WM. P. HBNNEOKB, NO. 236JWEST KINU bTltKKT OLD FEUIT CANS- WHAT TO DO WITH THEM. Valuable Sag; ;e8llann from Source. a Respected One of tho must practical questions of tbo present period is ' What use can be made of the constantly accumulating num ber of old fruit cans, that are beginning to loom up like pyramids .in gardens, yards, cellars, garrets, abandoned road way?, back alloys, or wherever elso there is room enough for an old fruit can to 'sit, lie or stand '.'' ' If they were made of wood or paper they might be used' as "kindling" fuel; if of glass, porcelain, or clay, they could be used iu niacademiz ing streets and roads. If they were like most of tho " garbage" they would ra pidly decompose and mingle with and re cuperate the soil ; but, instead of that, they ate imperishable and imperturable old fruit cans, whoso number and volume cannot be said to be "growing beautifully less," but ever ou the increase, and there fore absolutely alarmiug. If there ever was au accumulation eliciting tho ques tion, " What are you going to do about it '.'" it seems to mo it must bo that of old fiuitcans. They are too numorousto be all ubed up as bait-boxes, paint pots, sand buxe.s, impromptu Hower pots, or to bo tied to worthless canine tails ; besides, many of them are too largo for tomo of theso puiposes ; moreover, it is not allow able to throw them into the sheets of municipal corporations, hence their pres ence is not only au unmitigated nuisance, but also a distress. Their manufacture and ornamentation are prolific sources of commercial revenue, and there bliculd be somo piulitablo incaus devised for their liual consumption. Why eauuot some inventive genius start a factory and advertiso for old iruit cans, where they may be " ripped up," llittened out and sold for tooling tilts. The dises.or bottoms would make capital tile;; for domilories, fastened ou like the scales of a fish. The. different sizes could bo adapted to the dif ferent sizes of tho builuiugs ou the roofs of which they are used. Such tiles, paint ed ou both .side:; with some of the modern compositions invented for that purpose, would make a desirable and cheap roof one that perhaps would " last forever and a day longer." Sueh an establishment could obtaiu tho " raw material" very cheap perhaps be paid for taking it away. These temarks do not telate to what may be stiictly regatded as fruit cans, but also to those containing the various kinds of prepared vegetables incuts, fishes, oysters, crab, lobsters or whatever else may be pieparcd aud packed into tin cans, and gaudily labeled ou the ontsido with their specific contents ; and which may now bo abundantly seen on the shelves, iu the show windows, aud iu pyramid:-., pin nacles aud spires in front of nearly every grocery btore in the towns, cities, villages, hamlets, crossroads, &c., throughout tho oulirc American Uuiou if not thioui;hout tho entire circle of civilization. Viewed from the possibilities of its future magni tude, the Mtbjeet indeed becomes a most formidable one. Already these tin cans havo become a matter of municipal con cern at Leadville, Denver, Pitkiu and other localities in Colorado and other min ing regions ol the country, aud especially those destitute of agricultural aud horti cultural surroundings. Just think what an alarming contingency is involved ,jn the next hundred, thousand or million of years. Why, there woa't be room enough ou this earth for the do vclopement of the edibles that till tho caus the whole earth will bo deluged with them. If another Dr. Schleiorman should develop somo thousands of years hence, he might bo able to make Some grand discoveries in rostoriug historic ie mains, long buried in strata of fruit caus. There surely must be, or at least ought to bo somo ultimate prolitablo use to which they may be turned. If not, then they may possess the elements of the final des truction of all physical life, instead of a means to prescrvo it. Somo fertile genius has demonstrated that if every herring's egg from tho days of Adam down to the present time, had developed au adult fish, there would now ho a strata of herrings over tho whole surface of the earth sever.il feet thick, amounting, in volume, to more than the earth itself ; but happily, tlicro aro reactionary checks in the economy cf nature, through which such an awful con tingency is prevented. Now, we need just such a reactionary check iu the me chanical world, in order to limit tuo sur plus production of fruit cans. Tho man who cau solvo this problem will bequeath to humanity a greater boon than tho steam boat, tht) locomotive, tho telegraph, or the sewing machine. C.N'-IionEivr. A WKSTKUN cokoni;k. How Tlipy manage It In California. "Tho fact of it is," said old Dr. Potts, tho Los Angeles coroner, the other day as he strolled through tho morgue with Judge Van Snyder, 'the fact of it is that theso San Francisco coi oner's don't really under stand how to work up their business for all it is worth and mako it boom as it were ' "'What do you mean?' said tho judge, somewhat horrified. ' 'Why, thoy don't know how to really run a corpse for all tho coin that is in it. They don't handle 'em scientifically, so to speak. Now wo do that sort of thing bet ter down our way.' Do, eh ?' " Yes. For instance, there was a Chira raau killed by smoking opium a few months ago, out in tho suburbs of our town, and of course, I was around there and had sworn in a jury beforo the cadaver got cold, and what with summoning witnesses, takiug testimony, &c, before night I had a bill against tho county for $96.50. "Moro than the Chinaman was worth, I should think," said the judge. " But wait. I opened tho grave in the country burial-ground the same night, rushed tbe corpse down to the laboratory and had it embalmed and all ready for emergencies. Well, about throe nights after that they had a free fight out at the Digger Iudiau encampment, and so I had the Celestial pigtail cut short, a few feath ers twisted iu it and hid him in a bush out that way. Of course, it was discovered pretty soon and reported, and as tho jury couldn't agree as to the particular tribe of Indians the deceased belonged to, I im panelled another one nearly double fees, don't you see? and gave the papers a rousing good item. It's a way-up plan to keep iu with the reporters, by tho way." "How much did that make?" " Well, I was about $240 ahead on tho speculation then, so I waited until a lot of Dago emigrants passed through the town, and the next day ono of 'cm was found dropped dead on tbe road with heart disease don't you seo ? Same old corpse, with a big felt hat aud rawhide boots, and his pockets full of macaroni. I think I squeezed about $175 more out ot the taxpayers that time.