LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENSEft FRIDAY JUNE 2, 1882. $ itanrastrr C-ntclltflcnccr. FHIDAY EVENING, JUNE 2, 1882. TOBACCO CULTURE. Medes or Farming, It la Lancaster County. " G. A. G." in Country Gentleman. I find that farmers differ widely in their opinions regarding the best modes of cul tivating tobacco. In conversation with farmers in Lancaster county, I was re peatedly reminded of the great importance which is placed en keeping the soil loose and mellow between the rows early in the season, by constant and thorough use of the cultivator. Nearly all successful growers consider early cultivation a requi site te success, but there are some who be lieve that the cultivator should be laid aside as seen as the rootlets of the plants have spread enough te occupy a consider able part of the surface soil. In my own belief we cannot cultivate tee often or tee deeply while the plants are passing through the earlier stages of their growth, but when the leaves and rootlets have se extended that they cover and penetrate the larger portion of the surface soil, the cultivation should cease and the rootlets be no longer dis turbed. The tobacco plant roots near the surface, and hence a mellow surface is necessary te insure a large and rapid growth. This is one of several questions relating te the culture of tobacco which have net been satisfactorily explained. My brother at the New Yerk state experiment station has premised te decide the ques tion, if possible, by careful experimenting, which may, at least threw some new light upon the subject. It is new generally con ceded that flat or level cultivation for tobacco is prcferable te any method which forms a hill or mound of earth about each plant. It is customary te pass ever the tobacco patch at least twice with a hoe, and cut out all weeds, and mellow the Mirfaee soil about the plants, where the cultivator docs net reach. If soil is pulled away from the plants during the process of hoeing, it should be replaced with mel low soil from between the rows. Killing the Werm. Net far from the first of July, with early planted tobacco, the tobacco worm ( Ma Ma creailn Carolina') will make its appearance. Like the potato bug the tobacco worms are always te be found at about the usual time, although tlicy are much mere num erous home years than ethers. There ap lcar te be two breeds of these worms ; one coming in July, ana the ether during the latter part of August. They are near ly always .sufficiently numerous te cause gicat d.iniage te the crop, unless great vigilance is exercised in destroying them. In tin! Southern tobacco growing sections, including the Lancaster section, growers guaid against the enemy by cultivating the "Jamestown" or "jimson" weed, in and about the tobacco fields. The moth erbuttcifly which lays the eggs which produce the larva: or worms and which is as laic, when of full size, as a humming bird, hevcis about the ilewcrs of the Jamestown weed, fiem which they get their feed, in evening and early merniqpi By putting a small quantity of poison, made f j eni a .solution of strychnine and Lwcctencd water, into the blossoms, the mellis aic dc:tiecd and prevented from depositing the eggs. in (-'lieiniisitr county, N. Y., and in most of the Neithcrii tobacco growing .sections, the Jamestown weed is net used, becau.se it is difficult te make it bloom in season, and the common method of de stroying the enemy is te pick oft the worms by hand. In southern Pennsylva nia, even when the greatest effort is made te destroy the winged insects that lay the eJJKs. onengh worms are found te necessi tate hand picking, in order te prevent damage te the leaves. The work of worm ing is a long and laborious task, for It must be continued as long as the tobacco lcmains in the field, and the mere ther eughly it is performed the fewer holes there will be in the leaves of the tobacco, and the greater its value. A drove of turkeys or a hen with chicken!;, will aid greatly in destroying the worms in to bacco, and may be used te advantage Topping and Suckerlup. It is the nature of the tobacco plant te produce seed as well as leaves. But as only the leaves are desired in most cases, an operation is performed upon the plant, called "topping," which diverts the energies or the plant from the seed te leaf growth. Leng experience in tobacco culture has taught the tobacco-growers of Lancaster that the topping should be done as seen as the seed bud makes its appear ance above the leaves. This the growers of many sections will de well te consider, for it is customary in some localities te allow the seed stalk te push up te its full height, and llewer, before it is broken off. It must be obvious te all that unnecessary growth of the stalk and the top leaves, which are lobe removed in the process of topping, is made at the expense of the vitality of the pl.tut, and the yield of the crop is lessened in consequence. The num ber of leaves that should remain en a plant after it is topped depends upon its strength and forwardness, and the grower needs te exercise his best judgment in the work. Or course a strong, robust, early plant will mature mere leaves than one that is weak, sickly and late, aud te pass judg ment upon each soparate plant and top it accordingly, needs the exercise of geed judgment and experience. Frem eight te sixleen Icaves are usually left upon a stalk, depending, as abeve stated, upon its strength and forwardness. I have known growers te endeavor te mature as many as twenty leaves upon a plant, but never in Mich cases are the best results secured, for the leaves will net sufficiently mature te yield the best quality of tobacco.
