A FIERCE FJKE RAGING IN TH E SHAFT- Discovering the Flames by Escaping Car Car benlzect Oxide Gag A Perpendicular Vein Serving as the Chimney or tbe Con flagration Krclted miners. Pottsville Dispatch te the Press. A large and fierce fire is new raging at Bear Valley shaft, three miles west of Suamekin, and it is feared the colliery will have te be flooded te extinguish the flames. The shaft is owned and operated by the Philadelphia and Reading coal and iron company, and is ene of the best in the region, it cmpieyea juu men ana boys, and is practically a new working. A new breaker has just been erected, and raining was te begin in earnest next week. The vein is almost perpendicular in that vicin ity. The fire was discovered near the west gangway by the miners becoming sick by the carbonized oxyde gas thrown off. A search for the fire was made, as this gas denoted that a fire was in progress, and the flames were located between breasts Ne.9 and 10 iu a man way. The company's superintendent, Mr. Beeth, at once put a force of men at work, driving the opening parallel with the man way for the purpese of getting at the headway made by the flames, and utilizing a line of hose attach ed te the man pump in arresting their progress and extinguishing them. This was completed, and the stream is new be ing thrown en an exposed portion of the lire, but owing te the formation of the the vein the purpese intended cannot ba effectively accomplished. The rear of lire can be distinctly heard in the gangway, and though nothing de finite can be said of its extcnt, it is be lieved te be beyond control, unless flood ing is resorted te. It is net known hew the fire started, but ifc is supposed te have originated in a breast and is working its way te the gangway. A large force of men, headed hy Geerge S. Clemens, chief mining engineer of the district, and Superintendent Beeth are at work endeavoring te subdue the conflagra tion. All the fire hese of Shamokin and quantities taken from the neighboring collieries have been brought te the col liery te be used if possible. Great ex citement prevails in the vicinity of the shaft, which is Mirreunded by gioupsef anxious miners. FIHNUlSIt ; ter liKlitAYKl). A Scheme te Hum a ISulldlng Containing Tlirce Sleeping ulillure!!. Richmond, Intl., Dispatch te the Times. A plot te burn a building containing tlnee small children :.slep in bed, for the insurance en a stock of old clothing, was betrayed te the police last night by a conscience stricken confederate. Mendel Fryset is a young Polish Jew from Russia. Last night he visited pelice headquarter and disclosed a plot te destroy property by fire, tvhich culminated in the arrest of Isaac Grtipp and wife, proprietors of a second-hand store and renovating estab lishment en Seuth Sixth street, near Main. The Grupp family have only lived iu Richmond about sixty days. Seven or eight days age Mis. Grupp went te Gin eiiinatiand while there met young Fryset and persuaded him te accompany her te this city, premising hitn employment, lie had twenty-five dellais in cash which he ledged with Mrs. Grupp as hcctiritj-, and received a little hteci: of odds anil cuds which he began peddling ever the country, but he was net fortunate. His goods were net such as the people seemed te desire and his sales were few and profit less. A stranger iu a strange l.tud he he came greatly eisheaitened. Befmc this, en the 27th day of Decem ber, Isaac Grupp took out a policy for $2,000 insurance en his stock and household goods. Fryset told the police that when he was most discouraged Mrs. Grupp told him that she knew hew he could make 6200 iu a little bit ; that they had tried it in New Yeik and it worked like a c'larni. This money-making scheme was te burn the house and get the insurance and she would pay him $200 for the job. The plan concocted was te set the house ea lire by cotton twine aud matches tied at short spaces among the thread and soaked with coal oil, which was poured en the fleer from one end of the heuse te the ether. A can of oil and a lamp were p'.iccd en a table te account for the ex plosion. Last nigh e was set for the con fl.tgratieu. The proprietors were te visit the pkiy at the Grand opera house aud the clerk was in icadinets for the incendiary's work. The conseieiice of Frv.set began te tumble him and his mind was eetivuhed with fears. Finally he determined that he would net commit the crime and that it was his duty le expose the diabolical scheme te the police. When he told his biery at police headquarters Chief Flem ing and etheis of the force went te the house and found everything as described by the informer. Tue matches were all ready for their fatal work, aud less than fifty dollars' worth of the insurance prep erty remained en the picmises. Twe policemen weie immediately detailed te arrest Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Grupp. The woman was sent te the woman's prison and the man te jail. On the premises a lew articles were found which indicate that they had been scorched iu a previous lirr, thus adding confirmation te the story of the informer. a TiacitusLi: mini: accident. Five Rlcn Iturtcd by a Cave-In "i lirre Re lieved te ee Dend. About two o'clock Saturday afternoon a terrible accident occurred at Jeutis Metzgcr's ere bed, near Ruchsville, Le high county. The men were at work in the shaft, and suddenly, without, warning, the timber crushed down upon them, fol lowed by a mass of earth and ere, burying two of the men in the ground and im prisoning three in the trench behind the barrier. The mass of timber and earth struck William Metzger en the head, com pletely covering uim, nothing being visible but the tip 6T his' lingers. A ferce of men were immediately put te wei k digging him out, but this was found te be a diffi cult matter, as the earth fell in as fast as removed. He is badly hurt, though it is thought net fatally. It was noticed tint Iho men inside the shaft wcre still aliv One of the men, named Jehn Hillard, rue cccdcd in digging his way out, but the passage of his exit whs immediately cle.-:ed again by the falling in of additional ere and ether debris. His injuries arc net se rious. Elias Huushergcr is supposed te be crushed te death, as no trace of him has been discovered up te a late hour. A large force of employees of the Themas iron company, together with a number of ether workmen, are busily engaged in rescuing these remaining iu the shaft with the hepe of finding them still alive, but the general belief is that they are already dead, being crushed by the terri terri ble weight of oie, etc. The spot is sur rounded by hundreds of people from surrounding towns aud excited and terror-stricken friends making inquiries regarding ilia victims of Hie disaster. Later. Elias llunsbcrgcr is cartaiuly dead, as no trace of him has been dis covered. His escape from death would be impossible, as many tens of earth and ere must have fallen en him. Three extra trains were run Saturday night en the Catasauqua and Fogelsvillo railroad te convey workmen te the scene of the acci dent who were te assist in digging out the unfortunate men. The great difficulty is that new earth falls in as fast as the ether earth is re moved and it may require all of Monday te get Mr. Hun8bereer out. Jehn Hilliard. who worked his way out, is very sick from fright and his injuries. He is net expect ed te live. The affair was kept very quiet, in order te pre vent interference by the authorities. Twenty-three rounds were fought. In the ninth round McFerrau drew first bleed, but after that the fightiug was forced by Mcintosh, who had everything his own way. In the twenty-third round McFe: rau went te the fleer beneath the force of a tremendous blew, and being unable te respond te the call te tee the scratch the referee declared Mcintosh the winner. The struggle was severe en both sides and marked by pluck and science, but McFcr ran was an unequal match for his burly, big-fisted opponent. He was terribly punished.
