ATTENTION : Began Yesterday, June 1. 0.0 Scotch people and old-time folks all knew what is the meaning of " upset sale." It is a term used when things are te be sold out te close estates, partnerships or cor porations. We propose a sale of this nature. The prosperous season se far this year, the largest avc ever had, en courages us te Ring All the Bells ! and call the people in te close out, before the 4th of July, all of the OF Men's and Beys' Clothing. We Want te Sell Out te make purchases for fall. We Waat te Sell Out te keep plenty work going. We Want te Sell Out te make some changes. We Want te Sell Out te start again with a new stock. We Want te Sell Out te de a larger business than ever; Nothing steps us in executing right plans, and if the prices must be cut down te gather the people, Down go the Prices. The people have treated us generously for many years, and we arc satisfied, even though we de sacrifice our profits for a month. IN A NUT-SHELL, THIS IS IT. The practical point of all this is a radical reduction in prices from June 1. They are cut, some ten, some twenty, some thirty per cent., and some, en goods pre pared specially for this sale, net at all. Compared with April 1, the average deduction is twenty-five per cent. Frem the great list which might be made Ave only quote three items te-day, namely : 3,000 pairs of Men's Cassimere Pantaloons, made and making, strong, neat, durable, lately worth $3.50 new $2.42. 600 Men's Suits, real standard Sawyer's Cassimere, made and making, late price $15.00 new $12.50. 750 Men's Suits, eight styles, every garment freshly made, some of them sold freely at $12.00 new $9.25. These are only specimens of the reductions. Our great desire is te get the people te examine te the . goods and see the reality of the reductions. Thirty Iren Mills Closed la Pittsburgh Twenty Thousand Workmen Become Consumers Instead or Producers The Btrlkers Orderly, bnt Pre pared ler the Struggle. Pittsburgh Dispatch te the Times. Tlie creat strike of the iron workers was inaugurated yesterday. Twenty thousand men and boys who yesterday added te the wealth of the community by geed, honest work are te-day idle consumers. Yester day this vast army of producers earned fully $89,000. Te-day they squandered part of it. A strange stillness prevails throughout the, city. Clouds of impene trable smoke no longer hang ever the town. The strike brushed them away as it by majric, leaving a clear skv and Priea Twe Cents pre-eminently the judges te decide the question as te whether the meaning of this article is entirely innocent or whether it conveys the injurious reflection, as has been contended by the commonwealth. The defense also claim that the publication is net malicious or defamatory and was uui, negligently maae. The new censtitu tien provides that where the matter com plained of as a libel is a matter proper for publication and it is established that it was published without negligence and without malice a criminal prosecution uauuet ue maintained ler such publication. The publication being false it is for the defendant te show that it was published without negligence or malice. AH tbe thirty odd iron mills in the two cities are Kile with ene single ex ception, the Union iron works of Carnegie Brethers & Ce. Thousands of workmen. arrayed in their best clothes, were all day long parading the streets, talking, laugh ing and spending their money. The Strikers are quiet and orderly. They have the sympathy of the public and will com cem mifc no breach of the peace, unless goaded by desperation, te turn the tide of public sentiment agajnst them. Speculation as 10 tncuuai result 01 tiie strike continues. Beth sides "are sanguine of success and each expresses a detenuiuatieu te fight uuui it gams tue victory. The Strike Probably a Short, One. Very few persons think the strike will last long. The manufacturers cannot very well afford a prolonged period of idleness. It would briug disaster te their business and result iu driving trade te ether locali ties, as was the. case with nails a few years age. "Wheeling secured the bulk of the nail tiade while Pittsbuigh manufacturers were resisting a demand of their empleyes for a trilling advance. The strikers are a wuii-ergaiuzcu, compact body 01 men, thoroughly prepared for the struggle. Manufacturers, en the ether hand, al though sustained by the cehesive power of millions of capital, are far less cohesive than their opponents and thev. alreadv show signs of weakness. The Union Iren works of Pittsburgh, Union iron works of Cleveland, Ferest City iron works of the same place, and the