WHAT MT lAlVKK SAID. 1 BV HORACX OBKELXT.'IH 1842b By the merest chaneo, la the twilight gloom, In the orchard path he met me In the tall, .wet grass, with Its faint perfume And 1 tried to pass and he made no room ; Oh. I triedilrat he woald not let me. Eo 1 stcod and Mashed till the grass grew red. With my fsoe bent down above Jt, While he took my hand, as he whUp'rtng said (How tli- clover lilted each pink, sweet head To lUten to all that my lover said ! Oh ! the clover la bloom 1 love It !) In the high, wet grau went the path to hide, And the low,' wet leaves hnng over ; But I could not pass upon either sldo, For l found mysell when I vainly tried, In the arms ol my steadfast lover," And he held mo there, and he raised my head While he closed the path belore me : And he looked down latomy oyes and said (How the leaves bent down Jrom the boughs o'er bead To listen to all that mylover said ! Oh ! the leaves hanging lowly o'er me !) Had he moved aside a little way I could sorely then have passed htm ; And would not have heard what he liad to say Could I only aside have cast him. It was almost dock, and the moments sped, And the searching nlgbt-wlnd lound ns; But he drew me nearer and softly said (How the pare, sweet wind grew still Instead, To listen to all that my lover said ! Oh : the whl-perins wind around us!) I am sure he knew, when he held me fast. That I must be all unwilling; For I tried to go, and I would have passed. As the nteut was coming with Its dew at last. And the sky with stars was filling ; But he clasped mo close when I would have fled. And he made me hear his story. And his soul came out from his llpa and said (How the stars crept out where the white moon led, To listen to all that my lover uaiil ! Oh ! tho moon and stars In glory .') I know that the grass and tho leaves will not tell, And I'm sure tho wind prociou3 rover Will carry his secret so safely anil well. Ana tuatno being will ever discover One word of the many that rapidly fell rrom tho e.icr lips or my lover, Shall never reveal what a talry-llkc spell They wove round about us that night in tho dell, In the pith through I ho dew-laden clover ; Nor echo tho whlspSrs that made my heart swell As they lell from the lips of my lovci. Editing a Newspaper. Boston Post. There is one editor who has achieved the feat or running a newspaper to suit everybody. Occasionally, to be sure, he has complaints, but be uever fails to sat isfy the complainers that they aro id the wrong. It wasn't always to with him. He only adopted the system after he got desperate. It was one day niter he had received seven complaints that he tried it. A man came in and said : " Why in tophot didn't you priut tho whole of the proceedings of tho society for the Preven tion of Cruelty to Hogs, instead of a brief abstract V The editor replied : " Oh, you made a spooch that wasn't iu tho re port, eh?" Then be went around tho counter. Tho dust new for a few mo ments, aud then it became moro quiot. The editor relaxed, his grip on the man's throat sufficiently to let him speak, and ho said that he guessed tho article was all right, aud he had only come in to renew his subscription. He was let up, paid the money and left, aud as he went out ho col lided with a man who bad an ugly glaro in his eyes, and dancing up to the editor, said : " What d'ye mean sir ; I pay for a sensible newspaper, and here I got a lot of stuff about cruelty to hogs. You ought to be put iu jail for printing such rot." The editor went around the counter again, aud again tho dust new, aud cries of " Take your teeth from my car !" " Let eo o' my hair !' etc., were heard. It web full five minutes before the editor could get the man's coat torn off and put him on the floor with his head in the coal scut tle. But be c'id it at last. Then he jumped high iu the air aud sat down upon the man's stomach, aud tbe yell the man gave, echoing in tho coal scuttle, sounded awful. The editor was about to repeat tho operations, but the man said : " We needn't prolong this agony. Your paper is the best in tho world. It is all right. I'll take it tar ten years in advance." Eight more visitors had tbe same experience. Then came one that the editor couldn't tharsh. It was a woman : " What d'yo mean by publishing fashion ai tides foom a three-year-old magazine?" she asked. "I made a bonnet acoording to your dirce tions, and it's three years behind the style. Oh, you wretch ! you mean, hor rid, iusignificant oh-h !". " My dear madam." he said, "you are right. I'm not fit to run a paper. I'll stop at once." (To a reporter.) " John, don't send up any more copy. Kill that article saying this lady was belle of tho ball last night." " Stop !" she cried. " Your paper is a household treasure. I don't care about the bonnet, aud came to ask you to our house to tea to-night." Tho editor says he wouldn't drop tho rule for anything. Everybody leaves satisfied with his paper. A Husband's Preparations. The other morning when a Detroitor seated hist wife in a car uu tho Michigan central to make the journey to Chicago alone he took a look around him and said to her : ' Now, love, if you should want tbe window raised here are a dozen gentlemen who will break their necks to accommo date you." "Yep. dear." " If you feel lonesome and waut some, body to talk with about attains iu Egypt, Noah's ark or the ice period, don't hesi tate to call upon any of these gentlemen." " I understand." " You won't know enough to leave the car at noon and get your dinner, and you had better ask somo of thorn to accom pany you. If they offer to pay for your meal don't bo squeamish about it." "Of course not." ' ' You want to road to pass away lime. If so, any of these gentlemen will be only too happy to purchase you half a bushel of tho latest books and magazines. Be careful to save 'em for me to read when you get home." " And you say to them we have been married four years ; that we do not live . happily togethor ; I am a domestic tyrant ; you have strong thoughts of procuring a divorce ; you feel that you could love tbe right sort of a husband ; ,you like orang. and peauuts ; yoa are itinooeut1 and con fiding ; you have never traveled ; yon are afraid of getting lost in Chicago, anil you will be ever so much obliged to any one who will get you a hack, see to your trupk and pay all your expenses Good-bye, love." "Gcod-byadarl." - t And wasn't it strango that not one single man in that car even spoke to that lady in a ride of three hundred miles? JoshrBUligs Heard JFromv , NwroRT,'B,:I.;'Attp: II, 18H.
