LANCASTER DAILY IKTELL1GENCEE, THU&SDAY. JANUARY 18. 1883. Hancastcr Intelligence THURSDAY EVENING JAN. 18l1883, FaKMKR ANI OAKUENKB. A Mint Werth Remembering. Ucrmantewn Telegraph. 1 ; -p1I te hear in mind that grains, vines, xc, wuicu 3TEDICAZ,. latitudes nrfjuspK. trnit nee?, .,oeiiv flourish well in hicuer than our own, are always sure te de well with us. One IhinK is certain they will prove perfectly hardy ; and the revcrse is generally the case when we attempt te adept Southern products. What may grew and nourish and prove pioiitable as far south as North Carolina may be ex tremely uncertain here. The Seuth, therefore, has a wider field of supply and recuperation than we have even here in a middle state, but we have the advantage that if a grain, plant or vine is once es tablishcd here, it become far mew per manent, and we may add, mere reliable. Iu the extreme North Canada for in stance. the. number and variety of farm e.,.l mLwleu nreuuets are limited te a very few, comparatively, but they arc mere dependable than with our larger and mere extended catalogue In their cultivation, tee, much skill and success is shown from published statement, as well as from per sonal ones furnished by travelers. Hut the question may be asked, is it net niore advisable te confine ourselves te fewer products that arc common here and sure te de well, and cultivate -them with mere assiduity and care, than te divide and weaken our cU'erLs among se many V We aie opposed te specialties, te which many farmers in umercne secuunn iiuuuic, . have always been advocates of a mixed husbandry ; but we should make our own selection from the general catalogue for which our farms may be mere particularly adapted. Trapping MiiBkral. Early spring that is. as seen as the frost is out of the ground these destruc tive and active animals begin their opera tions and play havoc with the roots ei the grass, winter spinach beds, lettuce plants, &c, and this is about tl:e best time te begin trapping them. We notice various modes recommended iu agricultural ex changes for ridding premises cf the muskrat, but they possess very little merit. As we have a small fish pond, and of ceurse a small stream of water te supply it, we are naturally mere or less jtesicu with these rats, and sometimes they have done a gK'at deal of mischief. We have tried various modes of trap pine them, but found nothing te compare with the com mon unbailed s'cel trap. If the: e is a springbt or run it will be noticed that the inuskiajt will always, if shallow enough, use that te the last inch te leach it feeding ground. If the trap Is laid en the bottom in this, with no bait, fastening Uie trap with a piece, of who te a stake pu sued in the ground, the anangemeiit is com plctc and a certain thing. We captmed one season eight incur gaidcn in this way. Alter the Feventh, there was only a per tien of a foreleg in the trap, but the nex.. morning we found a fellow with only three legs. The following season we get two iueic, and al't.n- that th:.y did net make their apjwaranee for several years., and when they did the same plan was ic ic iie.wp.1. Whcievtr the trap was set it m.is alwnvs nl.iced under water sometimes thev pass from a pond stream diiectly into the hank under the water. If se, mark the direction of their holes and dig in the haul: fiem seven te nine feut liem the entrance, and it is almost certain te catch them. The depth at which their nests ;ue made horn the surface of the gicuud is fiem eighteen inches te two iect. We have c;ptured altogether about twenty. A Kemlnlscoiieeol Mie Smate.
