Messrs. Kunhardt & Ce., agents of the Hamburg-American packet company in New Yerk, received a cable dispatch from Hamburg, informing them that the .Brit ish steamer Sultan, which arrived at Hamburg en Friday night, had been in collision in the German ocean off Berkum with an unknown steamer, supposed te be the Hamburg-American packet company's steamer Cimbria. A dense fog prevailed at the time. Later in the day another dispatch was received by Messrs. Kun hardt & Ce., as fellows : Hamburg, January 20. " The Cimbria was sunk Friday morn ing twelve miles southwest of Berkum by the British steamer Sultan. She sank fifteen minutes after the collision. Thirty nine persons landed at Cuxhaven this evening. Other beats are still out. Out steamers Bavaria and Hansa and several tugs leave te search for ether beats." The Cimbria left Hamburg for New Yerk, January 17, and she was te have left Havre for New Yerk yesterday. The Cimbria was an iron vessel of u,02e tens. She was built in the ya.rd new owned by Caird & Ce., of Greenock, Scot land, in 1SC7, and was 326 feet in length, 40 feet in breadth, and 2G feet depth of held. She was fitted with three decks and six bulk heads. Her engines Were of 500 herse power, and she had two inverted direct acting cylinders, 72x48 inches. She was rated A 1 by American Lloyds. The dispatches contain no information as te the number of passengers carried by the steamer at the time of the disaster, and it is net yet known hew many persons have been lest. Berkum, off which the collision between the Sultan and Cimbria occurred, is an island in the North Sea, 26 miles north west of Enid cd, Prussia. The Cimbria carried an asserted cargo, which was fully insured. The passenger agents of the Cimbria are Messrs. C. B. Richards & Ce., Ne. 61 Broadway. A reporter called at the deck of the company at Hoboken. The steamer Rugia is new lying at the company's decks at the feet of Third street. One of the offi cers said : " I knew nothing of the acci dent at all. The Cimbria was commanded by Captain Hansen, who was a brave man and a thoroughly geed seaman." Mr. J. F. II. Myers, of the firm of Kuudhardt & Ce., the agents of the line, said : " Capt. Hansen, who commanded the Cimbria, was a competent, trustworthy man, and had been in our employ for eight years. This is quite a busy season for us and the Cimbria must have had en beard at the time of the collision between 400 and 500 passengers, besides which she carried a crew numbering 105 persona. I fear from the cable dispatch that the less of life must be very great. The steamer was what we call a 12 mile vessel . Twe years age we had new compound engines and new beileis placet! in her. She cai ried eight life beats and as is our custom was inspected pre vious te every voyage." Fears arc entertained for the safety of the Hamburg American line's steamer Letharingia, wl-ich sailed fnm Hamburg for the West Indies en October 25 last. She is a freight beat, and no report of her arrival at her pert of destination has yet. been received, and news should have been received had she safely reached it. ONLYOSElirTU CRKW SAVK1). The Krlg niurlpnsi Slnkn After a Collision With llin Hteanifir Uaulma. The steamer Camien, of the Cromwell line, plying between New Yerk and Hali fax, N. S., arrived in New Yerk en Fri day evening ever 24 hours behind time, owing te a collision with the biig Maii Maii Maii posaeff Fisher's island in Leng Island sound, in which the brig was sunk and all her crew, except one seaman named Charles Powers, were lest. The vessel left Halifax en the 15th inst., with a full cargo and eight passengers for New Yerk. The voyage was uneventful until en the morning of the 10th inst., when in the race off Fisher's island, they sighted the brig Mariposa ahead, bearing down en the Cauima. " We saw," said the first efli cer, " that a collision was inevitable the moment we sighted the brig, and our en. giues were stepped and rcveissd. The brig struck us en the pert bow ; two holes were stove in our side and our topmast was carried away." The Cauima, which by this tirae had stepped, attempted te pick up the men from the brig, which was rapidly sinking. The crew of this brig, many of whom rushed into the cabin for their personal effects, took a beat aiid were just leaving the vessels side when with a pitch she went down. The suction overturned the small beat and threw the men iute the water. Captain Davics, of the Canima, who was present, said : "The scene which followed the everlurninsr of the small beat cannot be described. T;ie shrieks of the men were heartiewling. There was no use in trying te swim, as the commotion made by the sinking of the brig converted the waters iute a whirl peel. Eveiy man except Powers went down and he barely escaped with his life. Had it net been for ear watertight apart ments, our own vessel would have sunk. The Cauima