LANCASTER DAILX INTEIIIGENGER SATURDAY MAI 27, 1882. Lancaster intelligencer. SATURDAY EVESINO, MAY 27, 1882 The Cisterns or Old Carthage. The Land ertlic Bey, by T. W. Bcid. Stumbling ever the broken blocks of masonry, among which the lizards, sole inhabitants of the city, were running swiftly, I walked a short distance seaward past the site of Dide's palace, and came thus te the place where 'the only extensive remains of the greatness of Carthage are te be found. These are the cisterns which once furnished a portion of the water sup ply of the city. Just as Professer Owen can reconstruct an extinct animal if only :i single bone of its skeleton has been pre served, se it is an easy matter for these who have seen these wonderful cisterns te form an approximate idea of the grandeur of the city te which they belong ed. They are vast subterranean struc tines, with heavy vaulted reefs, intended te shut out from the cool water in the michty tanks the heat of the African sun. But time has made many a bicach in these great arcbes.-and the light of day in con sequence streams in upon corridors and chambers which 1,800 years age were jeal ously shrouded in midnight gloom. Seme of the cisterns are circular in shape and leek like nothing se much as enormous wells ; the majority, however, are of oblong-form. Iu every case the masonry is of the most substantial descrip tion, showing hew well the Plumii ciati.s did their work. Even mere re markable, however, than the quality of the masonry is that of the lining of ceiucnt upon the walls of the cisterns. It is as perfect te-day as en the day probably mere than '2,000 years distant when it was spread upon these walls. The vety marks of the trowels used in spiQ.uling it arc quite dibtiuct, and here and there may be seen the coarse imprint of some weikmau's thumb a hight te ponder ever at one's leisuie. 1 had a strange "ceiie' feeling upon me as I trod the long ceveied corri dor that runs the length of the whole scries of cisterns, and thought of the time when abeve where I new walked the tumultuous life of a great city had rolled in its majestic fulue.es of power. Most el tbe cisterns were hall tilled with lubbish that had fallen when the aichcs of the loef gave way but presently 1 e.une te some which seeni mI te be comparatively little injured, and at last te one that se far as I could tell was as pes (Vet as en the day when the Pluunicinti weikmen left it and the cool waters wi-jelirst allowed te flew iute it. It wat a beautiful, dimly-lighted chain ber, withvalls and reef and fleer white and clean, and it contained pure crystal water te the depth of live or six feet. Se bright and refreshing was the water, se delight ful the rentiast which this cool, shady apartment piesented te the binning heat and glare outside that 1 looked about te see if there were any means by which I eeukl descend and bathe in this vast tank. Nene, however, weie visible, and alter a while I had te leave the arched corridei and return te the blaze of the sunshine. A-v.'i:n Tins.
