Centre Square, in front of tho in'telli .ousenn building, was the rallyii.g point ;.f the Democrats and before eight o'clock an eager, impatient throng had, gathered ere anxious for a morsel of good news. Tln-v wcro not, however, kept Ions in sns p use. The Kcpublicau strongholds of tin- city were the firstto report, and their I.ij-cly i educed majorities gave ample evi dincc or how the tide was tunning. And when the banner Democratic wards were hcatd from with handsome majorities for u-lorm, the crowd greeted tho announce ments with deafeuiug applause. As the icturus came they wcro rapidly put upon the scioi)ticon in front of the Intkli.igex cku building for tbc bcnclit of tho impatient assemblage. Cheer after cheer followed each succcthivo announcement of the glad tidings or a Democratic wave, and when Nov York's magnificent major ity was thrown upon tho screen it was erected with a wild teinpest!of applauso. Tho tardiness or tho returns from Phila delphia and Allegheny counties in hpited dread for a time and kepi the crowd in an agony of suspense ; but when the news of the immense fall off in tho Republican voto was reported in these two Gibeniltcrs of Republicanism, tho ciowd could scarcely contain itself for joy. Andjwheu it was evident tht Pat tison had been elected by 30,000 plurality, the long pent-up spirit of enthusiasm, gaining new strength under tho re membrance of Democratic defeat in tho past, broke forth in a perfect whirl wind of approbation. Old; and young lifted up their voices together in testi mony of their appreciation of the famous victory won. A bon-firo was lighted and its ruddy glare was reflected upon a crowd shouting itself nearly hoarse. Long after midnight, when all the indications pointed to a sweeping Democratic victory, tho en thusiastic crowd secured the City band, and, headed by ir, swept up North Queen street, shouting and gesticulating liko madmen. It was an event in the history of the Democracy, which shall live while human memory lasls. And the fact that tho victory was a long time in coming, gives it an intensified appreciation.
