroy. Whetc the limb te be grafted is lretu two te four inches ever, it should be cut say six inches from the tree, and from four te six scion may be inserted. When there ts only grafting te be done en one's own premises we make the wax, as we have often published it, and as we have used it upon our own ptemises for some feity years as fellows : Four paits el tesin, one part of beeswax, and one part of beef tallow. Melt them together in a skillet (which is the best,) or a tiucupand stit well. It should remaiu in the vcstel and use as needed. Apply with a light wooden paddle or spatula. Twenty or thirty scions can be waxed with ens warm ing up. When much grafting is te be done a little fire for heating the wax should be jnale between two bricks or stones. New, having said se much en this sub ject, we will close by adding that any professional grafter, by sending his name and address te us will have it inserted gratuitously net se much for the benefit of the giallff as tho-e having grafting te de.
