LANCASTER DAILY I NTEjLjLlGENCEI. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1882. V Hanrastcr ntelligrmrr. WFDNBSCAY EVENING. OCT. 25, 1B3: AttUclal Incubatlnn. New York Time. There is not the slightest reason to be lieve that when the ancient, Egyptians in verted a method of artificially hatching cgjrs they were influenced by any desire to lessen the labor of hens. Their sole object ras to produce more chickens than the hens produced. Although we may give a setting hen credit for the beet possible intentions, it must be admitted that she h a very clumsy bird. She vill tread on her ejrjrs and will leave more or Jess of them out in the cold. Betides, her capacity to hatch eggs is limited by her size. There aie very fcv. hens who can hatch out more than a dozen chickens, and, of course, if a man wishes to raise chicken.- on a large scale bo must supply himbeif with an im incuse numocr of hens. Artificial incuba- J tion obviates all these difficulties. As in vented by the Egyptians, and extensively practiced in our own day, a thousand eggs can bo hatched at ouo tirao iu a single in cubator, and not one of these runs any lisk of being broken or chilled. The immense success which has attend ed the artificial incubation of chickens in France recently attracted the attention of Dr. Tavernier, a learned and ingenious physician. He was attached to a hospital lor foundlings, and althongh the position gave him an admitable opportunity for experimenting with new medicines, he was a hnmsiic man, and he wa atinojctt at tho Uro number of foundlings who died within tho first six months of theli life. The majority of those admitted to the hospital were weak and sickly, but in that respect they did not differ from tho majority of all sorts of French infants. Dr. Tavernier felt that it was a reproach to medical scienoe that French infants-. could not be cultivated with as much suc cess as French chickens, and he resolved to try what artiUcial incubation it it may be so called would ncoomplish if applied t) infants. The doctor coustiuctedachild incubator on precisely tho model of tho ordinal y chicken incubator. It was a box covered with a glass tide furnished with a soft woolen bed aril kept at the temperature of 80 Fahrenheit by the aid of hot water. He selected as the subject of his first ex periment a miserably made infant, one, iu fact, that had rashlv insisted upon bo ginning the world at an injudiciously early peiiod. This iufr.iit was placod in tho in cubator, provided with a nursing bottle, and kept in a dark room. To tho sur prise of the doctor it ceased to cry on the second day after it was placed in the in cubator. and although it had been a pro ternaturally sleepless child, it sank into a deea and quiet sleep. The child ieinaiud in tho incubator for about eight weeks, during which time it never once cried, and never lemained awake except while taking nourishment. It grew rapidly, and whou, at the expiration of sixty days, it was re moved from theiucubator it presented the appearance of a healthy infant of at least a year old. Delighted with the success of this ox periment, Dr. Tavernier next selected au ordinal y six months-old infant addicted to the usual pins and colic and exhibiting the usual fiet'uiucso of French infants. Th:e clii'd conducted iwlf while iu tho incubator precisely as its predecessor had done. It never ci ied ; it ."-pent its whole time in sleep, and it grew as if it had made up its mind to embrace the caiet. of a professional giant. After a six weeks' stay in the incubator it was removed and weighed. During tliis brief peiiod it had donbhd its weigni. It had become so btrong and healthy th.it it resembled a child ot thiee yeais do, and it ei aid act ually walk when holding 0:1 to a conve nient piece of furuituro. These two experiments satisfied Dr. Ta vernier of the vast advantages of artificial child incubation. He immediately pro ceeded with the permission of the :.;i thoritiesof the hospital to const met an incubator cf the capacity of four hundud infants, and in this "he placed cvoryono of the three hundred and sixty it fjafs who were in the hospital on the 10th day of February last. With tho reception of ono v.ho died of congenita! hydrocephalus and another who as claimed by its repentant ps rents, the infants weie kept continrotiMy in the incubator for nix months, when they were leinovcd in uausequeucc of having outgrown their narrow brdb. Tho re.-ul will bOfin almost iuci edible to pcisons who are unfamiliar with the reputation of Dr. Tavernier, and have not seen tho repot r made toffee French government on the sub ject by a sL"!t committee of twelve. The average age of tho hifaui.. l.jt Fbruat was 15 in iths autt 8 dayt the younger being less that 12 hours old and tV- eldest not more th?n 11 months. Their average weight was 1G poinds, only 1 of the en tin SCO having attained u. weight of S3 pounds. At the end of six months of artificial in cubation tho average weight of each infant was 84 pounds, and there was not one who would not have been supposed by a casual abserver to be at least eight years old. In other words, six months of artificial incubation did as much in the way of de veloping Dr. Tavcrnicr's foundlings as eight years of ordinary life would have done. Tho infants were Htr-n and healthy, :ia well as big ; they walked within a week after leaving the incubator, and most of them havo since learned to talk. These results surpassed Dr. Taver nier's mo.tt enthusiastic expectations, and there can be no doubt that h'13 systom of artificial child incubation will be adopted not only in every child's hospital in France, but in every private family throughout the civilized woild.
