LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER FRIDAY MAY 19, 1882. Lancaster firtcllificnrxr. FRIDAY EVEKINO, MAY C XB82. TOBACCO URUWlSCi IN PESJSSYLVANIA 1 Tlie Season for Setting the Plants. " X. A. G." in Country Gentleman. Ill order te strengthen tobacco plants which have been raised under glass, se that they may bear transplanting te the field with little less from the change, the sashes s-heuld l-e lcmevcd from the cold frames a week or mere before they are large enough for setting. This will cause them te extend their rootlets, and accli mate them te out-deer conditions of weather. A little neglect at this time, as rciraids feicing and watering, will de geed rather than harm. I found, en convers ing with the farmers of Lancaster county, that strong, geed sized plants are consid ered indispensable for securing an even and successful planting ; and this accords exactly with my own experience. There is nothing gaiued in cttiug small, sickly plai s. It is much better te allow the plants te icmain in the seed bed until they arc of Mifiicicnt. size, with leaves as large as a table-spoon or silver dollar. The time prefened for planting is fiem May 1 te June 20. I have seen geed crops of tob.icce mature with plants set out after this time, but tl.eie is danger that the plants will net have time te fully mature with Liter .setting than this, and there is also (hmger, if the eiep should mature, that it may be frozen in the curing barn biifeie it is cured. It has formerly been thought advisable te set out tobacco plants in soil saturated by a heavy rainfall. Kxpciiencu has proved, however, that it is pi Citable te sat the plants in a dry or moist soil, which necessitates a gi cater amount of labor, but insures greater suc cess with the p'anting. The reasons for this aie obvious. In setting a plant with the ground wet fieiii heavy rains, the soil becomes compacted about the stems of the plant, and when it becomes dry nain, a liaid ciust t.r lump is formed, which is detrimental te healthy and rapid growth of the plants. ISy setting the plants in a dry or simply moist soil, and watering them afterwards1, this difliculty is obviat ed, and giewth commences mere quickly thau when set in wet .soil. Of course, if a shower immediately fellows after the plants aie set, no hand watering will be ncccssaiy. A second watering will be nece.s iry if the weather should be dry and fie sun bright. Theic is another important point in set ting out tobacco plai.ts which deserves te be eensideied. It is peer policy te get a gang of men ami boys into a tobacco field te set plants. I much prefer te take a lit tle moie tiiue for the weik, and knew that it is being well done. A plant poorly tat out stands :; peer chance te succeed, and I never yet knew a piece of tobacco te be planted by a crowd of hands but that the weik was slighted. 3Iy method of setting tob.iece is te picpaie the soil a short tunc befoie the plants arc leadyte tiatisplaur, and when they have attained .sufliciciit size, the weik of planting is commenced, with IitSle jegaid te theweathcr. I prefer te set a small picce. each day, performing the weik. if the weather is dry, during t'li'I.iltt! piiiiiei- el the day, which gives the plants an oppeilKuity tereeiuitduring the a ninny night. Care needs te be ex ex rieiseil in drawing the plants fiem the seed-bed. The bed should be thoroughly sprinkled before the work is commenced, in elder that the plants maybe easily pulled without mutilating the leaves, and that the soil will the better adhcie te the loots. The plants should bu kept straight in the hand as they aie drawn, ami placed in haudliiis in a shall' w vessel, with the loots in the bottom and tl: leaves at the top. In this shape they may 'nskept fresh :md in geed condition le: a number of days, provided they am I.-pi damp and in a shady, cool place. As seen as the plants cemmence te giew alter having been tiansplanted te the Held, the cultivator should be started between the rows. The grevcrs of the weed in the Lancaster section or Pennsyl vania have, learned the importance of con stant, cultivation in their tobacco patches. They de net wait for the weeds te show themselves, but cemmence the weik as seen as the tobacco plants have taken root. The implements used for cultivat ing tobacco are numerous, and consist of vai ions forms of onc-herso cultivators, all of which aie intended te stir and pulvcrize the soil between the rows of plants. Be tween the plants in the rows the soil must be loosened and mellowed hy hand-booing The tirst hoeing is usually tcitncd " scrap ing." The process consists of skimming off the surface of the soil with the weeds, and replacing with mellow soil from be tween the rows. If the soil is hard about the plants where the cultivator cannot reach, it should be loosened and mellowed by a hoe. A:.wi:i: Tins. !
