BASE BALL..
A Lancaster Catcher Abroad.
Last week Wm. Zecher, the well known
catcher of the Ironsides baseball club,
played in three games with the Harvey
Fisbor club of Duncannon. They defeated
clubs at Bloomsburg and Duncannon on
Thursday and Friday and on Saturday
tackled the Ilarrisburg nine. The latter
is an excellent club and havo already
played several games this season with pro
fessionals. The score -Cf Saturday's game
was 20 to 9 in favor of the Harrisburg
club. Zecher played well and this morn
ing's Patriot, in speaking of him, says :
"Zecher, the Lancaster catcher, acquitted
himself in fine style, putting out seven
men with only one passed ball while at tbe
bat he equalled some of the heaviest hitters
of the visitors."
Schiller, who has played with the Iron
sides in this city, was the pitcher of , the
Duncannon and the above paper says of
kirn, " after ho was batted for seven runs
three earned in the fifth and one in the
sixth, Ellis was put in the box, but to no
avail, as the Harrisburgs hit him just as
hard, and he took his place'at first again.
In the eighth Schiller was again hit hard,
the homo team earning four of the eight
runs made with four singles and two bag
gers. The game was witnessed by over
500 people. The Iionsides' club was to
.have gone to Harrisburg last week but
could not. They will go up next Satur
day to try their luck.

Ecuador continues to progress. Alfano,

The Peru-Chilian Imbroglio.
. All hope of foreign intervention seems
to have died out in Peru. A fow illusion

hesitato to declare that no future action will
be taken by the United States unless she is

her kind offices. Scattered Chilian de

A PRIEST KKNOUNCKS 11 IS CHURCH.
Methodism Gains a Convert from Rome.
Emanuel B. Schneider, a Germau priest,
who recently came to Pittsburgh from
tho South, has renounced the Catholic
church, and on Sunday joined the Fifth
Avenue Methodist Episcopal church
of that city. In giving reasons
to a large congregation for changing
his faith, he related a story that some
three years ago, while attending services
in a Methodist Episcopal church in a Wis
consin village, the music, harmony and
delightful feeling impressed him with the
deep conviction that that system of divite
worship was best calculated to purify the
spirit and lift up tho heart to God. The
more he thought and studied ho became
convinced that his own religion was not
based firmly upon tbo work but upon the
guesses and a chain of hypothesis and
more or less the result of human think
ing than divine revelation. The
Rev. Mr. Schneider was) born in
Bremen, Prussia, where he was educated.
He came to the United States when quite
young, studied theology and philosophy
at St. John's college, Missouri, where he
was ordained a priest in 1875. From that
time until the present he has been work
ing in the ministry, mostly traveling on
account of impaired health. Beforo per
mission was given him to join the Fifth
avenue church, his documents were thor
oughly examined by Bishop Andrews, of
Washington, who has jurisdiction over
the diocese of the Methodist church in
which Pittsburgh is situated.
