3 ? LANCASTER DATLY IHTEiJLi&IER FRIDAY; OCTOBER 20, 18825. fcancastn: .Intelligencer. FRIDAY EVENING, OCT. SO. 1882, THE FRENCH MUSICAL CRITIC. A. Uniqae Speelsam Who Bu Bince Had Some LM Famous Imitator. Temple Bar. There was for many years a journalist in PariH who' made no secrets that he was paid for his' articles, and who dealt very hardly with those who refused to pay, and he wrote against Each artists as Duprez and Alboni for no other reason, until Duprez brought a suit against him for libel. Hewore he would put the most prominent feature of Mmc. Alboni into his feuitletonit shodidnot pay him, and he did. This is what he wrote : " Mme. Alboni is an immense artist ' ' (she always was, even at the age of sixteen, very fat), " nobody can deny it But how does she not seem to know that she must avoid disguising herself in man's costume, un less she really means to render her self ridiculous ? When she appeared as Haffio Orsini, every seam of her dress cracked, the bell had given in its resigna tion, and the oloak, too short, covered but the smaller half of this strange spectacle. (Le manteau trop court, ne couvrait que la moite de cet etrange, apeotacle.") Onoe this critio told me, and, of course, told everybody, that Meyerbeer owed him 3000 francs. " And, pray, for what ?" I asked, suspecting that he alluded to-a debt for bis articles, and curious to see whether be would have the oynicism to frankly admit it. "Oh!" he said quite unconcernedly, " everybody seems to think he cave me lO.OOOf. I 400 for my feuillelon on his Etoile du Nord,' but be gave me only 7,000, so he evidently owes me 4,000 !" A curious incident happened once when a critic, Fiorentino, was out of town for a week and begged of me to go and correct his proofs at the MoniUur (whioh appeared on Sunday) and at the OomtUntionntl, (which appeared on Monday). He wrote under the assumed name of " De Rov ray " for the MoniUur, whereas he signed his name at the Conslilutionnel. When I arrived at the MoniUur office I found a letter for him in these terms : Mons. de Rovray Dear Sir : I am going to make my debut in a week. I care for no paper except the Moniteur, because I, as well as my friends, know you to be the only critio who really understands music," etc. I put the letter in my pockot, corrected the proof, and next day went so the Conslilutionnel office, where I found several letteis for Fiorentino. One of them ran thus : "Signor Paolo Fiorentino Dear Sir : I am going to make my debut in a weak. I care for no paper except the Conslilutionnel because i, as well as my mends, know you to be the only critic who really under stands music." The writer, of course, littled dreamed that writing to two papers and two critios, he was addressing the same person, who was thereby enabled to appreciate at its full value the compliment which he paid to each critic " exclusive ly." It is every way remarkable that a man of Meyerbeer's genius as a composer, who combined the melodic genius of Italy, the science of Germany, and the piquant grace or France a man whoso energy awl musical knowl edge were demonstrated beyond all doubt should have been so bad a conduc tor, even of his own works. Ho used to rave about Sir Michael Costa. He said : "Voila le premier chef d'orchestre du monde." And this, not because Sir Michael studied his operas at Cuvent Garden, and did in five rehearsals what under Meyerbeer's guidance had taken months and months to study, but because Meyerbeer could not move the orchestra at his will, and Sir Michael Costa told him: " C'est votre faute," and showed him by a certain method that is, b beating twice with the left hand while he was beating four with the right hand, and instantly all would bo right ; then Meyer beer turned ronn-j and said : ' You are the first conductor in the world !" Meyer beer was as kindhearted and chiding as possible, and many a ptoof of it did he give to people who paid him back in very different coin. Cardinal JMculoskey'sHuuiie. A New York correspondent writes : " I had occasion to stop at the cardinal's bouse a few minutes the other day. It has just been finished and he has moved in. He and his secretary and the servants form the household. The house is of great size, of white marble, Gothic in de sign. It is behind the cathedral in the same block, and, being built of the same material, does not impair the background of the great pile. I bad not looked for elegance in the caidinal's house, but I was not piepared for the simplicity (I had almost said cheapness or bareness) that met my eyes. Tbe walls and ceilings were plain and white, with here and there an oil painting usually of a saint or priest. There arc plain, thin carpets, with chairs and lounges with padded horsehair seats. Tbe carved doors, doer and window-frames and mantels redeemed the cheerless man sion. They were rich and handsome. Tbe cardinal has the second floor, consist ing of a bedroom, reception room, study and bathroom. Above this is a great chapel-like hall, with stained-glass win dows the principal device in tho biggest window being the insignia of the pope. In this great chapel are stored the books that make up his famous library. A house that differs from tho cardinal's only in thejib sence of this library is on the other corner of the samo block. It is to be the home of the clergy and of the vicar-general, who with the five priests connected with the cathedral, now occupie a brownstone house in Fiftieth street, opposite tbe cathedral." Mr. Vaoderbllt's Traveling Palacer. Mr. Yanderbilt's train, on which ho is now making a tour of tho West, consists of two long, light-colored coaches, which are joined together and made as one con tinuous coach by canvas sidings. The platforms are surrounded by iron railing, and access to tho cars can only be obtained by entering the front car. This is CO feet long, and contains the baggao, wash aud dining rooms, a water closet, kitchen and berths for the four cooks and pollers who accompany the party. Everything about it is constructed in the finest manner pos sible. From tho dining 'car one enteis tho parlor coach, which is 70 feet long. It is a striking example of modern luxuri ance and elaborate furnishing. In length it is 70 feet. Near tho fore part is a largo parlor with a centie table, around which is arranged a dozen or so of chairs. Be tween this and auother parlor are two staterooms, with all tbe furnishings of a modern bedroom. The next parlor con tains a number of easy chairs, lounges, &c At tbe end of the car is au apart ment containing a couple of tables, several chairs and a sofa. Here, in a large velvet-covered chaiK close to the great plate-glass window at the rear of the cars, sits Mr. Vanderbilt, where he can look out upon the stretch of track behind his train.
