LANCASTER DAILY INTEIUGENGEIl FRIDAY' MAY 5, 1882. il ILanrastri i-aJrlUgrnrcr. FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 5. 1882. TUB WAIF ON THE WAVK. Head at Service of Mercy, at Hyde Park, Ma., Feb. 12, 1S32. An incident in the writer's experience. Leng leagues lrem shore a stranger came. And lighted en the ship's white sail. And lighting, moaned a plaliitive wall, While, heart-beats shook his tired frame. It was a land bird out te sea, Beguiled by witching winds aud fair, Or forced by lurieus storm te share" A bitter bondage, theush se free. Uengli ailern te Ids rescue ran : The deck was lull or eager eyes, And lips sp ike terth in pitying crlei Stiiii pioei ei the divine in man. At last hi- Hew into my hand ; I bore it te icy own warm breast, And gave it loed and drink and rest This wait lrem off the n caring land. And as we reached the welcome .shore, 1 gave the sweet bild te the biecze. Who flew and sung among the t rocs. As blithe as il hail done belere. Ami tiuii 1 thought with many a soul Lured by tlie pleasures ei the world, Or by temptations rudely hurled I.esl.atid alone deep sorrows roll. Hut Ced's geed ship et leve may find. And bring the tired spirit home. Ne mere In ways ei sin te ream Anil lively give a better mind. A. Judsen Jilch. S'IMi: XOTKK 1TOR AUKICUL.TU1MMTS' ItaiMug tlio.Siinllewor for Its Seed, (jcruianteu n Telegiaph. Fer a year or two tbc subject of feeding the set-il of Rtinllevrcrs te fowls lias been referred te in poultry journals frequently with approval, and wc have seen no word in opposition. Although this flower, if it can he se called, has come into favor even among ladies and some pantaloon cioa ciea tttrcs who aic Miid'te be of the male gen dir, it is by no means an attractive Heral attiiluitc. It is .something among flowers that the elephant is among beasts, huge and uncouth. Still, if it possesses the merit of pieducing wholesome feed for the fcatheied tribe, it is te that extent se much beyond Mowers in solid value. Iiut it being proved that it is a plant of mere or less value -for its seed, and being very h.iuly in its nature, it substitutes usefulness for beauty ; and as it will grew in every out of-the-way corner aud place, where .sc.iicely anything else- can be culti vated, it cm be honestly recommended te the keeper of fowls te appropriate such plots of gieund le the raising of it for iti seed. It would net require much space te produce from three te live bushels of seed, which would be a substantial addition te the wini t season's supply of chicken feed. Raising Violets. There is no moie nennlnr (lnwpr Mmn the violet, and as it is oue that can be en joyed by all with very little labor, while the expense is net te be thought of, we are eiii'ii surprised of its absouce in many households. It is ene of the earliest te bln.nu ; in fact, it can be enjoyed almost throughout the entire year ; aud is se hardy that it requires very little protec tion. At. most a cold frame, covered in winter wilh straw matting, which a bundle of straw will supply, will be sufficient te give us flowers in the latter pait of March, when the plants, which have been increasing, should lie p.utly louieved and set iu the open ground. A. portion of these may be let remain out all winter, well covered with maniiie, te be uncovered early in March. It is also one of the prettiest and most welcome house (lowers, being planted iu a .suitable wooden box and placed in a cool part of a room, and aired occasionally by being set iu the sun at a window iu the room, iu which there is no lire, and allow the sash te be raised for an hour .it mid day when the weather is net tee seveie. TIii-ie was vciy little intermission the past fall, wilder and this spiiiig se far, in which wc could net gather a little hunch ol'vieleis; and wc should consider it a leal deprivation te bj without them. The Cult tire or vfkra. There is probably net ene in ten gardens where efcr.i is te be found, and we feel like calling attention again te it. The seed is te be had at all our seed stores, and fre quently at country stores where the pro prietor keeps en hand a supply of gaiden seels. We have raised a crop regularly for ever twenty years, ami it would be hard for us te abandon it. The seed should be drilled m lows about three feet apait, and when the plants get a few inches high they should be thinned out, leaving the sit i ingest growers stand, te about ten or twelve inches apart in the row. Keep the weeds and grass down, the same as ler corn, and that is all there is about it. The stalks begin te tinew out pods when they aie eighteen or twenty inches high, and the; e ate the things wanted. When the pod-, have just escaped from the blossom, or when they an: an inch or se long, they can be plucked anil used. There is noth ing te compare te tliem for soups, or they can be stewed and used as a side-dish. When there arc mere than for present use, they can be strung up and hung avfay in some dry, cold place for winter, and can be used then for soups as well as iu summer, the difiei ence being scarcely distinguished. This is ery little trouble, and they are ahv.us at hand. Of course they must be plucked, whether for immediate use or for winter, when the buds arc from ene te two inches long aud the outer skin can be easly cut. with t lie liuger-nail. I'.tiy the seed of the tall okra, and by re planting it a year or two it will become dwaif enough, though the short stalks produce about as many edible pods as the taller ones.