Whitakcr iron works of Wheeling hive all signed the new scales granting the advance. The Norten iron works of Ashland, Ivy., and the Lawrence iron works of Jlonteii, Ohie, arc also run ning at .tue.rstrikers' prices, but they haven't slguedihe scales. The St cef Works Stlil Kuunlng. The steel works here are all running, several of tliem having signed the scales, but as they employ bnt few boilers their action is without moral effect upon the situation. The Chicago iron works am ruirhing'at last year's prices and with the permission of President Jarrelt and Secre tary Martin. The workmen there are net suie the new scales should be demanded and President Jarrctt will go there short ly te investigate'. The Cincinnati boilers are disposed te break the engagement they made seme mouths age with the em ployers, te continue work at the old rates till the troubles arc settled at Pittsburgh. The Amalgamated association has a clean record. President Jarrctt will meet with the Cincinnati ledges en Saturday night iu auew me ueijers incur mistake, urge them te kcep faith with the employers, and se the mills in Cincinnati district may be expected te resume next week. Closely following upon the heels of the strike of the iron-workers comes the movement of the railroads centering here te offset the reduction of their business by discharging large numbers of their em ployees. The Pennsylvania railroad com pany has turned 1,500 of their men adrift and the Panhandle company has notified several hundred of their people that their services arc no longer required. The total dismissal by. these two corporations te date number ever 1,700, with mere te fol fel low. The alleged cause for this wholesale decapitation is the falling off in freight and passenger traffic. able doubt that doubt is the property of the prisoner and should be given in his favor." The jury after a short deliberation fouud feuud a verdict of guilty. A motion w.-.s made for a new trial. Senater JlcPhersen, when the question was raised of admitting the defendant te bail pending the dispei" tien of the motion or send him te prison, said that he wished the " punishment te be adequate te the offense." Alter con sulting with his counsel, however, he let it be known that he did net, wish the dc- leudant sent te jail. Mr. Shapley theu withdrew the motion for a new trial. The judge in entering judgment said that he acquiesced in the wisdom of net sending the defendaut te prison. The case, he said, was ene that did net call for very severe punishment. Mr. Chambers, he said, Lad net made an uncalled-for publi cation, but had acted under the orders of of his principal. Mr. Chambers had been misled. In any matter, however, tlm judgesaid, touching the reputation of such m uiuui.u as i uiuieu eiates senator, the most thorough examination should be made before publishing it. He imposed a fine of ene thousand dollars en the defend ant. The money was immediately paid. SENATOR KOBEHTS INDICTED. UHAAlBKKg' CONVICTED. Attest: FitANK Git test, Clerk. nilS-twd lie l'ays a Flue or 81,000 for Sending the Alantrep Interview te the "Herald." Tillies. Senater McPliersen's criminal suit for libel against Julius Chambers, tbe Phila delphia correspondent of tbe New Yerk Jlerald, came .cm for trial yesterday before Judge Biddlc; Mr. Chambers was de fended by Jehn Tewushend, of New Yerk, whose work en libel and slander is re garded as an-authority, and by Rufus E. Shapley. The commonwealth was repre sented by Assistant District Attorney Warwick and James II. Hcveriu. The elegant and Munchausen-like James R. Mantrop, the publication of whose asser tions regarding Senater McPherseu's al leged connection with the Peruvian guano claims company was the cause of com plaint, was brought up from prison te be en hand if required te testify. Senater McPliersen testified that he had never get iu " en the ground fleer " iu the Peruvian cenpauy, as the interview in the Herald alleged, and had never been in any way connected with it. Mr Chambers testified that in April last he had received a letter from his home office enclosing a note from Mantren te Perrv RolmenL offering te make a disclosure of the de tails of the guano claims. Mr. Chambers, by the letter received, was directed te interview Mantrop. He did se, and sent the report te New Yerk, uet knowing whether it was te be minted or net. An offer te show that when Mr. Chambers sent the article his purpese and expecta tions was te have it used at the investiga tion in Washington was overruled. Mr. Shapley in his argument said that he had refused te take advantage of tech nicalities and