New Yerk World. The Pennsylvania Democrats have been unusually fortunate this year. Their stat convention has been conducted with per fect harmony; the spirit of the patty is everywhere enthusiastic, and every inde pendent voter in the Keysteae state, even without the help of the eutspjkcn plat form, would recojjuize the ticket yester day nominated at Uairisburg as the only ellectual rallyinfj-peint of the opposition te "bosses" in this year of revolts. Net one of all the candidates named at Harris burg was se much as tainted with a sus picion of "bessihm.'' Of the liemiuec for governor, Controller Rebeit E. Pattison, of Philadelphia, favorable mention has aheady been made in these columns, lie was elected te the important office which he new fills in 1S77, running bemewhat ahead of his ticket, but as the Republi cans were then' staggering under the weight of the Hayes fraud of 187C, this fact atttactcd little attention. Mr. Patti son made se geed a controller, he se dis tuiguished himself ?y his keen attention te the public interest and his fearless opposi tion te all sorts of jobbery, that, notwith standing some unpopularity with one wing of his ewu party, he was reneminated in 1880, and seen developed into such a for midable candidate that the Ring Republi can standard bearer was hastily withdrawn and a safer nominee substituted. Mr. Pattison, however, was ic-eleeted by an overwhelming majeiity, running 17,000 votes, or about 23 per cent., ahead of the Hancock electors, and carrying the city by 13,000 votes, while the ether Denio Denie ciatic nominees were defeated 20,000 vete3. This notable circuiustauce led the World te commend Mr. Pattison 1 ist year te the Democrats of Pennsylvania as an eligible nominee for treasurer. He has new been selected as the gubernatorial candidate of the party even in picfereuee te se strong aud popular a Democrat as Mr. Eckley Coxe, of Luzerne, and this se lection gives the country the best possible assurance that ihc Democrats of Pennsyl vania have no idea of aiding the Camui Camui eus. It will encourage the independents te continue their warfaie, since net the most timid of reformers can excuse him self for failiug te support Mr. Pattifceu by alleging that the interests of the state would be safer ii. the hands of General Beaver. It will be said el course here and there that Mr. Pattison's reputation is purely Plnladelphian, and that he may suffer as a candidate from the long-standing divorce between the city and the rural districls. JJut it must be remembered that only through the vote of Philadelphia has the Keystone state been kept in the Republican column, and Mr. Pattison has already shown him self capable of making a formidable in read upeu the Republican majority. Frem still another point of view Mr. Pattison's nomination is te be commended. The Harrisburg convention is the first great Democratic gathering of the year. It has assembled just at the moment when the country is asking itself wheie the auda cious extravagance of the Republican ma jority in Congress is te end,, and what curb can be put upon the impudent dis;o dis;e gatd of decency and el etlicicncy in the civil service displayed by the Republican national committee and the Republican ad ministration. Mr. Pattison's nomination proves that en the great living issue of economical and businesslike govern ment the Democrats arc teund beyond pcradventurc. Ex-Speaker Randall's de uuueiatiens of Republican lccklessnesseu the fioer of Congress arc echoed at Har risburg by the nomination of a public officer of proved capacity and integrity, whose sticiigth with the independent and respectable voters of bis state overlaps the lines of his own party. Iu this sense the nomination is a matter of national inter est, and should it ripen into an election, these who remember the political events of 1S32 will net be s-mpriscd te s-ee it be come a matter of national importance. Democrats all ever the country will de well te invite Republicans all ever the country te compare the standard bearer of the Democracy in Pennsylvania with his rival, the agent of a "bes.V committed by a machine conviction te the policy of ''ad dition, division and silence," and pledged against reform in all ics phase;; and shapes. - -a.