Hew It is Ke- Special Cor. et the Istelligescxb. HAr.niSEunc, June 21, 1882. When a Lancaster county Democrat proposed Brosius' name for congressman-at-large te a brace of. Republican politicians from this county in Harrisburg the evening be bo be fere the convention, they did net "catch en " at all. There was no predetermina tion about it all. The machine people weic cautiously letting drop Gen. Lilly's name, anil it was understood that he would be entirely acceptable te Cameren. Ue wanted the place, tee, and put a substitute into the convention te de his voting. J. Heward Jacobs, of Reading, was urgently seeking the nomination, and had his headquarters in full blast and his delegation actively at work. Kut he made no headway even among his neighbors. It was net until after Brosius' speech in the caucus that the movement for his nomination became general. Un like his effort in the original convention, when he nominated Livingston, he suc ceeded this time iu fairly gaining 'the at tention of his audience before he began, turbulent and disorderly a3 it was. As he spoke c?raesl1y aud persuasively of the duty of the delegates te be patriots before they were partisans, and deplored the troubles in the party aud urged the ne cessity for fixing them up, the anti-mac jim people thought he was en their side and lustily cheered him. Sam Lesch looked troubled and began te shout for the "ques "ques tien," but somebody quieted Lesch with the assurauce that before he get through Iiresius would be ".ill right." And when he lather artfully pointed out that the recommendation te ' the state committee te adept all honorable means te harmon ize tlie paity se as te secure the success of the Republican ticket," gave the commit tee amnie discretion te de everything that could lie done tbe applause rang from the Stalwait side. Tlie anti-machine party .aw that they had get their hands into the trap and rather sullenly asseuted. Rut Brosius had captmed the convention and his nomination was easy Cel. Gebin, of Lebanon, named him and the preposition was warmly received. When the nominations had closed he arose with dignity and in the most becoming maimer declined a place for which he be lieved he was net the .strongest man. His speech wen him meie friends. The Lan caster county lobby crowded down upon him and urged him te accept. Frem the platform, besides the delegates, McJIellen, Vince Alexander, Dec Gatchell, Geerge II. Eltla, Ilarve Raymond, and Dave Comtney could be seen struggling with him. Tem Cechian who had at first beeu indisposed tewaid the nomination saw the drift and went with it. Somebody steed up and asked Brosius whether if the convention thought he was the man for the plaee he would take it. Gebin an swcicd for him that he would, and the balloting went en. Philadelphia led off for him, but when the McManes people suppeitcd him Bunn and some of the reg ulars suspected that he was acceptable te the anti-Cameren delegates and began te scatter their votc3else where. But it was seen evident that the convention was nearly all for him, and long before the names of the leprcsentative delegates were reached Philadelphia aud Pittsburgh had wheeled into Hue, and Bunn was ever iu the parqrjbt circle talking te Brosius. When it was finished, in answer te loud calls, Brosius arose but refused te take the platform. He gravely waved the con vention into silcnce and made a brief speech. His opening was net auspicious. It was a grim joke, indeed, te remind the convention of the early death of a Picnch nominee, aud when he introduced himself as a hey soldier, bleeding at Bermuda Ilundtcd, he argued himself uuknewn. Ills lack of sel," iosscssieu could easily be pardoned te the excitement of the hour. Geerge II. Ettra arese and shouted that Lancaster county was geed for 11,000, and when the convention adjourned the great body of delegates were well satisfied that they had done a wise thing in adding a crippled soldier aud an eloquent stump speaker te their ticket. a ski:i:naik te mic. ukesilm. lle Hopes llte Nomlnatteu May lie Over ruled for Geed. L.ist evening about 7 o'clock a notice was posted en the Examiner bulletin beatd calling upon citizens irrespective of paily te assemble in Centre Square at 8::0, and maich in a body te the residence of Air. Biesius aud extend him ceugratu latiens en his nomination for congressman at-large. The City band was engaged, and at the hour named came into the square, wheie quite a large number of people were assembled. As the band moved up North Queen street the crowd fell in behind it, constantly augmenting as it moved along. The route was up North Queen te Orange up East Orange te Duke, ddwu Duke te King, out King te Charlette, out Char Char eotte te Orange, and thence te Mr. Brosius' residence. -110 West Orange. By the time the precession l cached its destination, it numbered -100 or .100 persons. I The band played a popular air, and then AI. P. Shenck, chairman of the Republican county committee, proposed three cheers for Mr. Brosius, which were niven with hcaitygoed will. Mr. Brosius appeared at the front deer and was greeted with applause. He was introduced te the crowd by Chairman Shenck, and with con siderable emotion responded te the compliment paid hir.i. Bie said the nomination was net of his seek ing; when it was sug&eted in con vention he opposed it with all his power ; it had come upon him like a thunderbolt frjm a cloudless sky, and stunned him te an extent that his tongue is net yet free fiem the effects of the electricity. He thought at the time that the nomination