IjANCASTEKfDA&Y INTJiLJAUJSNeER, SATURDAY; NOVEMBER 25.1882. ancaster Intelligencer. BA.TORDAYRVENINO. NOV. 25. 1B82. A M1H1STEK IN POLITICS. The Rev. T. A. Feraley Cbustd Wllh Slaaderlag m Candidate. The Kev. Thomas A. Fernley, a well known Methothist Episcopal minister in charge of a church, in Roxborongb, has got into Lot water. The gentleman dab bled in politieB in a quiet way, and it is charged that his efforts in aid of his friends were very efficacious. At the late election William G. Entreken, a photographer in Manayunk, was a candidate for select council, and was backed by the Indepen dent Republicans and Democrats against Colonel Charles Thomas Jones, the regular Republican. The Rev. Mr. Fernley espoused the cause of Col onel Jones, and whenever he met any of the members of his flock or neigh bors he dropped a quiet word into their ears. It is alleged that he related stories of how Mr. Entrekin abused bis family and indulged in excesses which would illy fit him to represent tho ward in the upper legislative branch of tho city government. The seed sown by the wayside grow stud showed that this stylo of campaigning was a good one. When tho returns were counted up after the election :t was fuuud that Colonel Jones was elected. Soon after this stories began to ieacb the car of tho defeated candidate which reflected seriously upon his character. lie traced their anthorKbip, it is claimed, to the Rev. Mr. Fernley, aud numerous persons volunteered to appear in court and tell all thoy know. Tho mat ter was placed in the hands of Counsellor P. A. Dever, who, after bearing some of the statements, decided that Mr. Entre kin had good cause for an action for slan der and defamation of character. Accord ingly an affidavit was prepared and a capias will be served upon Mr. Fernley in a civil suit for damages, and he will be arrested. "The desiro of my client is not to ob tain money," said Attorney Dover, " but to bavo tho matter brought iuto court so that his character may bo cleared of tlieso stains which tho reverend gentleman has cast upon it. Mr. Eutrekiu has beeu en gaged in business for thirty years, and this is the first time a wrongdoing has been charged to him." Tho Rev. T. A. Fernley is one of the best known of the Methodist ministers in the city. He has filled pulpits all over Philadelphia and vicinity, and is a promi nent man at tho Monday meetings. Ho is naturally aggressive, aud an untiring worker when he enters into a contest. Great interest will attach to the case because of the prominence of the preacher. Delevan, Wis., Sep. 24, 1S7S. MYSTERIOUS Articles with High Sounding, track-law Names arc Net a Success. To Plain English. Every reader of newspapers lias observed time, and again. In the advertising columns, maiy singular and frequently:unprononnca blc names of medicinal remedies. The Greek end Latin languages especially have been dnewn upon to inrnlsh names by which pat ent medicines could bo Introduced to the public. The inference is, in many cases at least, that the proprietors depend more upon the attraction of high sounding titles than upon the essential merits ot the remedies themselves. It Is refreshing once in a wbilo to find a medicino advertised, whose simple intelligi ble natno in English at once conveys to Hie reader an understanding of the uses and pur poses of the remedy. A notable Instance ot this kind la found in the medicines ot Dr. C. W.
