LANCASTER DAILY INLLIGENCER THUBSDAY MAY 25, 1882. Lancaster hxttUiQtmtt. THURSDAY EVENING, MAY 25, 1882. TUB OLD LETTER Crouching ever tlic fire with van check and whitened hair, And sad sunk eyes, en the embers fixed with a dull unseeing staic ; Crouching ever the fire, the woman, wan and old, With the nickering flame en the letter tern trembles in her held. Outside the sleet beat3 last and thick en the uncurtained pane, The wind sob round the lonely house, as it Mwccps the snow-clad plain : iii-lile, the ghosts et joy, and hope, and tear. less et household mirth ' l'llt and whisper round the woman who sits beside the hearth. Yet the magic spell el the letter has sent her fancies back, Flying last past all the gravel that mark the past's long track. Flying past change ami sorrow, flying pa-t wieng and rath. Till the heart beats fast, ami tne pulsus thrill, te the passionate glowel youth. Ah, duller still hcrlile will show, harder the taskwerk seem, Fer that weak hour by fancy snatched ler memory's golden dream I l'ut by the letter, let it .share thy slewanj sure decay; I 'at lent and meek take up again the burden el theday.
