DUES BOD THIRD EDITION SATURDAY KVEN'Q. AUG. 5, 1882. AT THE CAPITAL TO-DAY'S rKOUEEDlNUS IN CONGRESS Caucus of .Republican Senators The Tax and Knit Goods Bills to be Pressed to a Vote. Washington, Aug. 5. In the Senate the tax bill on motion -of Miller (N. Y.) was laid aside informally and knit goods bill was taken up. Miller proceeded to ad dress the Senate upon the bill. In the House consideration of business on the speaker's table was proceeded with. On motion of Mr. Thomas (Ills.) a joint resolution was passed instructing the sec retary of the navy to convene a court of I inquiry to investigate the circumstances attending tho loss of the Jeannette. Mr.'Dingley ( Me. ) asked leave to put upon its passage the joint resolution pro viding for a joint select committee of three senators and six representatives to inquire into the condition and wants of American shipbuilding and ship-owning interests. Leave was granted and the joint resolution was passed. Naval Appropriation BUI Clauses Agreed to Washington, D. C, August 5. The conference committee on the naval appro priation bill, at a meeting this morning, agreed to the only clauses in controversy which were in regard to tho closing of the navy yards. The Senate conferees reced ed from their disagreement. As agreed upon the bill leaves the closing of navy yards to the discretion of the secretary of the navy. The President Hard at Work. The president sent the following nominations to the Senate to-day: Ulysses S. Grant, and W. H. Trcscott to be commissioners to no- fotiate a commercial treaty with Maxioq. ohn H. Tho Republi can members of the Senate held a caucus to-day and discussed for an hour or moro the subject of continuing tho considera tion of the tax bill. The caucus was fully attended, and with few dissenting expres sions, the opinion prevailed that Congress should not adjourn without adopting in some form a bill to relieve the people from the present burdens of taxation. Several senatorsurgedtheimportanceof passing tho knit goods bill and it was stated that vast interests would be sacrificed if tho bill should be allowed to go over till Decem ber. On the other hand it was urged that should the tax bill be laid aside for tho knit goods bill, tho Democrat's will 'insist upon unlimited discussion and would weigh down the bill with all the amendments that have ben offered tojtho tax bill, and that to insist upon action on cither bill would re sult in protracted party strife and an in definite prolongation of the session. While senators are reticent as to the ultimate decision of the caucus, it is pretty generally understood that a practi cally unanimous decision was reached to pass the tax bill to a vote, and if possible, to secure a vote without amendments upon the knit goods bill. This decision if ad hered to will postpone, perhaps indefni tely, any action on the House resolution for adjournment. UtiN. WJTLKK'S YACHT. Her Vrnmo nn tne Vasty Deep. Boston, Mass., Aug. 5. Gen.