should net have been made and he Was net yet sure that the convention had acted wisely. He hoped, however, that it might be overruled for geed by that higher power which has made nothing in vain. Mr. Brosius concluded his remarks by paying a high tribute te Lancaster county and its people, and again thanking his fr.eads anil leinw-aitizeuF, el all parties, for their neighborly call, and the enthusi astic manner in which they had expressed their Kind regards ler aim. Alter turee mere cheers aud a tiger, the band played another selection, during which time many of the callers paid their personal respects te the nominee Although the meeting was called irre. spective of party, the great majority of these present were Stalwart Republicans. There were '.a, few Democrats, personal friends of Mr. Brosius, present, but the leading Independents erc conspicuous by their absence. WU AT IS TUOUUII 1' or IT. Opinions or Representative alittral Jour nals. Philadelphia Times. The nomination of Marriet Brosius, of Lancaster, for congressman-at large, was simply the consummation of the policy that was conceived te make Mr. Waua makcr receive the death-blew that was aimed at Cameren and the boss system. Mr. Brosius is a most exemplary aud worthy citizen, and he possesses abilities ouite above mediocrity. He was one of the youngest and most gallant of the many soldiers of the Old Guard, and he has been a lawyer rather than a politician since the war. lie Is of the class of men who believe iu a purer and nobler Repub licanism than is presented te-day, but like thousands of ethers, he is never sufH ciently courageous te deinaud immediate reform. He is of the amiable, ex cellent sort that is earnestly for re form next year, and would be glad te have it this year if it could be had without disturbing the bosses. With all his ability and worth as a soldier and citi zen, he has never been thought of for party honors, until the evil day came when the better men in the rear had te be called te the front te receive the terrible fire against the machine. When the people of Lancaster had te he cheated out of an honest expression for governor in May last, Judge Livingston was made the innocent agent te execute the machine pregramme by submitting the question of instructions for him as a candidate for supreme judge. Livingston was next made te suggest Brosius as one of his delegates, anil the bosses made him their candidate. They carried him ostensibly as the Livingston champion, but in fact as the man who could null the machine chestnuts out of ftre aud cnable the bosses te defeat tLe Independents. The Livingston faiceseived its purpose, made Brosius the useful ser vant of the boss system while sincerely despising it, and for that service he was rewarded yesterday with the only com pensation the speilsmen could offer the right te be defeated in disgiaee for the wrongs of his new masters. Mr. Brosius has done himself a meat wrong by acccptiug the nomination et the mmp of a les convention. Under eidi nary circumstances he would be a strong candidate for Congress, and under all cir cumstances he would make au heuest and creditable representative ; but he will he a weak candidate in the state generally and specially weak in Lancaster county. His present attitude will be regarded by these who knew him best as oue of be trayal of a cause te which he ewes service alike by conviction and profession. The machine followers de net leve him ; the Independents distrust him, and he will be ground te powder between the upper and the nether millstones of faction. He was doubtless sincere in his expressed wish te decline the nomination, but the amiable wcakuess that has made hiin just less than a great man in all the battles be tweeu the bosses and the people, made him tee feeble te protect himself, and he was made te bow his head te the block where retributive vengeance, provoked by the sins of ethers, is te play its deadly part. Mr. Brosius will be beaten because the cause he must espouse is a stench in the nostrils of the Republican people, and he will well deserve the blew for his sub mission te the spoils system that has dea piscd him in its seasons of nnthreatcned power, and new accepts him only because it seeks te divide its disasters with the better men it has hated. Seme riillaeelpbla opinions. The Philadelphia delegates last evening appeared well pleased with the work of the convention. Mr. McManes said that although at the beginning he had had no anticipation of the nomination of Mr. Bro sius he considers him because of his iu dependent chaiacter and carter, his ora torical power and his apparent devotion te Republican principles a candidate who strengthens the whole ticket. All of the delegates express the same opinion, aud in speaking of their candidate's value upon the stump say that he was almost the only mau in the paity whom the state commit tee seme years since could select te speak with the eloquent Henry Armit Brown. ' I don't knew anything of Brosius, the convention's nominee," said William B. Smith, president of the select council, ex cept that he is a Lancaster attorney. I wanted General Lilly nominated and ex pected that he would be. 1 de net wish te express any i eided opinion about the convention till I liave lead every word of what it did. As for Brosuis, I don't knew why he was nominated at all. I'm haps it was because, being an obscure man, lie has no enemies and, net knowing anything against him, the delegates voted in his favor." SKNTIIUKNTIN 1'irTMlUKOII. The S ul warn Met at All Satisfied itlt tbe domination. In