General Dudley made the first address and he was followed by General Scales. Quite a number of soldiers and members of Congress followed in the same vein, which was that of conciliation and com mon brotherhood. Yesterday morning the party repaired te the scene of the first day's engagement, including the move ments of Federal troops under Generals Reynolds, Heward and Denblcday, and Confederates under Generals A. P. Hill and Ewell, and went ever the ground wheic General Reynolds was killed. The place whcie General Dudley was wounded that where Archer's brigade was cap tured and numerous ether points of in terest were pointed out. "Veterans of both armies walked ever the field, giving vivid accounts of various parts they took in the contest. The rest of the day was spent in visiting ether parts of the field. EMULATING JESSIE JAMES. A Wiiyne County Man Ordered te " Stand ami uelirer" by a Highwayman. While Edwaid Ilurd was driving through the weeds near Starrucca, Wayne county, a highwayman, whose features were con cealed by a black mask, sprang from be hind a pile of brush and drawing two pis tols, ordered him te " stand and deliver." Ilunl was alone, unarmed and had a con siderable bum of money in his pockets. Wishing te escape, if possible, he sprang from the wagon and ran as fast as he could down the read. The highwayman pursued him and failing te catch him fired a shot which took effect in Kurd's back and made him fall. He regained his feet, however, and in a few steps mero came within sight of a house. He screamed for help and fell exhausted. The highwayman fled. The men who came in response- te llurd's call assisted him te .the house, when a physi cian was sent for and the wound, which was found te be a dangerous one, dressed. Hind's team was found near where he was stepped by the masked highwayman, but no clue te the criminal was obtained. The matter has been placed in the hands of de tectives and it is hoped the desperado will he caplmcd. HONORING MRS. STOWE. Among the moie proniiuent persons pre sent were Oliver Wendell Helmes, Jehn G. Whittier, J. T. Trewbiidge, Bronseu Alcetfc, W. B. Howells, Themas Bai'cy Aldrich, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Mis. Burnett, Geerge B. Lathrop, Nera Perry, James Parteu, Lucy Steuc, E. P. Whip pic, Lucy Larcom, Lyman Abbett, Louisa Chandler Mouiten, Judge Tourgee, Fred. Douglass, Henry Ward Bcccher, Chas and Edward Bcccher, Isabella Hoeker Beechcr and a number of ether representatives of the Bcccher family. Guests were pie seuted by Wm. Lloyd Garrison, jr. This occurred in the parlors, the literary exer cises following in a large tent set up behind the house, in close proximity te the " Old Elms " Addresses were made by Mr. Houghten, Henry Ward and Ed ward Bcccher and a number of lettcis were read from absent friends and poems were delivered, many of them by their authors, including poems by Oliver Wen dell Helmes, Jehn G. A dispatch from Hamilton Ohie, says : A heavy wind and tain storm visited Cin cinnati yesterday, uprooting many trees and unroefing several houses. The Miami liver is rising rapidly and all the manu factories en the river bank have been closed. Heavy shewec? with wind have prevailed all through Southern Indiana and Ohie, impeding railroad travel and interrupting telegraphic communication. In Indianapolis the severest thunder storm of the season came. Twe inches of rain fell during the night. At 7 o'clock Pegucs run commenced rising rapidly and intwoheuis had Heeded that portion of the city cast of the Union depot, along the Union railway track, as far north, as Maryland street and northeast te Wash ington street. The cellars of the whole sale houses en Seu.h Meridian street, south of Georgia, aie rapidly filling up. While a party of fifteen or twenty were standing en a platform ever Pegucs run it gave way, dropping all into the water. Seme of them were rescued immediately, ethers passed through the culvert under the Union depot and were rescued below, while ethers, il is supposed, were drowned. One repot t says nine were drowned. AN OLD MINE CAVES IN. Narrow Escape from Death of a Sleeping Fumily The Read ItlecKed. At an early hour yesterday about fifty feet of Newcastle township read fell iute the old workings of the colliery at New Castle, formerly operated by Geerge S. Repplier. The cave in cuts off all wagon traffic te Frackvillc, and all points north of St. Clair, until it is filled in, which will take considerable time. Te facilitate mat ters a large force of men went te work this morning cutting a temporary read around the break te allow the passage of car riages. A dwelling house and a stable steed ou opposite sides of the read and were nearly carried into the hole. The inmates of the house were awakened by a crash and moving of the house, naif of the foundation was carried out of sight and the buildin; steed in the balance, ready te topple ever. THE CLUGSTON MURDER. Jehn L. Hey, of Valley Ferge, Oilers te Pro duce the Murderer. The murder of Samuel Clugsten at Valley Ferge, in March, 1881, is net yet forgotten. Jehn L. Hey, the proprietor of the Mansion house, of Valley Ferse. claims te have positive information of the whereabouts of Clugsten's slayer. Hey was in Norristown and communicated with the ceuuty officials and stated that if the reward of 1,000, which has been offered for the murderer's arrest will be paid he and two friends, with the assis tance of the borough police, will preduce the missing murderer, " dead or alive." These parties say that the theories about the probable murderer are all wide off the maik and that if the reward offered is positively assured they will speedily and surely unveil the shrouded mystery. Mr. Hey is a truthful and a respectable citizen and his statements are net regarded as wild or fantastical. Several weeks after the murder was committed $1,000 was raised by subscription, which was offered as a reward for the apprehension of the muidercr. That fund is iu the hands of the county officials. The Republican state convention of North Carolina met at Raleigh yesterday. William A. Leng, Democrat who declined, were then endorsed. Mrs. Montgomery, wife of William Montgomery, a hotel keeper at Larimer station, near Grccnsburg, when filling oil lamps left the cau en a table while she went into the next room. Her little nine-year-old girl took the can and poured some oil en the fire which ignited the oil and it cxplodcd,killingtweof thechildren. Fatally Stabbed by Uis Roem Mate. In Alteena en Tuesday night Jehn Beyle a young man employed in the railroad shops went te his bearding heuse iu a intoxicated condition and threw himself en the bed, falling upon his'roem mate, an aged man named William Vanzandt. A quarrel ensued and blows were struck. Afterwards when Beyle undressed him self he found that he was stabbed twice ever the region of the heart. A physician was summoned, but he pronounced the wound net dangerous. This morning Beylo was found dead in his bed. A pest mor tem examination Jisclesed the fact that both cuts were fatal, ene of them touching the heart. Anether loom mate swears that he saw Vanzandt stab Boy'e during the scuffle. The accused was sent te jail te await trial for murder.
