LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER WEDNESDAY MAY 17, 1882. TlJ K SUlFFLEIt BOYS A Lively Meeting, but net Much llnameis Dene. Afctated meeting of the Shiffler fiie company was held in their ball last even-itJT- The attendance was very large, aud the president, P.B. Fordney, occupied tbe chair. The cetniuitecc en baud reported that they had engaged the city cornet hand te play for the company en Decoration day. The report was accepted and approved. The investigating committee, appointed at a former meeting te investigate charges made against Peter B. Fordney and Fred erick Burr of the finance committee, rela tive te their action concerning the bend of the treasurer, reported that they had performed their duties, and found the charges against Fordney and Burr were sustained, and that Mr. Fordney had ti cited the investigating committee with contempt. Mr. Fordney declared the report te be out of order, and against the icmeu finances of many members, refused te allow any action te bu taken en it. J.G.Goedman appealed from the deci sion of the chair, but the chairman re fused te entertain the appeal, or allow the .scciitary te take a vote upon it. Amid great confusion he insisted en calling the icgular order of business, and having gene through the routine without any business being done, said a motion te adjourn was in order. A motie.i te adjourn was made, aud although there was a very loud and demonstrative negative vote, the motion was declaicd can led. RAILItUAD TKESJrvi.SSEKS. is tbe County Liable for their Maintenance ? Alderman McConemy had before him this morning one customer, arrested for trespassing en the Pennsylvania railroad by mounting a freight car te steal a ride. The accused was committed te the county jail for ten days. And right here it may net be amiss te htatc that much complaint is being made by citizens that tramps thus arrested have te be provided for at the expense of the county. Pitaen Keeper Burkfaeldcr informs us that theie is, en au average, tweuty-five prisoners in jail all the time whose only offence is that they have been arrested aud com mitted for train jumping. All of these men have te bcsuppeitcd by the Lancas ter comity tax-payeis although very lew of them are residents of the county. The courts have already dceided that alder! men, indices of the pcace and pelha eifiei'js are net entitled te any cempensa tien from tin: ceuut' ler making buch at rests. It new remains te be seen whether the county is liable for their maintenance after they have been arrested aud ledged in jail by railroad officers. The question is of some importance as their costs te the county is new net much Us than $3,000 per j ear. Seme Street Werk. WEDNESDAY EVENING, MAY, 17, 1882, SfflPHERD ONCE MORE. DEFYING THE 1IOCSE COMMITTEE. The Peruvian Contractor Positively Declines te Produce Papers and Is Discharged Frent the Stand. Washington, D. C, May 17. The Heuso committee en foreign affairs met in secret session this morning te resume tbe discussion which up te the hour of their adjournment yesterday afternoon had failed te brine about any agreement re- before eleven o'clock with a hand bag saiu te contain numerous documents and a prepared statement covering 50 pages or mere. Twenty or thirty representatives of the press, including an artist for one of the JN ew 1 erk illustrated papers, waited impatiently in the cerridcr for the opening of the doers. At 11:15 the committee were still in conference and the belief that irre concilable difference exists is gaining grounds. At twenty five minutes past eleven the doers were opened and the witness Ship herd having taken his seat the chairman addressed him as fellows : "The commit tee en foreign affairs is directed by the Heuso te demand from you copies of all correspondence between, yeurtelf and any person or persons whomever and all papers and ether evidence in your possession tending te show what you did or attempted te de te enforce the claim of the Peruvian company or induce the United States te cuforce this claim against Peru. Are you new prepared te furnish the documents here called for V" Shipherd " I am net." The chairman repeated the question, and Shipherd again replied that he would net furnish the papers; The chairman then asked : " De you positively decline te pioiluce the pjpsrs and evidence called for?" Mr. Shipherd "I de." The chairman" What is the further pleasure of the committee?" Mr. Rice "I metre that we go into ex ecutive session." The motion was agreed te, the room was cleared and the committee went into ptivate consult atieu. After about ten minutes the doers were reopened and it was learned that the com mittcc has agreed te inform the sergeant at arms that it had no further need for the attendance of Mr. Shiphcid and that he might be dischargcil until further notice. Ne time was fixed for any future meeting of the comtnittee in regard te the Chili Peruvian matter. The committee will held another secret session te morrow merniag. .' ' There is much speculation as te the future action of the committee in regard te Mr. Shipherd. It was believed that the committee before putting te Mr. Ship- herd the alternative questions this morn ing, had decided in the event of his posi tive refusal te preduce the required corre spondence te report him te the Heuse as in contempt of its mandates. Thf ir sub sequent instruction te the sergeaut-at-arms texlissharge him has given rise te a belief in some quarters that the recent su pi erne court decision in tbe Ilallet-Kilbeuru case has led the. committee te doubt the ex pediency of proceeding te extreme meas ures. It is learned that the commitlee have decided te summon ex-Assistant Secretary of State Robt. R. Hitt as a witness. III.AZH ON THE K1VKK. A Steamer en Fire nt tbe Helaware Break water.
