LANCASTER DAILY INTElJLlttBNCER, WEDNESDAY, NQVEMBEK 15. 1882. Lancaster Intelligencer. "WEDNESDAY BVKNLNO, NOV. 15. 1882. THE CLOWN'S BABY. It was oat on the Western frontier. The miners, rugged and brown. Were gathered around the posters r The circus had come to town ! Tin: great tent shone In the darkness, Mice a wonderful palace ol light, And'rough men crowded tho entrance , Shows didn't come every night ! Not a woman's lace among them , Many a face that was bad. And some that were only vacant, And some that were very sad. And behind a canvass curtain, In a corner of the place, The clown, with challc and vermlllion. Was making up his face. A weary-looking woman. With a smile that still was sweet, Pawed on a little garment, With a cradle at her te'et. rantaloons stood ready and waiting. It was time lor the going on ; JSul tho clown In vain searched wildly The " property baby " was gone. He murmured, impatiently hunting, "It's strange that I caunot find There ! I've looked in every corner ; It must have been left behind !" The miners were stamping and fihoutlng, They were not patient men ; Tho clown bent over the cradle " 1 must taka you, little lien !" The mother started and shivered. But trouble and waut were near : .She lilted her baby gently ; You'll bo veiy careful, dear !" " Cai etui ! You toollsh ilarling " How tenderly it was said ! What a Hinllc shone thiougU the chalt and paint 1 love each hair ol his head l" The noise rose into an uproar, Misrule lor the time was king ! Tho clown, with a looliah chuckle, Itoltcd Into tlie ring. But as, with a squeak and nourish. The Addles closed their tune, You'll hold him as 11 ho was made ol glass!" Said the clown to Pantaloon. The jovial fellow nodded ; " I've a couple myself," he said, " 1 know how to handle 'tEi. bless yon ! Old fellow, go ahead !' The lun grow last and furious. And not one of all the crowd Had gueswl that the baby was alive. When he suddenly laughed aloud. On, that baby laugh ! it was echoed From the benches with a ring. And the roughest customer there sprang up With " Roys, It's the real thing !" The ling was iamnicd In a minute, Not a man that did notstiivc For a "shot at holding the baby,' Tho baby that was "alive !" He wis thronged by kncelingsu'.tors In the midst ol tho dusty ring. And he held his court right royally. The fair little baby king ; Till one ofthe shouting courtiers, A man with a bold, hard face, The talk, for miles of the country. And the terror of the place. Raised the little king to his shoulder. And chuckled. ' Look at that !" As the chubby lingers clutched hi-lmii Then, " Boys, hand round tiie hnt !" There never was such a iiattul Ot silver and gold and notes ; People are not always penniless Because they don't wear coats ! And then, "Three cheers inr the baby !' 1 tc 11 you those cheers wore meant, Ana the way in which they weie given Was enough to raise the tent. And then there was sudden silence, Anil a gruff old minor said, " Come, boys, enough of this rumpus : It'H timo it was put to bed." So, looking a little sheepish. But with faces strangely bright, Tho audience, tomewhat linguiing, Flocked out Into the night. And the bold faced leader chuckled, " He wasn't a bit uf raid ; He's as game as he Is good looking ; Boys, that wa9 a show that paid '." Margaret Vandegrit In St. Xicholas. fAEM AND GAKDEN. rail Notes tor Uio Husbandmen. Ucrmontown Telegraph. The season is at hand when wo should a-ain say that all farmers know the valao nfmiTOk" and how to urcparo it. Many farmers manufacture hundreds of loads of tho best manure in this way. Thev rather together on tho premises forest-leaves, cornstalks, including tho mnin -b-pp.cIr. vines, offal from fence- corners, muck from ponds and ditches, occasional sprinklings of limo through the moss, layers of barnyard manure, and thur, build up oblong squares and let thom re main over winter. When April arrives the mass has Ror.e through fermentation and comminution and prcsonls a mound of fertilizing matter bettor than a small gold mine would be to the proprietor of the farm. But wo want to seo these compost heaps iu tho garden, and there is no rea son why thoy should not bo thero as well as upon tho farm. Thero is rubbish ,t, n ti.o frnnlcn. with the assistance of leaves, some mould from tho woods, if attainable; if not, irom portions of the promises where itcau bo spared ; sorap iugfi from tho turnpike, manuro from the stable, and every attainable substance that will decay tnrougn tuo wiuii. . littlo slacked limo will bo a good assis tance. A half-dozen loads of excellent manure will be manufactured by the timo it is wanted "n tho spring, without tncur ring a cent of actual expense, and at the same time the garden will be cleared of its vinos, stalks, woeds, and all otherwiso worthless trash. Vleiui Cider Itarrcls. Cider makiDg is now close at hand, and the barrels must have become very musty and mouldy and wholly unfit to uso with out a thorough fumigation. A scientific journal gives the following receipt for effecting this, which we hope may do : " To clean cider barrels, pour in limo water, and then insert a trace-chain through tho bunghole, remembering to fasten a strong cord on the chain so an to pull it oat again. Shake the barrel until all tho mould iusido is rubbed off. Hi use with water, and finally pour in a little whiskey." This is simplo enough and would seem to meet tho requirements, lleally fine oider cannot be expected when tho battels are not perfectly sweet and clean. But if any of our cider makers have a better or other methods than this, we shall be pleased to have thom ; and to bo of use this" season they should be communicated at 0046. Hrmndied Peaches or Plums. Gather peaches before they are quite ripe, prick them with a large needle and rob off the down with a piece of flannel ; put them into a preserving pan with cold water enough to cover them, and let the water become gradually scalding hot. If the water does more than simmer very gently, or If the fire be fierce, the fruit will be likely to crack. When they are tender lift them carefully out and fold thom in 'flannel, or a soft table-cloth, in several folds, llavo ready a quart or more, as the peaches require, of the best white brandy, and dissolve ten ounces of powdered sugar in it. When tho peaches are cold put them into a class jar, and pour the brandy and sugar over them. Cover with leather and a bladder. Apri cots and plums can bo done iu the same wayj m m .
