LANCASTER DAILY INTtilJkieENCEK MONDAY, OCTOBER 23, 188Z. HER MOTHER'S SECRET. BY MBS. BOCTHWOBTM. AetUer ol Tbe Blades Hand," Tbe Un loved Wife," to., Ktc., Ktc. CUAHTER 1. THE MBTHSSS OF JfOXDREKB. There Is a wouna within bea-'tls a wound That lies too deep lor tears ; and many a while hen all that la aronnd her soems to smile. Within lier licart ot heart a JJ)1- "Mother! Ob, mother! it will break niy heart !" wailed Odalite, sinking at the lady's feet, and dropping her head into her bands, face downward to the car net. The lady gently raised her child, took her in her arms and tenderly caressed her murmuring softly : 7tf. mv own ! hearts never break, or nnr. heart. I know, must haTO broken long ago. Besides," she added, in a firmer tone" Honor must be saved, though hearts be sacrificed." " 'Honor, mother, dear ? I do not un derstand. I do not see what honor has to do With it. Or, if it has, I should think that honor would be better saved ty my keeping faith with Le than by hi caking with him ! Oh, mother ! mother ! It will kill me !" moaned (Halite. My child, my dear girl, hear mc ! lis- tem to reason ! Leonidas Force has no ' claim to be semembered by n. You have never been engaged to mm. ion were but a little girl of thirteen wlicu be went to sea on his first voyage three years ago and you lave not seen him siuce. WLat possible claim can he have upon you, bince no betrothal i-xists between you ?" gently questioned the lady, tenderly running her tair fingers through the dark tresses of the young head that leaned upon her bosom. " Oh, mother," replied the girl, with a heavy sigh, " I know that there was no formal betrothal between Le and myself huhhut we all knew, vou and father and Leand 1aU knew and always knew that we two belonged to each other and would alwayt belong to each other all our lives. Le and I never thought of any other fate." " Idle, childish fancies, my poor little girl ! too trivial to causo you these tears. Wipe them away, and look clearly at the higher destiny more worthy of your b'nth and beauty," murmured tlio lady pressing her ripe, red lips upon the pale brow of her darling. . ' Oh, mother, I do not want a higher destiny ! I do not want any destiny apart from Le. And these are not childish lau ciea. and not trivial to me ! Oh, think, mother, Le and I were playmates as far back in my life as I can remember. We loved each other better than we loved any one clso in the world. You and father used to laugh at us and pretend to be jealous ; but we taw that you were pleased all the time ; for you both intended us for each other, and we knew it, too, for father used to say when he saw how in separable we two were : ' So much tLe better : I hope their hearts will not be es tranged when they grow up !' And our hearts have neier become estranged from each other '." ' Ob, yes, dearest, I know that there was some speculative talk when you were children of uniting you and Leonidas, so that tho name of Force might not dio oat from Mondreer. But I never jeally ap proved f marrying cousins, Odalite, meiely to keep the family name on the family estate." "But, mother, darling, Le and I never thought of the family name and estate ; we onlv thought cf one another. And, besides, we are such very, very distant cousins only fourth or fifth, I think that that objection could never be raised. Ob, mother ! dear mother ! do not com pel me to break with Le ! I can not ! I em not! Oh. indeed. I cannot!" she -.hall be most secure from all iaterruptiok. I will tell you of a fatal episode in my own youth, when I was younger even than you are now. Oh, that I should have to tell such a tale to my daughter ! But, Odalite, when- you have heard it you will learn just what you have to do in order to save us all, and especially to save your noble, generous, honorable father from ruin and digraco. And then, Odal ite, when you have learned all, you. shall do exactly as you pleatse. Not one word of coercion, not another word of persua sion will I utter. I will leave our fate in your hands, and you shall be absolutely free to act. Come with me cow." She took her daughter's arm and they arose from the sofa. For a moment they stood, quite acci dentally, facing a tall mirror between two windows on the opposite side of the room, and that mirror for the moment reflected two beautiful forms, of which it would be difficult to decide which should near on the palm for beauty. The elder lady, Elfrida Force wite of Abel Force, the owner of Mondreer, one of the finest old places on the western shore of Maryland was a tall, stately blonde, with a superbly rounded form, a rich comp'exion, and an afiiuence of golden brown hair, rippling all over her lino head and gathered into a mass at the nape of her graceful ceok. She wore an inexpen sive, closely fitting dress of dark blue serge, whose vry plainness set ofi'tho per fection of her ligure ana cnuanceu iu brilliancy of Ler complexion, showing to the best advautago that splendid beauty, which at tho age of thhty-five had readied its zenith. Just now, however, tho vivid brightness of her bloom had faded to a pate lose tint, and her lovely blue eyes seemed heavy with unshed tears. Her young daughter, Odalite, equally beautiful in her way, was yet of an en tirely opposite type. She was of medium height, and her form, though well rounded, slender almost to fragility. Her head was small, and covered with a fine suit of rippling jet black bair, whioh she wore caielessly, partly in a blaok net, partly es caping down the shonlders. Her eyes and eyebrows were black as jet ; her lectures weie delicate and regular ; and her com plexion was of a clear ivory white. She wore a crimson merino dress, plainly made, closely fitting, and rolievod only by nar row whito rulltes at throat and wrists. Only for a moment they paused, and then they walked cut of the room, ana the pretty picture disappeared. They went to Odalite's chamber, where, in privacy, the proud lady could tell the daughter lli:n Mother's Secret a secret so terrible that she believed it would compel the poor girl to give up her young dream ot happiness with her chosen lover, Leoni das Force, whom she idolized, and accept a life of misery as the wife of Colonel Angus Anglesea, a heartless adventurer, whom she loathed. " But Le's heart has not changed, nor has mine." "My poor darling'" said Elfrida Force, smoothing her daughter's dark hair with a gentle hand, "my precious child ! It grieves mc to do so, but I must prepare you for what seems inovitablo. You must forget all this youthful folly and think of Leonidas Force only as a cousin. You do not really love him as a betrothed maiden should love her affianced husband. You only fancy that you do. In reality you know nothing of such a love as that. Le was brought up in the house with you. You have no brother. Le has uo sister. You therefore love each other as brother and sister. Come to iny heart again, and calm your excitement," said the lady holding out her arms. 1 And the young girl fell weeping ufon the bosom of her mother. The lady allowed some lime to pass1 in which .the girl's paroxysm of tears ex hausted itself, and then caressing, her ' gently, she began in a soothing tone : " My preoMMU child, do you doubt ypur mother's lore or truth?" ; , "Oh, bo, no, no !
