LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, TUESDAY, JANUARY 16. 1S3. Lancaster intelligencer. TUESDAY EVENING JAW. 16, 1883, An Old-Time Husking Bee. Trey Times. Well, here we are in tlie Lie fragrant bam, -with the forty lads and lasses. There has been a clean sweeping between the mown, aud the lloer js as neat as the deck of a man of-war. It is 8 o'clock of a November evening sharp without, te be hure, and a bit frosty within, but what care we, with our coats and caps and shawls and mittens en ? A goodly num ber of lanterns have been hung from the beams and ever the doers and en a wire stretched between the mews, and it is light enough, te see the red com pepping through the curled edges of the husks, as they He piled up in a great heap mid way of the fleer light enough te see the glow of health en the cheeks of the boys and girls and te reveal the traces of the paint pet and the burnt match and the powder rag, if there were aDy there. The poed man of the barn and his buxom dime go about shaking hands with the young peeple, and asking after the " folks," aud when their "buskin' is ceniiu' off?" and hew many cows they are milking, and m feith, without once troubling their heads about " introducing " their guests, or seeing that they are " paired off," which is a hpontauceus proc ss in country gather ings, and always happens te itself. Later in the evening it is expected that nieie of the old folks will drop in, just te see hew the husking come out, and sample sonic of the eoed cheer. Their days of gratuitous activity have long bince passed, but they de " love te see the young lelks enjoy themselves " in the profitable combina tion of business and pleasure ! Wheu the guests have all arrived the heys go te work and pull great armftils of hay from the mew, which limy spread around the heap of cer::. Then each seats himself by bio faveiite girl, draws a bundle of husks into the hay between them and the husking begins. Werk is by no means suffered, however, te interfere with play. The merry jeke gees round ; the stolen mitten travels about, the circle and back te its owner at last. If a girl hap pens te pull the husk from a daik red ear, she must forfeit a kiss te the lad who is nearest or quickest te snatch it. As fast as the cars are removed from the husks they are thrown into two separate piles, one for each party, en opposite sides of the heap and there is sure te be a deal of pleasant rivalryter.ee which side will have the larger heap of corn when the husking is done. It is wonderful te fece hew fast the mountain of uiihusked coin is lowered, though the farmer and his boys keejp bringing fresh basketfuls ami piling them en the heat. xV peift-ct storm of the golden cara keep jaining ea each pile of Cern. As the supply of muteiial fails the contest waxes wanner. The gills threw off their heeds and shawls, and the boys lling aside their overcoats. The warm bleed of health rushes te each c::cek, and the faster the hands fly the brighter de the faces grew, and tlie last few ears ara scrabbled for by the contend ing sides, aud with shouts of merriment the husking is finished. The victorious side is first scived with refreshments. Great platefuls of doughnuts aud " frit ters," aud slices of snowy cake, pics cut in generous pieces, cider and apples, nuts and home-made candy arc passed around. Tlie '' old folks " come stamping in by twos or threes, and are immediately assailed with conflicting steiies of indi vidual prowess and associate achieve ment, and then stuffed with god things te step their laughing. By 11 9 o'clock the festivities are ever, and the merry company disperses two and two. The farmer takes down the lanterns, clises the big barn deer and retires te the kitchen le snioke his pipe and calculate hew many bushels of corn he will :. vc when it is 'off the ear." "ICep te your p'lieeaud your pi:-ec will keep eii." Hilt ynu cannot espeet te keep ynr place without b-'allli, the Inundation of all Mieces-t.
