THE TOBACCO MAKKET.
TKAUK IN SKKU LEAF AM) HAVANA.
For the Week Endlnc Saturday December
2, lO A. M. The Over-Storked
Cigar Tra!e.
C S. Tobacco Journal.
Wo wcro uuablo to trace any other sales
tban about 1,200 cases of 1830 Pennsyl
vania. Tlio main buyers of it ffesc an ex
tensive uptown manufacturer and one or
two California manufacturers. The pi ices
realized were between 8 and 15 cents. If
reports are true socio of tbo sellers fcbed
tears wbile closing tbe contracts.
Tbo situation is extremely dreary. The
estimate is that tbo '80 and '81 tobacco
now on band number 350,000 cases. Tak
ing last year's borne consumption as a
guide, we use in this country 22-1,000
cases. Now, wbat witb tbe coming larjjo
importation of Sumatra aud the nlicbt
cbances for export of seed leaf, tbo out
look is. to say tbo least, bibly uncom
fortable. Sumatra Sales 180 bales. They wcro
merely " band to moutb" sales ; lowest
price, 90 cents ; highest, $1.40.
Havana Moderately active. Sales 400
bales, mostly in small lots to manufac
turer. Prices unchanged.
The Clear Trade's Inactivity.
Tbe sudden cessation of activity iu the
cigar trade is generally ascribed to tbo re
newed agitation of tbe tax question.
That, at any rate, is tho reason given by
most manufacturers wbo are asked regard
ing tbo condition of business.
Tbis reason, bowevcr, is only correct in
part. Many portions of tbo country are
actually overstocked witb cigars, wbicb
has more to do witb the present lalc of
trade than tbe tax question, though the
majority ofmanufactuioiB will not admit
such to bo the case. They have, for some
icasoii or other, an intense dislike to
acknowledging that it is possible to over
stock the country witb cigars, and it is
only occasionally that ono can bo found
who will openly avow that such can bo rn 1
isdono. Salesmen wbo bavoiecsnlly re
turned from very long trips coniebs,
though generally witb great reluctance,
that tho trado is overstocked.
As regards tho South, au additional
cause of tho dimuuition of business thcro
is the dilliculty experienced in making col
lections. Money comes in slowly from
that section, and there is no inclination to
extend credits even if parlies located
tlicic williug to purchase and iucica'c the
largo slocks already on band.
Tho same remarks apply equally as
.well to many parts of tho West. The
northwestern country, however, is an ex
ception. Tradc tboio is fairly active and
money seems to be plentiful.
As far as New York city is concerned,
theio can bo no disputo regarding tho
stagnation of trado. The internal revcuuo
icceipts (or November provo that conclu
sively and that tho bottom has indeed
fallen out of tbo long-extended "boom."
Tho drop in tbo receipts as coiupaicd with
( tatobor represents tho enormous number
of 12.081,000 cigars, and 1,939.000 les3
than in November, 18S1. Tho greatest
huileicrs are said to bo tho extremely
Luge manufacturer?, tbo small to medium
manufactuicrs continuing to do a fair if
not active trado. It is, then, no wonder
that most of tho former liavo reduced
tboir hours of labor about ono half. There
is no reason to believe that thcro will bo
any improvement iu business before Jan
uary 1. Indeed, tbo prospects are that
groat activity will not again prevail be
fore ppiiug.
Iiusiuess has aNo fallen olf in cigarettes
and manufactured tobacco in ibis city to
tho extent, according to tho tax receipts,
or 0,448,000 cigarettes and 117,09!! pouuds
of manufactuied tobacco, as compared
with October.
