jTfei rifpHntae&? !..;IIHi.iHim.iij,ajT r 5 LANCASTER DAnYINTEi.riUJfiJSCEB, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23.1882. teT 1 l s FAM AND HOUSEHOLD. NOTES rUKIUE ACTUHS MOUTH. lropecta for Corn Economy ouilhe Farm Winter Flower In the Window and How They Grow. Gerinantown Telegraph. According to the estimate of the depart ment of agriculture tbo crop of Indian coru iu the republic this year will average close to twenty-flvo bushels per acre, which is under a medium yield. The ag gregate crop is given at one billion six hundred and eighty millions of bushels. These statements, which are from official sources, are compiled from the reports and estimates of reliable correspondents of the department all ever the country, and will serve perhaps insomo degree to explain the speculative advance in the prices of grain at Chicago and other Western crain ,inarkets somo time since. The corn crop is in all respects by far the greatest and most thoroughly national of all the agri cultural products of the country. Indian oorn is raised in every stato and territory. However varied iu soil or climate may be theso sections of the country, all alike are equally capablo of being successfully i.ejwl fn t-fin Miltivfifinri nf "Indian onm If, therefore, the foreign markets were as I much in need of Indian corn as wheat, American commerce could supply that demand to an unlimited extent. As it is, however, only a small fraction of all this great product is exported to foreign countries, all the rest being consumed at home. Of courso, wheat bread is always a staple article of food in tho cities and towns of all parts of tho country; but in tho vaHt interior, especially in tho South and West, corn meal takes tho place of wheat flour as the malu article of bread ; but as a general product of value corn is the most important of tho earth, and is used for more goncial purposes for la.in and beast than that of any other. Economy on the Farm. On the farm, and in all tho various tic tails of rural and domestic life, prudence and a just economy of time and means aro . incumbent in an eminent degree Tho earth itself is composed of atoms, and in tho most gigantic fortunes consist of ag gregated items, insignificant iu themselves individually considered, but majestic when contemplated in unity and 'as a whole. In the mauagetuant of a farm, all needless expenditure should be systemati cally avoided, and tho income made to ex ceed the outlay as far as possible. Pecu niary embarrassment should always bo regarded as a contingency of evil bodiii.', and if contended against with energy and persevering fortitude, it must soon be overcome. Dobt, with but little hope of its removal, is a millstone dragging us down and crushing the life-blood out of us. Be careful, therefore, iu incurring any pecuniary responsibility which doe.-; not present a clear delivercnce with the advantages which a wise use of it ought always to insure. A farmer who purchases a good farm and can pay down one-third of the price, give a mortgage for the other two-thirds, and possesses the heart and resolution to work it faithfully and well, enters upon the true path to success. He will labor with tho encouragiug knowledge that each day's exertions will lessen his indebted ness and bring him nearer to tho gaol when ho shall be disenthralled and becomes a freeholder in its most cheering sense. But without due economy in every depart ment, iu the dwelling as well as in tho barns and iu the Holds, this gratifying achievement may not be reached until lato in life, or may bo indclinilely postponed. A prudent oversight, theiefoie, over all the operations of the farm, in order that everything may be done that ought to be douo and nothing bo wasted, will exert a powerful influence in placing a family on tho high road to an eariy independence. Wluter Flowers in tlio Window. The man or woman who dislikes to sec even a single pot or stand of plants or flowers in the window when they cau no longer bo giown out-of-doors, we would not care to bo acquainted with. When we see these thoughtful, raodc&t efforts to please the eye of tha passers-by, wo in voluntarily accord to that household not only our good wishes, but a due sharo of natural accomplishment that it did not even dieim of evoking. While city people should not omit adorning their front winds in this way, we think that couutry people beyond all others can mako their homes beautiful at small expense in buch adornments, and would suggest that tho material for this cheap and beautiful ar rangement is particularly abundant at. this time of tho year. Tiiero aro not ouly living plants in pots for the window sill, but colored leaves, dried ferns and grasses, and skeletonized plants, out of which innumerable taste ful objects may be made. But among the cheapest and most interesting of these room and window adornments is the hanging-plants, which may bo suspended from hooks and brackets, and by which tho wholo window cau be niado to look like a summer scene in the woods, although wo aro in the midst of winter. Iu tho closely built cities some such window-gardening attempts are made, but are generally, with rare, beautiful exceptions, utter failures. Somo highly ornamental China work, or somo highly painted or polished "rustic" bosket, is employed to hold tho plants, but always evidently to tho plant's misery. Plants do not seem to admiro theso elabo rate preparations for them. They seem to understand that with them they ouly oc cur? a very inferior position in tho temple of honor, and hence there is no wonder they fade away ana die. lu most ot our country homes we find them in common pote, shells, stumps, boxes or anything that can be improvised, and always with success,' We remember that at our great Centen nial exposition an oxhibitor mado for hangiug-plants purposes tho husk of the cocoanut, and we noticed and ascertained in fact that plants thrived wonderfully in this to us uniquo arrangement. It re minded us of what we had often read in tho English horticultural periodicals, that cocoanut rcfuso is an excellent material for the growth of plants. Wo aro all familiar with tho cocoanut, but all do not know that the nut is enclosed in a heavy, sponpy covering or husk of an inch or more iu thickness. These husks are cut across in the middle and make two little baskets, and can be easily suspended with wire. As we have already said, there is a great fer tility power in this covering, aud there is the basket at the same time, thus secur ing two desible things whero only one to most people was apparent. Many beautiful plants and flowers can be had all tho winter through in this way at very little cost in time or money at least, so little as not to bo worth mention ing with the pleasure and satisfaction af forded to all, aliko to those who provide these most desirable natural ornaments and the obliged public who cordially wel come the heartfelt treat as they pass along. Now, too, is tho time, and none to spare, when the preparations should bo made about securing them. Dklbvan, Wis., Sep. 24, 1S7S. Gents IJiavo taken not quite one bottle oi tlio Hop Bitters.
