Night in St. Louis. Seated in the parlor of her father's magnificent residence, Lurlice Looschair allowed her taper fingers to wander idly over the keys of the pir.no. and, obedient to her delicate touch, thcro Moated forth upon the air the strains of that beautiful miserere, " Since Papa Tore His Pants.' And as she sat there, absorbed in the sad reflections to which the music gavo rise, the door opaned softly and Berwyck He therington entered the room. Lurlinc, all the senses of her passionate nature ab sorbed in tho music, continued to play, not knowing that the man she loved, and to win whose pocketbook in return she would havo hustled around wish dread earnestness, was standing by her side. But at last Berwyck placed his hand gently on her shoulder, and by that in definable sense that tells us of a human presence, although wo sec it not, she knew that somebody was around. Turn ing quickly she saw Mr. lletherington. "I did not know you were here," she Raid, a blush flooding the face that such c little tirao ago was pale aad calm, "or I should not havo played so confidently." " Ohh you not favor mo with something more?" he said. The blush grows deeper and more vivid now and the drooping eyes ar moist, with tears. But in an instant she recovers he-sslf-posMMsion, aud Jook3 at him in the frank, honest way in which Cincinnati girls ask for more pie. "I cannot play any other piece," sho says, half sadly, half defiantly. " Are yoii sure of this, Lurline ?" Ber wyck asks, bending over her in a loving way. " Think well before you speak," he continues, " for on your answer nssy de pend the future happiness of tro young JiTM." " I am quite sun," sho says. " Then you must be my wife." And as he speaks these words Beiwick Hether ington's faoe lights up with a rapturous, Schuyler Colfax smile. " Do you love raoV" ha asks. For answer, she put her arms around his neck, kisses him coldly behind tho left car, and then a great falls upon them. Presently Berwick rises to go " You will come again to-morrow evening ?" she asks. "Yes," he replies, " von may tio the dog at 8." " And you will not regret your choice?" " Never," ho says, in clear, steady tones. " I have spent tho best years of my life looking for a girl who could play only one tune on the piano." ' m KATTLikaNAtiKS AS PETS. A Jefferson County Man Playing with Kep tllna at thn Zoo. "UattWnafen Joe." otherwise .Tosenh Hoffman, the snake charmer, from Jeffer " - i son countv. whose feats in handling poi- Eonous reptiles have Rained him a wide . - . . reputation, was a frequent visitor to the Philadelphia Zoological Garden last week. He came to the city with a number of rat tlesnakes, which he contributed to tho col lection now in the garden. The reptiles retained their poisonous fangs, hut this did not prevent Joe from lifting the snakes out of their cages and coiling them about his neck and shoulders like hempen ropes. The charmer places no reliance in satety by removing a serpent's fangs. Ho says that they grow again in a week's time, aud are as dangerous as before. Hoffman is accustomed to handling snakes just from the mountains withreck 1633 freedom. Ho is not afraid to approach the fiercest rattlers that haunt the wilder ness and to seize the reptiles by the neck. Indeed, whenever he wants any specimens Hoffman goes to the mountains, bag in hand, and, cautiously approaching the crevices where the snakes bask in the sun so as not to disturb them, he deftly grasps the serpent by the neck and pats it into tho bag. He says that- he uses no piecau tions, finding that coolness and a steady nerve arc all that is required to conquer a serpent. He has been accompanied on tbeso collecting trips by hi brothers and a neighbor, all of whom possess the requisite coolness and steadiness for engaging in the capture with comparative safety. Hoffman disclaims using any charms to conquer snakes. He does not believe the so-called charmers use mesmeric power to influence t lie snakes they handle, declating that for himself he has only found it necessary to handle tho reptiles with extreme careful ness, so as not to arouse their anger. Hoff man has been 'accustomed to play with rattlesnakes for several years past, and has not yet suffered any accident. Ho admits that it is very dangerous sport, and may yet cause his death. He has found it quite profitable to exhibit these raptiles, noted for thodeadlinoss of their venom, at couury faint and other gatherings, aiways toying ' with them in the most familiar mannor, Dxlsvai., Wis., Sep.
