LANCASTER DAILY INTEUIGENGER TUESDAY JUNE 6, 1882. THE TOBACCO MAEEET. Tit A OK IN SEED LEAF AXO HAVANA. Tr.ii tctleus for the -Fast Week Tbe Dnll- eit Aloetn or the Year in the Seed Leal Buclncw. United States Tobacco Journal. It is absolutely unezplainable. Duller than at any ether time in the present year has the leaf business been during the month just past. And here comes the revenue receipts for May in the two great est districts in the country (Second and Third New Yerk) showing an increase of nearly eight millions of cigars sold. The large cigar manufacturers almost shun the market ; the small ones have tee little money and trade, and jobbers buy only from hand te mouth. This state of things -has new lasted se long that a change is bound te come very seen. Stocks in man ufacturers' hands are nearly exhausted ; auy further increase in orders for cigars will force them into the leaf market. This event is being looked for with a great deal of eagerness in fact, tee much of it. There is an immense stock of seed leat en hand. There arc some 20,000 cases of '80 tobaccos and nearly 300,000 of '81. The first inquiry will be for old. If reason able figures prevail every pound of it will go. If holders, especially the'c of Penn sylvania, persist in r.&king hih prices, they may lese a lap' chance of at least coming out of the l eye. We venture te the New Yerk mar!- "tobacco (at this pl . J without a black . y that there are in oreholdeipof new of the yc .r) than tlierc were ever bet rc. .Nearly every house has packed 'S tobaccos, a:.d nearly every oho has an assortment of the various crops. Everybody likes te be the first te sell out. lhe long spell or dullness has discouraged many holders ; many need mono; many fear a break in prices. Then lore a lin chance exists te buy low. Wnen an exca aent sets in courage is regained and . ' .ky holders become bold again. It is ai- -cnt that money will be lest by many j.eluers of new tobacco, Seme of the stocks thought te be without a blemish some months age have under gone a serious change for the worse. It would be an injustice te holders here te go into particulars at this comparatively early date. In the new Pennsylvania very little line is te be found. It can be safely asserted that there are net half a dozen houses in this market that have clean, uninjured '81 Pennsylvania tobacco with a sufficiency of line wiappers in a hundred cases. These that held fine lets will prebablyj make a little money net much, because Wisconsin and certain portions of New lerk state are uaugereus competitors. Besides this, it is tee late in the season for iioiuers ei new tobaccos te be stilt m . prices, i no punts ei tins year s crop show beautifully and bespeak an enormous yield. There must be an outlet found for it if the elements periuit it te mature. Sumatra, tee, again is increasing in favor, and increased importations add te make it, if net a formidable a by no means in significant competitor tesecd leaf. Taking all these facts into consideration, it seems as if holders of new tobaccos are net ex actly en the read te foitu.ne this ycai. The ta's of th'e week we quote as fol fel lows : Pennsylvania Crep '80: 450 cases; fillers, 0 te 7 cents; wrappers, 30 te 42 cents ; medium running, 13 te 1G cents. Connecticut Crep '80 : 280 cases, most ly wrappers, 35 te 45 cents. Ohie Crep '80 : 700 cases : partly for expert, at 4 te C cents ; geed running, 8 te H cents. "Wisconsin Crep 80 : 100 cases running, !) cents. Havana Quite active. Fer fiue stock there exists a geed demaud. Sales, 900 bales. Helders of fine '80 stock are asking lrem 70 te W) cents ;n bend. Gads' Weekly Kcperr. Sale of soed leaf tobacco reported by J. J. Gans' Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers. Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending June 5, 1882. 450 cases 1880 Pennsylvania, fillers, C6jc. ; wrappcis, lG(g.30c. ; 213 cases, 1&81 Wisconsin, Havana seed, p. t. ; 100 cases 1880 New England, wrappeis, 13(i) 30. ; 150 cases 1880, Ohie, 4(g)9c. Total, 813 cases. The Lecal Tobacco Market. Everything remains very quiet here at home. In old tobacco thcre is almost nothing doing. Here and there purchases are made of the new crop, in small lets, at prices as low as G and 2 and as high as 20 and 3, these prices representing the top and bottom of the market. The following sales are reported from Bird-in-Haud : L. R. Reagcr, li acres, te Kendisr&Ce.. at 15, 7 and 3 ; Jeseph Styer, ji i i acres, te same, for 20, 7, 7, and 3 ; S. S. Wisscr. acres, te same, at 1G, 7 and 3. Little can as yet be said of the coming crop. The unusually untewaid weather has kept back the young plants, and the frosts killed net a few of the early one?, se that although the first week of June is almost past net one tenth of the plants are as yet set out or fit te set. J. W. Reynolds of Pert Deposit, Cecil county, Md., set out 5,000 tobacco plants en the 17th of May, and wants te kuew who cau beat it in Lancaster county The plants were all raised in an epen bed. Iu this part of Maryland is as geed land for tobacco as in Lancaster county, but the peeple generally are afraid te risk the cultivation of tobacco. Tobacco meich. The Yerk Dispatch states that L. D. Kf-'.dig & Ce., of this city, received in thai borough a few days since from i armors one hundred wagon leads of tobacco. It wa placed en cars at the station aud filled live Height cars. The weight was from 80,000 te 90,000 pounds. B. Rosenwald A, Ures., dealers iu leaf tobacco at 147 Water street, have sued Oscar Hammerstein, the editor of the U. S. Tobacco Journal, for damages te the amount of $25,000. The cause of actiuu is a report of the market written and pub lished by defendant en February 11 last, and which the plaintiffs claim te have in jured them te the extent named. The gist of the alleged libel is te the effect that one tobacco firm in New Yerk, (names net given), held large quantities of the J.' unpopular" and "unreliable" 1880 New Yerk Big Flats tobacco, and " by clumsy trickery and the aid of flunky brokers have tried te make it appear that they were selling it in large lets," whereas it is what is commonly called a "sticker." The offensive article continues : "The peeple who, under the guise of assumed rcspcctibility, resort te low commercial jugglery te leist a valueless, net te say dangerous, article upon unsuspecting manufacturers and jobbers, and thereby probably cause their ruin, are no better than the 'steel pigeons' of a low Chatham street dive." Mr. Hammerstein entered bail in $1,000 te answer at court. The Journal Insists that the tobacco in dustry should be represented en the tariff commission, and names for the position " Mr. Lerin Palmer, who is in every re spect qualified for it. He has had a life long experience in the trade, is highly es teemed and respected, and a gentleman whote bright and unstained record has gained for him the confidence of all who kn-w him."