- Well, I kinder let up for a week after that, aud then bad the remains doubled up in a packing box and found among the unclaimed freight down at tbe railroad station. The papers wroto it np as a' "Mysterious Murder Case," and we had a tea days' examine tion. Lcm'mo see, I think it was $445.50 the 'whole thing panned out before wo were through that time. 'What do yon think of that ?" " Why, it's tho most extraordinary " "Why, that's nothing my dear sir, nothing. I haven't got halt through with that Chinaman yet. When I left borne I just kinder wedged him in among the top branches of a tree in tho woods just out of town, dressed in a suit of complete black, witn an oiu telescope in his coat tail pock et and a pair of big green spectacles on his nose. Catch the idea, don't you.' "' Can't say that I do.' " ' Why, that's the .-eronaut dodge, don't you see ? Unknown scientific party, fallen out of a balloon. My own design entirely. Splendid, isn't it ? The corpse is a little worn out by this time I know ; but what are you going to do with such an infernally unhealthy climate as .Los Angeles? I expect to send tho old lady and tho girls to Paris on those remains yet, if I have to wire 'em together to do it. No my dear sir, depend upon it what these metropolitan coroners lack is push, enter prise sir, and ability." And the doctor reluctantly stopped poking a defunct stock speculator with his cane, and permitted tho judge to take him out for a drink. Now for the practical application of the talc. Four mouths later an acquaintance of mine, while traveling in the wilds of the West, had the following occurrence hap pen to him. I give it in his own words : " On a considerable river we bad to ci oss, notorious for its quicksands, we found, much to the surprise of my men, a newly-creeled ferry close to a desolate looking log cabiu. The charges written on a board near tho cabin wcro high, and would have amounted to $15 for my outfit. The river was low and my men had cross ed it several times at a ford thoy now half a mile below the ferry. They decided to try the ford. When wo got there wo found a freshly made grave closo to tho river bank, aud written on a rude wooden cross the following epitaph : 'Here are drowned aud)buiied Old John, from Texas, aud Lamo Billy, his brother. N. B. The ferry is less thau half a inilo up the river.' " I ditl not like this, aud wanted to pre vail on my men to turn back and use the ferry rather thau risk the quicksands. But they would not hear of it ; tbey knew, they said, that the ford was perfectly safe which, indeed, it proved to bo. The whole outfit had crossed except mv head man, and when 1 looked back I saw him to my astonishment engaged in digging at the grave. Five minutes sufficed to show that old John from Texas and lame Billy, his mother, had not been old trappers, us In tho innocence of my heart I suppis, but two old mules. As tho ford was situated on a i oute frequented by emigrants to Oregon, many ol these unfortunates would no doubt, be frightened to use the ferrj Wo happened to pitcli camp for tho night close to tho river, in view of the cabiu on tho other side. Wo had done Mippcr when who should make his appearance for an cvouing chat but the cute originator of the grave dodge, the practical ferryman! To listen to my men takiug him down was worth millions, though in Western fashion ho seemed very proud of his ingenius trick. ' Ever seen that game worked afore ?' he asked. ' In course you never "have ; it's mine, and it pans out boss, you bet, for it runs them emigrant folks right up to tho squealing point. It struck mo not long ago, when reading in an old paper of that yar Yaukco coroner who kept a dead man's body anchored in a quiet corner of Statcn Islaud bay. That or' chap ought to havo come West ; too good by a full hand (poker expression) for them Eastern folk.' " TKGTH'3 PRII. The Danger of Sound l'reacblng. Last Suuday Parson Banglo became disgusted with the untruthfulness of man kind and preached a vigorous sermon in denunciation of society falsehood. He de clared that lies told just out of politeness were just as wicked as those told with the deliberate inteution of deceiving as to tho value of a horse. Iu fact, theso society lies get folks into the habit of lying, and they readily pick up the other kind. Tho sermon made a great imprcssiou. Most of tho congregation resolved to reform. Cominjoutof chuich, Deacou Joucssaid to Judge Badger, who sat in front of him : "Judge, 1 nope you didn't ioinu my putting my feet under your pew." Tho judge was about to reply : " Oh, certainly not," but ho thought of .tho sermon and answered, "I did, though; your old boots took up all the room, aud wero a fearful nuisance." " Well, said tho deacou, "the hair-oil you use smells so it nearly forced us to leave our pew." Thoy glared at each other, and just then Mrs. Badger and Miss Jenkins camo along Miss Jenkins asked : How do you liko ray now bonnet?" "Oh, I thought it was just love " re plied Mrs. B. and then she thought of tho sermon, and continued, "No, I didn't either. It's a horrid thing. I wouldn't bo seen with it." And 3Iiss Jenkins got mad and replied : "Well, if I wcro you, I'd not wear dirty stockings to church, and, if I did, I'd keep 'cm out of sight." While theso honest conversations wcro going on, Mrs. Ragbag had said to her next-door neighbor, Mr. Gallagher, ' ' I hope tho crying of my baby last night didu't disturb yon ;" and Mr. Gallagher replied, No that is yes." Then Mrs. Ragbag called him a wretch and wept. And then tho clergyman came out and asked young Symonds how he liked the sermon. Symouds said, " It was a grand cf cr no, parson, it was nonEcnse." " Sir !" said the parson, as ho drew himself up indignantly. The parson went homo and meditated in a gloomy frame of mind for tbrco hours, and finally concluded that society lying was wicked, but he wouldn't preach against it again.
