LANCASTER DAILY INTEiJiGJJSCEB, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5.1882. li a irastcv Intelligencer. r'ONDAY EVENING, DISC. S, is82. AN IB1FKOVKD CATTLE CAB. Transporting Live Stock Without Injury. The York I?at7y notices that S3 bead of fioo cattlo have arrived there from Cbi cir for William H. Miller. Sixteen lnail wero brought in Koblor's improved -itUe car. They left Chicago last Wed ncKdayatGp. in., boing nearly four days on the road. Each etecr bad a compart incut to itself, and could cither stand up or li down :.i it pleased without the least 'i.Hici 'if becoming injured, and where r w.s ocularly watered and fed with mi.vil (.in and oats during the transit ji tin; lusin. This, thefirsttrial of tliu improtX'il car, has proved a perfect success, thu uiaoliiucry for delivering the water and feed into the troughs working like a chaim. Upon the arrival of the train a number of persona were present ami w ero more than surprised at the fine condition of tho auimals. Their good condition demonstrates tho fact that cat tlo can bo comfortably transported in Ivohlcr's improved car. This car is of the ordinary stereotyped open woik pattern, 42 feet 8 inches long inside, 8 feet wide and G feet 2 inches high from the deck to the roof. Iusiilo the car in a falso deck which cm bo raised or lowered from the outside by means of cranks, thus making, when hoisted into place, a double deck car, each deck having a space three feet ouo inch high above it, and .suitable for the carrying of sheep, Jios or other small live stock. On top ol tiio roof, rnuuing lengthwise, are tho water tanks and feed bins, having a capacity icspcctivoly of 1150 gallons of wator and lorty-cight bushels of oats, a quan tity estimated as sufficient to feed a car load of live stock for a period of soven days, giving each animal thrco moals a lay of half a peck at a timo. Leading from tho wator tauk.i and feed bins are tubes which conduct tho food to cast iron feed boxes placed before each animal, and which, whou not in use, aro tumcu up right so as not to project into or beyond tho sides of tho car. Tho water tanks are ho constructed that-they cau bo packed with cork shaviugs to prevent tho water freezing in cold weather. This car is cal culated to accouiinodalo eighteen head and give each animal plculy ol stall room to lay down and rise up in, each being separated from tho other by stout canvas partitions, which, when not in use, or when tho car is turned into a double decker, are rolled up agaiust tho roof of the car by means of crauks opera ted from the outside : but, in case of an emergency, twenty-four head cau bo crowded into a single car. Built beneath tho platform of the car is a capacious box to be used for the purpose ot carry ing the crauks and tackle necessary to operate tho car. When tho car w turned into a double-decker, tkero are two rows of iron feed boxes, ono for each deck, both boing connected with the feed bins and water tanks by sepa rate tubas. Beside being used for stock purposes, tho car cau also bo utilized to carry freight of any kind with out any alteration or trouble To push tho interests of this invention a stock company has been formed by capi talists, under tho uamo of tho Koehler Improved Cattlo Car company, with heidquarters in Now York, tho officers being Hon. Chauucoy F. Black, of York, l'a., president, and E. D. Baxtou, of New Yoik, secietary and treasurer. Whether or not this iuvention will set t'o the much disputed question as to the best means for tho cai tying of beef, remains to be seen. Just at present public interest is centered on tho effort to introduce dressed Chicago beef on all tho Eastern markets, tho con troversy being as to whether tho beef is really lit for food after such transporta tion ; but that there is a vast field for im provement in tho present method of carrying live stock is a fact apparent to the most indifferent observer. Mice, ICtbblts, nnil Young Trees, ti'erur.intown Telegraph. In hard winters wheu there i:; a great deal of snow, which prevents mice and rabbits from gaining their usual living from tho uncovered earth, they become very destructive 'upon the bark of young fi nit trees. Wo havo known instances when tho whole orchards of young apple trees havo been moro or less damaged by these animals gnawing off the teuder bark aud thus seriously interfering with their growth, appearance and valuo. In re gard to mice, the remedy we see most gen erally suggested is tho stamping of snow firmly around tho trees, as tho mice, it is claimed, attack tho trees under, not above, the snow. This may or may not bo of advantage. But tho remedy wo offer is really a remedy, aud we doubt if anyone who has tried it properly has failed. It is simply to bandage up tho stems of tho tree with any cotton or woolen cloth, if of muslin with two or throo wrappings, let ting the baudage go into tho grouud an inch or two, aud six or eight inches abovo ground, aud tie up. This should bo re newed every autumn if necessary, until tho trees are largo enough not to be in jured. Those who aro in earnest for a remedy will try this aud savo their trses ; but it will bo too much trouble for others to devote a couplo of hours to this labor annually, and they will rather run tho risk with the mice. This method will keep out the borer also, as wo have stated upon several occa sions. Rabbits can gnaw, when tho stems aro small enough, two feet from tho ground, and would require tho bandage to be much higher. Tarring would help as a protection, but wo havo known in many cases tho simple bandage to bo all suffi cient, aud the tar to bo iujuriou-T to the trees. But tho best way to treat tabbits is to feed them. They never injuro trees except when suow covers the ground and tlioy havo nothing to livo on. For this purpose cabbage, turnips, apples or any vegetable offal will answer, and especially hay, of which tho rabbit is very fond. Let all who have occasion to do so try our sug gestion, and they may abuse us to their heart's content if it is not worth a couple of years' subscription. Hay Citv, Mich., Feb.::, usu.
