The regular monthly meeting of council was bold in tlie council chamber, Friday evening, May 12. Present : Messrs. Fil bert, Guiles, Hardman, Kistler and Her shey, the latter being president pre tern. The minute of the meetings of April 14tb, 17th and 18th, read and approved. Mr. Guiles, of the paring committee, ic ic perted that notice had been sent te owners of property te have their pavements re paired. Council ordered the chief burgess te appoint aud swear in as policemen, Messrs. II. Kedenheiscr and 3Ir. Dysingcr each te icccive a salary of $5 per month. The committee appointed te revise ordi nances icpertcd progress. By an ordinance of council Maple street is te be opened and paved, between Second and Third streets, and the Marietta and Columbia turnpike, running from Second te Third street, be tween Maple and Linden streets, will be closed. Mr. J. Auwater tendered his re signation as auditor, which was accepted by council. The following bills were ordered te be paid : Borough treasuicr, $195.01 : C. Strawbridge, $43.10 ; II. F. Bruner, $24.99; 8. A. Beckius, $10.72 ; treasurer Columbia fire company, $112.50 ; treasurer Vigilant fire company, $11250 ; treasuicr Shawnee fire company, $$2.50 ; S. A. Beckius, col lector, $111.40 ; total, $728.78. The ead committce icpertcd that Chest nut street had been located from Sixth street te the Chestnut Hill turnpike, and that the grade bad been staked off. Several parties have offered te furnish materials for constructing the extension of the street. The wei k has net yet been com menced, but operations will begin as seen as the weather permits. Samuel Werlz, of Scheck's Mills, was working his tobacco patch, between the canal and railroad, about ten days since, aud at neon he left his work te go te din ncr. After being in jail for eG hours he was re leased en a habeas corpus. Such is Mr. Wcrtz's story, but Officer Pyle, who made the arrest, puts quite a different face upon it. He states that Wcrtz is a piofcssienal train-jumper ; that he had been repeatedly warned that he would be arrested aud boasted that he was tee sharp te be caught. Instead of at tempting te cress the railroad oppesito the water-station, as stated abeve, he get en the train at the place where he works, for another man, nearly a mile up the read, and the officer arrested him while he was making a trip from his work te his home. " One story is geed until another is told." Railroad Metes. Yesterday about half past one o'clock a wreck occurred ou the Peunsylvauia rail road. A freight train was passing east en the fast Union line, drawn by engine 4G3 ; at Watts station the train parted and the tirst section ran te Big Chiques rock where it stepped. The second section came up and ran into the first. One car was com pletely demolished and three ethers weie ei eken and thrown from the track. Trains were delayed for about two hours. A freight wreck eccui red atMiddletewu te-day by which two freight cars were thrown from the track and brekeu and the Johnstown express east was delayed for some time. The brakemen and conductors of the Pennsylvania railroad made their Grst ap pearance in white caps this afternoon. Among the neighbors and friends ef-the victim there is a story current of a young woman of this city who is terribly excr. ciscd ever the supposed habitation iu her stomach of a live snake, which is suspect ed of having been taken in while the woman was drinking.
