At a fire Wednesday morning at 243 and 245 Pearl streot, New York, one man lost hU life aad another was seriously in jured. At about 10 o'clock, as ten men were working in the basement of No. 243 Pearl street, they noticed a flash of light dart along the electric light wire of the Edison company, and in an instant some Tarnish, which was near the place, ex ploded. The burning fluid was scattered everywhere Some of it fell on John Brown, of No. 148 Chery street, and he was soon enveloped in flames. lie, with the others, rushed to the stairway leading up to Cliff street. When be reached the walk. Brown cried out : " Oh, God J I'm burning up." A truckman who was near by threw a horse blanket around him. The iniured man was theu taken to a neighboring store and from there to the Chambers street hospital. Ilis left leg was badly burned. While those in the basement wcro ileo inct for their lives those in the store of Messrs. Ilsley & Doubloday, who had also heard the noise of the explosion, had made their way to the street and Sir. Doubleday gave tho alarm. Ilis nephew, Frank Doubleday, residing in Harlem, however, made his way back again, to go to the safe, it is supposed. He, however, never camo out alive, for before he reached the safe ho was overpowered by the dense volumes of smoke and suffocated. After the fire was extinguished his body was lound near the door on tho Cliff street side. The building, which was partially destroyed by fire, is a double live story structure and extends through to Nos. 18 aud 20 Cliff stree. The ground floor and basement of No. 243 Pcatl street wa.3 occu pied by Messrs. Ilsley & Doubleday, deal ers in paints, oils and varnish, who lose $20,000. The ground floor of No. 243 was tenan ted by Messrs. William Eggert & Co., tobacco dealers, who sustained a damage oi $10,000. Tho other losses, by fire, smoke and water, are distributed as fol io vh : On tho second floor Mr. Lewis C. Glover, twino andcordago, $3,000 and tho Pennsylvania iron works, $1,000 ; the third floor, tho Now York elbow company, $1,000, and Mr. Charles Brombache, tin men's tools, $1,000 ; forth floor, the Pho to clcctrotypo company, $2,000, aud the Empiro lithographic aud engraving com pany, $1,000 ; filth floor, Mr. Charles M. Cornwall, printer, $300, and Messrs. Stilwill & Albertson, printers, $300. All the losses aro covered by insurances. Wednesday morning shortly after half past two o'clock, Cornelius Curtin, aged 2-5 years, while intoxicated, fell into a bonfire- on Avenue D, near Ninth street, Now York. I lo had been electioneering d uri ng ;ua day. Ho was returning to his homo, at No. 522 East Thirteen street, whon tho accident occurrred. As ho approached Niuth street, near Aveuuu D, ho com menced to cheer for Cleveland aud ran toward a largo fire that was burning on the street. Several men who wcro look ing at him walked to tho middlo of tho street to prevent him from falling, but before they reached him he fell into the flames. Ho was taken out and removed to :v drug store in tho neighborhood where his injuries '.toio dressed and an anibu lanca was .summoned.