Pittsburgh thcic is censideiablc dis satisfaction among tegular Republicans ever the nomination. When the auunuuce ment of the action of the convention was made public the gcueral cry heaid en all sides was : "Who is he ?" Iu an inter view with Majer A. M. Brown he said : "The nomination is a peer one and is mcrly the action of a machine conven tion iu an exigency. It will net strengthen the ticket in this cud of the state." When asked if he would support the nomination he declined te answer. Jehn F. Latnbie said : "I think the nomination is a miser able one." Majer Martoeth remarked : " It is au eutiage. Allegheny county should have had it, and I deu't think it has strengthened the ticket in this county in the least. Ask anybody en the stieet and they wiil tell you the samn thing." Jesiah Cehen, who refused te lecegnize the leealled convention and declined the suppeit of the delegates from Allegheny county, speaks iu the same strain. What is Said In AVaIdnten In Washington the nomination is ic garded by ceitaiu politicians heic as aeon aeen aeon cessien te the Independents. Cameren said that he is very well satisfied with the nomination. He added that the nominee is a first class man and will make a strong candidate. Anether Pennsjlv.inian, a member of the Heuse, who leans towards the Stalwarts, but is a little out of pa tience with Camereu says Brosius is a strong man. The fact, however, that he has Independent inclinations will make little difference se far as securing Inde pendent votes is concerned. Se bitter is the feeling against Cameren that he does net believe Brosius will draw live hun dred votes from the Independents. The 1'elnts in Ills Fat or. Philadelphia itecerd. We are net certain when we come te consider the negative as well as the posi tive advantages of this nomination that the convention could have chosen mere 'wisely. The caudidate hails fiem a Re- puhcan stronghold, thu nomination was unsought, and the choice lias no clement of offensivenesa in it which will preclude future accommodation or embitter party differences. These are positive advan tages. On the ether hand, it may b3 said that Mr. Brosius docs net go into the field with any ready-made enmities te combat. His inconspicuousness in the past history of Republican state pelith s is a point in bis favor. He is a dark horse iu the race whose pace and actieu cannot, be deter mined in advance, and it may turn out, that that the rank and file will be mightily pleased with him. A Ceed .Man te IleHeaten. Philadelphia Inquirer. A lawyer of excellent reputation and a . ... .. citizen of most estimable character. If the convention had been all that it should have been, and was net, it could net have been nominated a candidate of greater worth or fitness. The convention might as well have nominated a candidate of a different sort, with quite as much probability of success with a Republican opponent contesting the ground with him within the party lines. Indeed it had no right, after it had resolved te invite or accept no offers of conciliation and unity, te put up se geed a man, only te have him knocked down by party dissensions. Is Ue ie Get OR the Ticket '.' Philadelphia Tress. His nomination was due te the excellent impression made by his eloquent, judi cieus and persuasive speech in laver of the resolution looking towards au honerablo settlement. He is a fine orator, a lawyer of high standing, a soldier of gallant record, a Republican of independent thought aud a gentlcmau of stainless life. He appreciates as well as all rational observers, that his is net a ques tion of mcu, and his action pledges him te use his inllucncc for the promotion of peace. An Open Choice. Neil'.i Aiuciieau. He is a gentleman of excellent personal repute, a member of the bar, whose abili ties aie lecegnizcd by his associates, aud we believe of political alliliatiens which aie generally considered independent. A nomination, iu fact, which, being inoffen sive and creditable, could generally he ac cepted as worth of undivided Republican suppeit. But the action of the convention is such a i will de absolutely nothing te smooth the difficulties lying in the way of Republican harmeuy. Aud it cau be but a matter of pciseual prefeience or judgment whether te support Mr. Brosius or Colonel McMichauI. The Kepubuciiit Heme Organ. Lancaster Examine;. Mr. Biesius is se well known iu our community, that the praise of his ability, integrity and indepsudence would be but the carrying of coals te Newcastle. He has net sought this office, nor, indeed, any political preferment. The honor has come te him unsought and unasked. Ne one can assert that "bosses " have made him. He i.-, the choice of a ficc and nntrammelcd convention. He is a Republican by choice and ediicatieu, aud in the halls of our national Legislature wiil net only maintain the principles of the -party, but make his mark in the councils of the country. After The Marshall Fashion. Philadelphia Ledger. The nomination for the "Marshall" vacancy was made very much after the fashion of the eiiginal proceeding. It fell, without any precencert, en a delegate te the convention from Lancaster, Mar Mar reott Brosius, who seems, by a seit of accident net at all contemplated by him, te have first captivated his fellow delegates by his address in caucus, aud then captur ed 'their votes in the convention', although he declaied, and ue doubt truly, he did net want the nomination. A Cheap Kip." Philadelphia Keeerd. It is related of a celebrated lawyer that one day while driving he found the heises running away.
