LANCASTER DAILY IKTEJLLIGKCEB, THURSDAY. DECEMBER 7.1882. Hancaster Intelligencer. THUBSDAY BVENlUO, 1EC. 7, 1882. o A VETERAN ACTEBts. The Celebrated Miss Kelly, Who Made Her first AppMEMUsa-ln 1790. London Atccntcum. A memorial in behalf of Miss Kelly, tho celebrated actress, now in her ninety third year, having been some time back presented to tho piime minister, Mr. Glad stone has jnsta warded her a grant from the Crown 150. Many eminent names vnra subscribed to this memorial, and Mr. Charles Kent greatly exerted himself in tho matter. Miss Kelly, who is still happily in possession of her faculties, enjoyed for SG years a wide celebrity in her profession. Daring that period she was associated on the boards of Drury Lane and Covent theatres (as well as on those of the Ilaymarket and the English opera house) with Mrs. Siddons, John Kem ble, Edmund Kcan, Muuden, Mrs. Jordan and other distinguished contem poraries. It is curious to remember that she made her first appearance before the public so far back as the last century, namely, in the December of 1799, when, as a little sprite of nine, she stepped on to the stace of Drury Lane in her uncle Michael Kelly's opera of "Blue Beard," marching in tho children's perspective pro cession, turban on head and scimitar in hand, among the retainers of tho boy Blue Beard. Tho representative of this character, throned that night in a minia ture howdah on a baby elephant, was, fourteen years afterwards to take tho town by storm as Shylock and win tho iccogui tiouofpoMetilyai Edmund Kean. Miss Kellv was the oiigiual of " Baibaia 8 1" in tbo " Essays," of Eliza, and to her Charles Limb inscribad two of the mn.it "uooful of hib souuets. The Author or Home Sweet ilutno." The remains of John Howard Payne, which the philanthropist Coicorau is about to have removed toWashiugto:,wiil bo interred in a triangular piece of giouud in Oak Hill ccmcntcry, on tbo crest of a hill which blopcs down into the valloy of Iiock creek. Tho spot is now inaikcd by a magnificent black beech, two and a half feet iu diameter, tho mofrt beautiful tree in tho cemetery. Tho surrounding evergreens will bo removed, leaving tho beech Jo stand in solitary grandeur on the hill top. There will bo no florid (itapli upon tho monument. Simplicity will li its finest ornament. Ic will be a plain bhaft, bearing only tho inscription : John Howard l'.iyuc, author ot " itomc Swrit Homo," born July 9. 1792, died April 10, 1832. r.AV City. Mich., Feb. 3, l!-SO.