allowed the case te come te trial te give Senater McPherson au oppor tunity te sail for Europe en Saturday, as the senator desired. lie contended that it was net sufficient for the jury te believe1 that injustice had been done te Senater McPherseu, but they must be satisfied that Mr. Chambers had been guilty ei the crime of wilfully and maliciously publish ing a false and defamatory libel. lie held also that the Peruvian company had never been proved a fraud, and that consequently the substance complained of was net li li beleous. He did net think that criminal courts existed te afford supersensitive sen sen aters opportunities for revenge. The judge in his charge te the jury said : "It is admitted that the article was pub lished in the New Yerk Herald and that it is false. Frem this admission, therefore, yen have a right tp infer that it was ma licious, because malice is net merely ill will against a person, but it is in law any wrongful act don&intontienally and with out cause or excuse. Any malicious pub licatien injurious te the reputation of another is a libel. But it is contended that the sense attributed te this article is net its natural and proper sense, but a perver sion of the true meaning of the publica tion. The language used in libelous arti e'es is te be taken in all its length and sig nification and the injury whjch is com plained of in these cases arose from the meaning which ordinary people put upon the words of the article, se that you are The Torpedo Statesman uliargeil With Cor rupt .Employment et Meney. Patrick C. Beyle, editor of the Oil EcJie, published at Richburg, New Yerk, who yesterday ruade an information against Sate Senater W. B. Roberts, of Crawford county, charging "him with having cor ruptly influenced vetcis in his interest iu the campaign of 1873 and with having committed perjury iu takintr his oath as senator, has made affidavit that Roberts paid divers large sums of money te Messrs. Shelden, Range, Wheeler and ethers for corrupt purposes. Reberts has employed as counsel Lyman D. Gilbert and M. E. Olmstesd, who demanded an early hear ing by the aldcrmau bcfoie whom the criminal infuimatieu was made. Their request was granted, the alderman designating the 18th iutaut for a hear ing. Beyle has been notified of the action taken and will be called en te substantiate his allegations at that time, unless he can give a satisfactory icasen why the hearing should be pobtpeued. The prosecution against Senater Roberts is due te two suits he has started against Beyle and sev eral ether identified with the publication of the Oil Eche. That paper contained a number of articles defamatory of the sena tor's character. One declared that the Rebeits fortune had been built upon a patent which many believe te have been stolen and that it has been sustained by bribery and perjury in the highest courts of the country. Anether states that Rob erts was an adept iu the art of corruption, of bribery, perjury and fraud, and that he has for years robbed the oil producers of Pennsylvania. The paper also dcclaicd that all opin ions favorable te the Roberts torpedo were bought ami paid for. The following is an extract innn one of the Eche edito rials : "There are individuals operating bore iu this field who, when they were in Butler, Venango, Clation and Armstrong counties, Pennsylvania, were repeatedly dmggcd te Pittsburgh te dance attend ance en a venal court and at last forced te contribute thousands of dollars of their honestly earned money te feed the monop oly which had fastened itself upon them by means of perjury and nnjust decisions bought and paid for out of the stealings " In conscqucnce of these aspersions of his character Senater Roberts proceeded against Beyle and his newspaper associates in the circuit court of the United States for the Northern district of New Yerk, iu a suit for damages amounting te $50,000. He also made information against the same parties in McKean county for libel aud true bills have been found against them. Roberts' friends claim that the suit agaiust him was projected for a double purpose te lessen his chances for attaining the nomination for Congress in the Ciaw ford district aud te induce him te abandon the preccediugs which lie lias instituted against the publishers of the Oil Eche. The senator has indie ited that no pressure can bobreucrht te bear en him causing a withdrawal of the suit for damages. Beyle stated that among the counsel engaged te leprescnt him in ti.e case against Roberts is General Benjamin P. Bntler, and that the number of his witnesses at the anticipated trial would reach 100.
