LANCASTEK DAILY INTELLrGECER, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER &, 1882. f SALISUUkY ITLMS. Late Local Tidings From tbe East JSod. Duriug the last month the Bellevue Presbyterian church has undergone con siderable interior improvements. Tbe pews which were formerly of a dull brown color, have been painted a light drab color releived with brown, which gives tbe church quite a bright appearauoe. The pews are numbered on a neat white porce lain shield, boardercd with gilt. The pul pit and blinds have been repainted, and the floor covered with a beautiful red ingrain carpet, of a pretty design. Many other improvements have been made, but our space will not admit a full description. Services were held in the church on Sunday morn ing, a large congregation being in attend ance. The regular pastor, Itev. W. L. Led with officiated. Marrow Escape. Samuel Kinley, eectiou boss on the Pennsylvania railroad at tbe Gap, nar rowly escaped being struck on Thursday by the " mud express." lie was walking in a westerly direction on the new tem porary track used by the above named trains in couveyiug earth and stones from the grading contract in the " cut." Two trains were passing ou the main tracks, and as bo had his back towards the dirt traiu they prevent ed him from hearing the latter until it was nearly on top of him, when ho gave a quick jump from the track ever the steep embankment while the train rushed past him. Thomas Waldrou, the superintend ent of work, was on tho train that came so near striking Mr. Kiuley, and ho and his men being unable to attract him by tUeir shouts, ho stooped ilowu with tho Jgteution of grabbing him and saving him v with his hands if possible, but just then 'Mr. Kinley made tbe leap that probably saved him from meeting a terrible death. 3Ir. So much has been said of tobacco of late that but little more can bo said. The farmers of this township aro busily cu gared iu cutting and housing their crops. Some is very small and others just tho reverse. Several very huge crops have been brought under our notice recently. Some of tho lengths given seem incredible but are vouched for by good authority. Michael Hess of Mt. Veiuon, who raised some very fiue tobacco last year, beats it by far this year. Ho has over an aero ; many of tho leaves measure 48 by 2G, aud the whole patch will average 40 by 24. Tho growers of the White Hor.so and Springvillo claim that they cannot bo beat within a radius of two miles of cither place. Jos. C. Walker & Son have a very liuo patch of the weed, farmed by J. Frank Hamilton, that has many leaves 40 by 2'd inches. It will average 33 by 22. Elisha McLitnans has an aero on tho farm of I. Lewis Walker that cannot ho beat for size aud regularity, and Samuel Linville has a very fine patch. The Coining Festival at tlioUap. The ladies and friends of the Gap M. church are using their utmobt endeavors to make their festival at that placo on Saturday afternoon aud evening the Uncut affair ever hold by them. Iu caso tho weather should prove inclement tho tables will bo spread iu the town hall where ample provisions have been made. A number of private police have been ap pointed 'for tho occasion to keep good order. A Democratic lady of this neighborhood, who is somewhat of a flower faucior, has 4ivoair baskots full of fiue vines which flhorago six feet six inches in length.
