Some very intereisiiu:: ami importaut ex periments with diamonds have lately been made at the Paris Academy of Sciences. An experienced diamond merchant bought not loug ago, a line white diamond for 4,G00. One morning he gave it a good washing with soap and water, when what was bis consternation to And that it had turned yellow, which cent its value down to $S00 The matter was brought to tho attention ot the academy, and experts submitted a leport, which showed that diamond whitening is a fraud easy to ac complish and as easy to detect. By plunging a yellow diamond into an aniline violet dye it becomes white, while at the same time it loses neither its transparency nor brilliancy. In fact, on making the ex periment, the experts had ina few minutes transformed several yellow stones into what appeared uiagniticent white stones of fivefold value. Take a yellow diamond dip it even into no stronger dye than vio- let ink, wash it with water to remove any discoloration, and the effect is immediate. Tho dried diamond remains whito. But, ou tho other hand, the illusion is of short duration. Rub tho stone even Iigbly and tho yellow tint is sccu coming bick again, and a littlo further attrition with the linger restores tho pristine hue complete ly. This discovery may entail upon mauy persons a rude awakening to the fact that the stones they have are of far less value than they supposed, and will necessitate oven greater care than that hitherto ex ercised in purchasing. Douglas Jerrold ouce raised the question whether any pos session really repaid its possessor which entailed anxiety of mind, and diamonds, in one way or another, entail so much that there aro mauy to whom tho great value 6et upon them becomes almost in comprehensible.