-- THE DEATH O' GAK1BALDI. rrofeiuifl reellns; and Ureat I'npul.ir pm pm enstratiiiiiaIl (lvtr Italy. Reme Letter. The agitation and excitement eteatcd by Garibaldi's death is far from being quiet ed. Foreigner? who started te attend last Sunday's celebiatieu are yet arriving in Reme, a little te late indeed, bince the bust of the here is aheady in the Capilol Capilel ine hall. But if they could net witness the mourning they "have come in time te shaie the banquets and the libatieus, and they will be able te tell hew Reme dints if they cannot tell hew Reme wept ever the less of the great man. It would be u difficult task te tepett all that was done and said from Susa te Cata nia and from Pel.i te Nice en this sad occasion. Every city, every village had its own ceremonies. Flags draped in I mourning decorated the king's palace as well as the peasant's cottage. Speeches were poured en the deceased with such a profusion that, if they had b.een water, I think the Alps would have disappeared under the flood. Among the myriads of these theteiical efforts there was one that especially de serves attention and gives rightly the na ture of Garibaldi's historical mission iu this century. It was delivered by tlw prince of Italian parliamentary orators, Mr. Minghctti, the leader of the Right, in Bologna, his own native city. Italians, said he, will net forget what they ewe te Garibaldi se long as the love of their country and the love of vitttie re mains alive in their hearts. Iu order te understand Garibaldi's work iu the re vival of Italy it is necessary te lemcniber the difficulties which steed against Italian unity. It was necessary that at the fit moment all the forces of the nation should at once work together in perfect co-operation. The want of any one of these forces would have retarded the work which thinkers and men of action had for many centuries vainly longed for. It was neces sary te have a national dynasty, old and faithful, surrounded by a brave and cour ageous army ; in a word, a prince such aa Dante and Machiavelli had foreseen and foretold, who would become the leader of the national movement. Such a man was Victer Emanuel. But, en the ether hand, the people must help the work and co operate with the king, and the roan who represented the people was Gari baldi. Yet their conjoint action would net have been sufficient without a skilful diplomatist with an international policy, wise aud sure, te come ferwaid in the su preme moment and check ail external forces contrary te the Italian movement, and enlist all the sympathies of the friends of Italy. Such, a man was present, tee, and it was Count Cavour. Tradition, people, and getiieus were the three elements indtspensible te Italian re generation, and thus the work of Gari baldi is explained. Then the orator narrated the first period of Garibaldi's career in the Seuth Ameri can wars ; the second, when in 1848 he came back aud fought in Lombardy, Venice and Reme : thd third, when Ca- veur gave him the command of the volun teers, including the victories of Varese, San Fcime and Come, which were only stepped by the treaty et Villafranca. Next, starting from Quarte en the Ligu rian shore. Garibaldi conducted the land iug of the thousand at Palerme, the pas sage of the strait, and the victorious entry into Naples, though 30,000 soldiers yet held all the fortresses of the city. Then came the meeting of Garibaldi and Victer Emanuel at the Voiturne, the plebiscites, and the quiet return of the here te Ca prera. In the fourth period of his history, Garibaldi cannot bear any delay in the accomplishment of the national enterprise. He cannot understand Cavour's policy and fights him in Parliament, just as after his death he fights his policy en the battle fields of Aspromonte and Mcutaua. These last episodes, said Minghctti, prove that none of the elements which contributed te the revival of Italy could work alone. This is the reason Garibaldi failed every time he attempted te act by himself. Yet the best part of his life is that he was never blinded by self-love. He was easily iccencilcd te Victer Emanual, and, faithlul te the king, he lights under his command in 1800, the most obedient of seldieis. The last episode of his career is the at tempt te help France in 1S70. This proves his humanitarian instinct, always ready te aid the oppressed. Prompted by patriot ism, he visits Reme again iu 1875, and suggests the Weiks of Ihc Tiber in order te make Reme a healthy city. This legendary life of Garibaldi, con cluded the orator, will remain as a receid of the superhuman stiuggles which brought fmtii Italian libeity; aud it will remain, als', as an example of self-sacrifice and abnegation lu futme generations of Ital ians. Subscriptions have been opened all ever Italy for the erection of a national monu ment, as well as for special monuments in many places. The project of ciematien comes ferwaid again, all the papers having urged that the last will el the dying general must be re spected. As for" the place where his ro re tuaius or his ashes will be kept, it seems very likely this will be the J.inieulum, the hill of his gl.ny, wheie he fought the soldiers of the Fieneh republic in 1849. The radical party would like te see the cremation performed in the very city of Reme, and the papers have aheady begun te agitate for it. The government journals oppose this idea, en the ground that Gari baldi wanted te be burned at Caprcra, and te remain there. Ii I should compare the funeial of Gari baldi te another historical funeral of our times. T should say that Italy is new what America was en the death of Lincoln.