will go en the dry-deck as seen as her cargo is discharged." Charles Powers, the one survivor of the disaster, is a tall, stalwart looking young man about twenty-years of age and lives in Eastport, Me. He had se lar recovered from his injuries Saturday morning that he left the Canima and has net since re turned. Powers was asleep at the tirae of the disaster, but was awakened by bearing the pilot call all hands en deck. He with four ethers was in the small beat when it overturned They all managed te get back te the beat, where they clung, calling loudly for assistance. His com paniens one by one lest their held en the upturned beat, and at the time of his res cue he was almost senseless. The crew of the Mariposa consisted of seven seamen and a New Jersey pilot, but Powers did net knew their names. Details of the Disaster. The Cimbria had 23 cabin passengeis, 3G2 steerage aud 92 crew. Se far 39 per sons have been landed at Cuxhaven and 10 at the Wesser lighthouse. The Cimbria sustained such severe in juries that it at once became apparent she must sink almost immediately. The olu elu cers therefore did all iu their power te save lives. Without a moment's less of time lifeboats were distributed among the pissengers and an order was given te lower the beats. This, however, in consequence of the vessel's keeling ever en her side, was found te be very difficult en ene side and absolutely impossible en the ether. While the second officer was still .engaged in cutting the spar loose se that there should be as much driftwood as possible, for the people te cling te when the inevit able foundering occurred the vessel went down under his feet. He seized a spar, but as several ether persons clung te it he was obliged te let go. and he swam te a beat. This beat was subsequently picked up by the Thcta. The second officer steer ed the Thcta te Cuxhaven. Seventeen persons have been saved by the steamer Diamant irem the Wessr lighthouse, mak ing fifty-six thus far known te have been rescued. A survivor from the Cimbria makes the following statement : "The weather was clear up te 11:15 o'clock, but a fog then set in which continued and increased in density. The engines of the Cimbria were kept at full speed until 1:30 o'clock, then at half speed until 2 o'clock, after which they were kept at slew speed. About ten minutes past two o'clock the whistle of another steamer was heard and the en gines of the Cimbria were stepped instant ly. The Sultan's green light was, owing te the fog, net observed until she was only 150 feet from the Cimbria. The latter was struck abaft the first collision bulkhead en the pert side, and she keeled ever te star board and speedily sank." The Theta picked up ene of the Cim bria' s beats at 2 o'clock Saturday after noon and ariived at Cuxhaven about six o'clock. A reporter bearded the Sultan, but both captain and crew absolutely refused te give him auy infor mation. The captain has made a statement before the British consul, but this is inaccessible. Hew a Sailor, Living en l'eas and Wulci' Thought Seven llayd '1 lirce Weeks. Among the passengers of the steamship William Crane, which arrived at Savan nah Friday, was Themas Smith, colored, of Charleston, S. C, who had taken passage en the steamer while at sea from the schooner lighter Deliy Vardcu, of the latter pert. It appears that early Friday morning the lookout en ths steamer dis covered the schooner drifting about under no control, just off Charleston harbor. The steamer blew her whistle, wheu the agile Themas jumped up and showed considerable agility iu his efforts te communicite te the steamer that he wished te be taken aboard. The shiprau alongside of the schooner and took the solitary passenger, casting the vessel adrift. Te the officer of the steamer he said that three weeks age the Delly Yar deu was at aucher in Charleston harbor, and while there the captain and crew went ashore leaving him in charge. During their absence a stiff breeze sprang up causing the vessel te drag her anchors, and she drifted out te sea. During that time he claims te have subsisted en peas and salt water, being unable te han dle the vessel, and that she drifted about at the mercy of the waves. Cant.iin Smith, of the schooner A. D. Lam son, which ai rived en Friday, reports having seen the schooner just off Charles ton yesterday a week age, in fall sight of land, and that he saw this darkey gyiat ing around with a broom, but the wind being from the westward he did net at tempt te ascertain the cause of the strange maneeuvres. The Delly Vnrr'cn broke loose from her moeiings in Ashley river, oil Chielm's mill, during the sudden uus-t of Tuesday night. January 9, se that Tem was at sea just ene week. His thinking it lliree weeks is net te be wondered at. Captain Sniiih vas evidently mistaken in supposing that, he had seen the Delly Varden upon the 5th inst.
